We arranged to take our 11yr old grandson who was visiting from Kent to see the drifter but on arrival found them closed for maintenance. On speaking to a gentleman on board he very kindly allowed us on and escorted us around. It was incredible and brought back memories of the fishing industry from when I was a child ( 70yrs ago ! ). Plenty information and photos below deck and a short film. My husband was especially interested in the engine room. Grandson was taking it all in and thoroughly enjoyed it. A donation is all they ask ( very rare these days ) to keep this drifter afloat. Many thanks .

This was an unexpected bonus on our museum trip to Gt Yarmouth. As a local, I'd seen it many times but never had the time to pop in. This was recommended by the friendly host at Elizabethan House just across the road.
Free entry but we were happy to give a donation as this was such a great surprise. Their interpretation below deck was great. Even on a hot hot hot summer's Sunday, we were the only people on deck.
Thanks to Ruth for her informative intro, the staff were really knowledgeable and welcoming.
Definitely recommend a visit and would love to see it under steam.

Loved it! To my mind it’s one of the few things of interest on the River Yare at Great Yarmouth but it’s punches above its weight. I met some lovely volunteers on board keen to tell you it’s fascinating part in the herring fishing industry based here; sadly that industry has now wound up but in its day Yarmouth was one of the busiest ports of its kind. This lovely old vessel is the last remaining steam operated trawler in the country and the trust that maintains and operate it should be applauded and supported in their efforts! Visit if you are in this part of the world,

Great experience for a small donation. Really informative and friendly volunteers who can answer all the questions put to them.
Last remaing steam drifter that can still put to sea with working boilers.

Such an interesting boat. Really helpful guide. We learnt so much about the history of the boat. Feel it should be advertised much more locally

This boat is a wonderful piece of social history, which is well worth a visit. The volunteer who showed us around was funny, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about the Lydia and her story.

We had visited the Elizabethan House Museum and saw this wonderful boat just across the road so thought we’d pay a quick visit. It is free to look around, but please leave a donation as it will help keep this boat in the lovely condition that it already is.
We had a really interesting and informative tour of the boat by one of the volunteers on board, and he really brought the boat to life for us. There is a great ‘museum’ below deck, where the herring would have been held until the boat reached dry land.
We found out that the boat goes out to sea for the day a couple of times a year, so we will be back to spend a day on the Lydia Eva steam Drifter. A big thank you to the volunteers you did a great job.

A free but intriguing sight that won't take much of your time: The Lydia Eva, a 1930 steam drifter (a drifter is a smaller version of a trawler), and the last of its kind - that is towed in the Yare in Great Yarmouth, and that you can visit free of charge. Competent and welcoming volunteers will tell you the story of the ship and its kind and show you around the boat, incl. the below deck areas. Alas, an injury prevented me from climbing down into the body of the ship, so I limited myself to listening to part of the story and walking around on deck. Still, a marvelous minor sight in town. And you will find the recommended Elizabethan House Museum on just the opposite side of the quay.
