A great piece of living history
sep. 2019
We came upon this wonderful only surfing steam herring drifter in Europe by chance this afternoon walking along South Quay. Noticed that it had closed to visitors for the day but a very kind volunteer popped up and invited us aboard for an hour tour. This boat has an amazing story to tell from being built in 1930 until today. It has been beautifully restored and is full of lots to see and understand the history of the herring industry in the East of England.

What an interesting hour spent on board discovering how this worked and what it did. Very enthusiastic volunteers on board to explain everything and point out things of interest. Thoroughly recommend.

First of all it’s free. Second is the amazing knowledge of the staff there. You get to go all through the boat and there’s lots to learn

Wonderful vessel from a bygone era
aug. 2019
Found this attraction by accident. We were down the quay and noticed an old drifter alongside , asked a man who was talking to someone onboard what it was doing there? That's where our adventure began .The man was John , by chance an x volunteer for the fishing boat, he offered to take us aboard, which we gratefully excepted. .Entrance and guided tour are free but a donation is very much appreciated to help maintain this venture .
He told us the story of the Lydia Eva YH89 which is the last surviving Steam Drifter in the Uk. Over 1,000 of these fishing vessels were working out of Gt Yarmouth and Lowestoft in the 1920's.Lydia Eva is not , unfortunately, one of those typical drifters, which had narrower bows, and taller and narrower funnels( known as Woodbine funnels after the famous cigarette). This is because she was built a trawl as well as drift so she could earn money for a longer part of the year .
John told us what the fishermen endured when catching the "silver darlings " Plus the workings of the boat . Sean another volunteer talked about the steam ngine and coal needed to make the whole thing come to life .

Thanks to all for making our experience so enjoyable .Hope that more people make the effort by getting down to Hall Quay to support this venture that hopefully will educate future generations, and people like me a retired Royal and merchant navy man , who by the looks of it had an easier life than those fisherman . .

Admission is free with a guided tour thrown in , but a donation is welcome to assist in the upkeep.

How very interesting

What a gem... sat on Hall quay in Great Yarmouth you could easily miss this. we didnt and im glad we didnt... Very informative guided tour around this old Herring Drifter amazing insight into how the crew had to live and work and what space they had to do it in. I believe Faye? (apologies if i have your name wrong) showed us around and was happy to answer all questions posed with great knowledge. we got to see the hull, engine room, living quarters and galley and then we climbed up to the bridge.
It is not the easiest for accessibility however if you can walk then you should be ok... This is all free however they do have a donation pot at the end which i was happy to add to.

Fascinating historical vessel

Visiting this vessel makes you appreciate the travails our fisherman to bring us our fish. The crew quarters are (in estate agents parlance) cosy! Health and safety? What is that.

We came across Lydia Eva purely by chance, very pleased we did it is a living piece of History, looked after by some enthusiastic knowledgeable chaps, who took their time to show us around.
Unusually for these days admission is free, they do on specific days go to see with up to 8 passengers. You get to help out if you wish from stoking the boilers to a spell on the bridge.
If you are in Great Yarmouth I think it is a must

Drifter and trawler.

There were three volunteers on this ship when we visited. They were all very knowledgeable about the history of the vessel. It was really interesting being shown around and also hearing about the life of the ship and its crew. There are various info boards around the ship and there is a booklet that you can buy from them that contains mostly that same info to take away. The trust that runs the boat also has a ship in Lowestoft and they switch ports now and again.
