Good place to relax and let the wildlife calm oneself . Excellent cafe very reasonable and the perfect Cheese scones. Lovely on a dry day but good to view our feathered friends from inside the cafe with a hot drink on a wet or cod day

We attended a short guided walk and saw an amazing array of birds, including bearded tits, hobbies, kestrels and a bittern - none of these are exactly common. Highly recommended!

A great quiet spot to walk and view birds - there were plenty of waders and a variety of ducks to see.

January probably isn't the optimum month to visit, especially as it was drizzling the day we went. Very tall vegetation meant the views from the paths/viewing platforms were not great. However there were lots of birds singing even if we couldn't see them. It was relatively peaceful despite being close to a very busy road. Would definitely visit again in better weather.

Hi tazzat7,
Thank you for your comment. If I might explain a little as to why the reeds were so high when you visited. Radipole Lake is gradually filling up. This is because soil from farmland upstream is being washed off the fields into the River Wey and deposited in the lake. As the lake becomes shallower, the amount of reed is increasing. Reed is the key feature of the reserve; it provides a home for Radipole's iconic bearded tits and marsh harriers as well as a whole host of insects some of which are reedbed specialists. We have cut back some of the reed to improve the views across the lake.
We also have a Discovery Centre by the entrance to the reserve, which is open Fridays and Saturdays and is manned by staff who will be able to show you what wildlife sightings have been seen recently and to suggest which areas of the reserve might be best to view them. There is also a wall-to-floor viewing window inside the Discovery Centre, which has marvellous views right across the lake.
Please get in touch if you would like any further information, we are always happy to help. You can contact us on weymouth.reserves@rspb.org.uk.
Kind regards,
Laura

We were in the area for a week and saw this had reviews of 4.5/5. We like wildlife and nature so we decided to have a look.
There is honestly nothing at all to see as the paths were surrounded by very tall reeds with no way of seeing anything past them. You could also hear the roar of busy surrounding roads.
If there had been a t-Rex behind all the bushes and reeds, we still wouldn’t have seen it!
Do not waste your time and parking money on this grim and awful place!

Hi klwpvfc,
I'm very sorry you didn't have a good visit to the Weymouth Wetlands reserves. If I might explain a little as to why the reeds were so very high when you visited. We know some visitors like to see open water. We can only cut reed between October and February in order to protect breeding birds and in many places the soft mud makes it impossible to get access to cut reed at any time of year. Since we are now within the allowed reed-cutting period, we have cut some accessible areas and are continuing our programme of dredging ditches and reed fringes. This has opened the reserve up a lot more and visibility right across the lake is much improved. We have also widened all paths to improve accessibility. We are also lobbying Natural England, Environment Agency and Dorset Council to work with us to find a long-term solution to save Radipole Lake from filling in and drying out.
Please get in touch if you would like any further information, we are always happy to help. You can contact us on weymouth.reserves@rspb.org.uk.
Kind regards,
Laura

The site used to be a great place to see birds. Over the last few years it has deteriorated in my view, as the vegetation around the paths has increased. For example the "bandstand" was a great viewing spot, giving views of the lake. It is now nearly impossible to glimpse the water at all.
All of the paths are enveloped with tall vegetation. Such a terrible shame.

Lots of walkways through the reserve with places to observe the wildlife. Sculpture area in the middle if you can find it. Saw Little White Egrets, a Crane, a Cormorant along with the usual birds. Stop at the hut by the entrance for a tub of lovely ice-cream.

Had a superb long walk(for us) on the paths in the reed beds. Were lucky enough to see the Harrier Hawks and the bird life just brilliant. Fantastic volunteer staff to point you in the right direction. Strongly recommended.

Is it suitable for mobility scooter and can we walk our dog ?
Paul C
Melbourne, UK136 bidrag
Not really suitable for mobility scooters as some of the surfaces are uneven due to the nature of the location.
Dogs are not recommended in any nature reserve as birds are sensitive to noise and many nest close to the walkways. Best to leave your dog at home.
