Walked from Blackhall rocks to Crimdon and back on a very cool and windy August day. We were truly surprised by the beauty of the coastline, fascinating arches and caves and we even found some pink anemones in a rock pool. The car park was free and it looks like the area has undergone a huge transformation in recent years. The only reason for losing a star is the dog poo. Seriously it was horrendous, walking along the cliff path we couldn’t look at the view as we were constantly shouting to our kids to watch their feet! Some dog owners are just disgusting: I know some people might say it’s better to leave animal waste to nature but there are signs up explaining that this kills the wild flowers. Pick up after your dog!

I had a wonderful walk on Blackhall Beach this afternoon .
A huge, clean beach. Hardly anyone about .
Easy free parking, nice paths down onto the beach . No litter .
Signs of the coal heritage of the beach .
Very good for dramatic photo opportunities.
Great for Labrador’s

This is a beautiful part of our coastline. Wild, windy and exhillarating. The coast road runs a little inland so it is necessary to park in one of the several car parks and walk down on to the beack. This can be steep but is well worth the effort.

Went for a drive and a walk between Seaham and Sunderland. It was during the recent storms of Eunice and Franklyn so you could imagine how wild it was - a bracing but invigorating walk. The coastline is gorgeous and has improved a lot since I was last here 30 years ago - probably since the demise of the coal mining industry. I will return in the summer when the coastline will be used more and perhaps earn that fifth star!

A lovely visit here taking in two of the beaches. Blast beach to the south of Seaham harbour and Seaham north beach or Seaham Hall beach to the north.
Both interesting and stunning in their own right. Good seaglass hunting on Seaham and Seaham north beach. I only found two blue bits on Blast beach.
Of course the kids were daft and got soaked in the sea despite it only being a few degrees above 0. Fortunately full spare sets in the car boot.

Motored up the coastline from Crimdon Dene to Seaham visiting various beaches that used to be unusable due to all the coal waste deposited in the area.
Over the last 20+ years since the last mine closed the sea with some help from conservationists has show how marvellous nature is.
Most of the areas are clean (shingly in places) and suitable for bathing when the weather permits. Loads of walking opportunities and lots of holiday mobile home lets available. Especially suitable for staycations.
Unfortunately very few if any public toilets and lots of the cafes have closed down to be replaced by mobile catering vans.
Great to see the transformation.

Impressive castle set on the Northumberland coast line, with miles of golden sand beaches below and views out to Lindisfarne & the Farne Islands.

Lovely walk on cliff tops at Blackhall rocks followed by coffee outside a nice hotel on the way back driving towards Castle Eden. Plenty car parking and most dogs seemed to be on leads. Path is quite smooth could walk a long distance or in a loop and back to the car if short of time. Steps down to the beach as well although quite a few but beach is quiet so loads of room.

We consider ourselves extremely lucky to live near such a lovely coastline and Indeed being able to walk here during lockdown kept us sane.
We are particular fans of the coast around seaham - Whether you visit noses’s point, vane tempest or seaham hall the scenery is stunning!
We also love to look for sea glass too
Have travelled the world and would struggle to name a more beautiful coastline
Unlike other coastal areas parking is free too and the beaches are rarely crowded.

Hi,
I'll be spending a month in Durham in June and would like to explore a little of the surrounding areas.
Is it possible to get to the coast and do these lovely coastal walks using public transport?
Thanks!
