We visited this church as part of a guided trip with Great Rail Journeys. The warden came and gave us a very interesting explanation of the building’s special features. It is an attractive church in any case, but the additional interest of its use during the Tynwald Day events was fascinating to learn about.

My wife and myself are visiting the Isle of Man as part of a 38-strong Great Rail Journeys Tour Group and earlier today we visited the Chapel of St John en route from Douglas to Peel.

Whilst it was good to have the opportunity to visit such an impressive Church, the surrounding area was also well worth seeing - particularly, as this is where Parliament stages an open air sitting once a year.

As such, I would encourage any other passerby’s to stop and 20-30 minutes enjoying everything the Chapel of St John and the surrounding area has to offer.

We visited this church on our way back from Peel to Douglas. On first site you would think it is just a church but it has a lot of historical importance, Once a year (on 5th July), since the 10th century, the Manx Parliament (Tynwald) sits in the Church - the MP's have their own, named seats. It is a day of great ceremony and pageantry. On the front of the balcony you can see the Tynwald Coat of Arms. Outside the Church is Tynwald Hill which you can climb to the top of. An interesting 30-40 minures.

In some ways there is nothing special about the appearance of the church. It’s significance lies in its function as the Royal Chapel of Tynwald Hill.

Tynwald is the oldest parliament in the world and has met on Tynwald Hill, in the centre of the island, every 5th July since the C10th.

This was traditionally the pagan feast of Midsummer and an early keill (chapel) was built here when Christianity arrived in the C6th. No-one knows when the first chapel was built and the first records are from 1557. The chapel has been rebuilt three times since then and the present building dates from the mid C19th and is a typical Victorian C13th Gothic style building. It still plays an important part in the Tynwald ceremony each year and the day’s proceedings are signed in the church,

The church is open daily and is worth visiting. The chairs for the Bishop and Lieutenant General are in the chancel along with the stalls for Members of the Legislative Council. Members of the House of Keys sit in the crossing. Don’t miss the Tynwald coat of arms on the front of the balcony and the C19th cross in the porch.

Plan to visit on a bright sunny day as the interior of the church is quite dark.

We visited as it was getting it's annual face lift before National Day so parts were screened off, but this didn't detract from the history and importance of the property. Interesting to see the seats used by the members of the Tynwald on National Day and then to go outside and walk the avenue they walk on the day. There are some information boards explaining about the IoM parliament and history.

It's actually more interesting than Tynwald Hill itself.

The church is a striking centrepiece of Tynwald National Park where each year the Manx Government (Tynwald) carry out their annual Midsummer Court.(convening here rather than in Douglas).
Part of the ceremony is held on the green (Tynwald Hill) and part withing the magnificent church.

Really loved our visit to the Royal Chruch - Anglican on an island where Methodists are numerous. The church and adjacent Tynwalad make a must see for any visitor with a love of history and scenery.
I would return to spend more time in the area to take in the national park and enjoy the nearby cafe and pub.

The main significance of St Johns is the association with adjacent Tynwald Hill and all the history that is associated with it.

I visited on Manx National Day, Wednesday 5th. July. A short service took place for dignitaries and invited guests only, which was relayed onto a big screen. Afterwards the church was open to everyone and is well worth a visit for the beautiful interior.

I visited the church in June 2017. The organ was completely covered in plastic sheeting, and I could find no information available about this - which would have been of interest to me.
