Fabulous Nature Reserve
jun. 2021 • Venner
What a fantastic nature reserve.
For £2 car parking we spent 5 hours looking at birds from the 4 hides and along the riverbank. Very varied landscape from wet woodland to riverbank: a large lake, reed beds and feeders in the woodlands at the end. The hides are well placed and give great opportunities to sit and observe the birds. Being mid June there were plenty of bird families: herons, swans, cormorants, grebe, tufted ducks, blue tits. Nesting pairs of lapwing, oyster catcher, black headed gulls. And then single birds: Reed bunting, reed warbler, blackcap, treecreeper, dipper, sand pipers, sedge warbler, gold finches, and greater spotted woodpecker.
Although it was Sunday and there were plenty of dog walkers, it was lovely to see so many families enjoying the space and the wildlife.
There are a couple of picnic tables in the butterfly garden if you bring your own picnic: and benches dotted about on the way round.
Saw fabulous wild flowers- lots of orchids, campion, honesty plus some rarer flowers I've still to identify from photos.
Don't forget your binoculars!

Went for a walk last Sunday to get some fresh air into our lungs and a bit of exercise and chose Low Barns as I had never been before. The weather was not great so we didn’t want a huge long walk so this suited us well. Plenty parking and a nicely stocked cafe - albeit takeaway due to COVID but that suited us fine. An enjoyable walk around the nature reserve with friends and no traffic noise or throngs of people hurrying around. Great way to spend a couple of hours outdoors

Recovery takes time
aug. 2020 • Par
It never ceases to amaze me: How Nature survives in the Wild;
When you look at little Chicks with Mum: All, so Meek and Mild!

Rain, Storm, Wind and Cold with only Shrubs and Trees to Protect;
Whilst we require Coats and Hats and Boots as a minimum to be: Bedecked!

This 'Low Barnes' Wildlife Park is 'Free' to wander round at Will;
We donate £4 per month as do others, helping to pay a Maintenance Bill.

The Area was Well Hacked Down, several years ago;
It has taken all this time to recover, with Wildlife Return; Quite Slow.

There is plenty of Seating for those with a need , plus Several, Staunch, Helpers who Volunteer;
If you want a snack, with an Hour or So to Fill, this is the place to Saunter: Right Here!!

Fantastic place - over 20 different birds within an hour
sep. 2019
The weather was pretty wet - but sitting in a hide, watching about 20 species of different birds flying in and out - around the feeders within the first hide was exceptional.
The reserve is well maintained. The paths are good and clean. The toilets are clean too and if you need a hot drink or soup, the cafe there have plenty.
We just brought our own hot drinks with biscuits...enjoyed watching the antics of all the birds - esp the nuthatch fighting over food. The mallards were funny too - they just stood around looking up at the feeders - hoping the little birds will throw some down for them. The jay made an appearance - so did the Greater Spotted Woodpecker and a Treecreeper! Coal tits, great tits, blue tits, gold finches, chaffinches, robins, pheasants, wrens, dunnocks...and in the other hide, there are waders such as little egret, little grebes, geese aplenty and the more usual ones.
However, if you only have a limited time, just stick to the first hide.

Far better the way it used to be
aug. 2019
My wife and I have been coming here fairly frequently for over ten years, but our latest visit, on 19 August 2019, was our first since recent modifications to the visitor centre. Driving in, I was immediately taken aback to find that newly erected fencing – including two gates, one of which appears to be (semi-)permanently locked – now makes the reserve slightly less accessible than it used to be.

Like many visitors to this place, I am a keen amateur photographer, and while I share the majority interest in birding, I am more keen on taking close-up shots of flowers and butterflies. Time was when, especially at the height of summer, the butterfly garden here would have been a riot of colour but, disappointingly, I have found it to be in a comparatively sorry state on my last half-dozen or so visits. Curious to find out whether or not the recent 'improvements' had extended to the butterfly garden, I decided to take a look before entering the visitor centre to pay the £2.50 parking 'donation', and was disappointed to find it just as bedraggled-looking as before, with nary a flower to be seen... and no butterflies!

On every one of our trips here, my wife and I have brought along a picnic lunch, which we have been free to enjoy at any of the picnic tables provided. That said, on our last visit, we had been unceremoniously ejected from the enclosed area behind the visitor centre (which we were the only ones using) to make way for a school party! Ordinarily, we would have refused, but as the alternative was to have our peace and quiet ruined by a horde of noisy kids, we complied. On this latest occasion, I couldn't help but notice that ALL of the picnic tables are now located in an extended enclosure behind the new fence; the few tables that used to be in front of the visitor centre or facing the car park have vanished.

By now beginning to doubt whether it would be worth staying, I headed back to the car to consult with my other half, who decided to have a look for herself. She returned having formed the impression that we basically weren't welcome, so I saved myself £2.50 and we headed off for an enjoyable afternoon at Tunstall Reservoir instead. It transpired that, while my wife had been checking out the extended seating area, a member of staff, emerging from the visitor centre to 'light up', had informed her – without being asked (or even being spoken to), and in no uncertain manner – that only food and drink bought on the premises can now be consumed at the tables! So if you bring your own picnic, you'd better bring your own tables and chairs, too, or be prepared to have it in the car! Will this also apply to the aforementioned school parties who invariably bring packed lunches, I wonder?!

Just why does it seem so commonplace these days that spending a few quid on sprucing a place up (which, in this instance, has actually made things worse, IMHO) makes the staff feel entitled to take such a high-handed attitude towards their loyal, frequent visitors?

'Low' Barns: Aptly Named..Perhaps!
aug. 2019 • Par
There's a Story to this posting that makes me feel quite Sad;
Of course: It's a place for Birds, thus you may think me, rather Mad!
This is 'Low Barns', we donate Monthly like so many;
But now it Shuts at 4pm, even though it's still light, if not Sunny!
Well fenced now with many a Chain Locked Gate;
Fortunately the 'Photographic Club' meets Monday's 'til Late!
One might think it's Back to Normal since the Management cut it down;
But the Truth is, 'Wildlife' is STILL thin on the Ground and that just makes us Frown!!
We need to protect that Wildlife, perhaps We Will ALL Discern;
So I'm still Smiling as I view the Scenes, for Nature Will Eventually Return!

Great place to chill out and relax

From start to finish you are surrounded by nature in the form of birds, plants & flowers and pond life. A lovely circular walk taking in bird hides and river scenery. The cafe has a wide range of nice snacks to choose from. Good parking and well sign poster off the road.

Excellent place to visit

Wheel-chair access to most areas is good, pram pushing is easy etc.
Go and take in the tranquility of nature, I have seen otters, king Fishers and all manner of "normal" birdlife - Reed Buntins etc.
