The building fronts the kirk yard of the Holy Rude Church.
John Erskine, Earl of Mar, was the keeper of Stirling Castle when he began construction of his magnificent townhouse Mar’s Wark in the 1560s or 1570s. Mar's Wark is a ruined building, the façade is all that survives today of this courtyard townhouse. The building still remains an impressive example of Renaissance architecture. King James VI stayed here.

Walking enroute to the castle these interesting remains of an old building are quite breathtaking, stroll behind into the graveyard of the Church of the Holy Rude for magnificent views of the area and Castle

There is an information board outside. It's of some historical significance and it's clearly an impressive building - or was! The Church of the Holy Rude next door - and the cemetery - are better to visit. Nice views across to the Wallace monument and the Ochils (behind Abbey craig) from the highest point in the cemetery, where there is a bench to savour the vista. I'd recommend looking online for a fairly easy (but interesting) historical walk through Stirling old town. The route passes Mar's Wark, and the Church of the Holy Rude - then goes round Back Walk to the Beheading stone at Gowanhill, and over the Auld brig and along to Causewayhead. Then up to the Wallace monument and along Abbey craig, down to cross the railway and into Cambuskenneth via Ladyneuk road. Note that some websites give this route in reverse - Starting in Stirling, crossing the footbridge to Cambuskenneth abbey and along Ladyneuk road to the bottom of Abbey Craig - Wallace monument - Auld brig - Gowanhill, and Back Walk, etc.

Had this building not been destroyed during the Jacobite rebellion,it would be an impressive part of Old Stirling.The artists impresion outside shows it was a fine looking buiding..Worth taking a photo en route to the castle.

You'll stumble on this ruins if you are heading to the Church of the holy rude. It's what's left of an old residential house of the Earl of Stirling. Only the facade is left and, on its back, a cemetery. Worth passing by.

Close to the entrance of Holy Rude Church in Stirling Old Town are the ruins of Mar’s Wark. The building was built between 1570 and 1572 by John Erskine, Regent of Scotland and Earl of Mar. The building was intended to be the residence of the Erskine family in Stirling. The Earl of Mar was the keeper of Stirling Castle during its construction. Only the frontage of the building remains but it is quite an impressive sight with the Old Town Cemetery as its backdrop.

This ruined building just in front of the Holy Rude Church is associated with Clan Erskine and the Scottish Kings of the middle ages. Part fortification, part Renaissance style house, most of what’s left is the front facade of the building facing the main street. The towers flanking the main entrance, inscriptions and heraldic relief sculptures are all that remains of what was once a grand residence. You can go to the first floor of the building by entering the Church of the Holy Rude where there’s an entrance to the Wark. It's worth going to the back because you get good views of the surrounding area and down the hill. A nice landmark of Stirling and worth a look if visiting the town.

Impressive ruins of old Renaissance townhouse of John Erskine, Earl of Mar sits right next to the Church of the Holy Rude. Of 16th century principal residence of the keeper of the Stirling Castle only facade left. Built in years 1570-1572 it still bears some of its beautiful carved heraldic panels. Main panel, just above the entrance gate presents two unicorns supporting coat of arms of England with their front legs. Additionally, each of the unicorns is holding banner, one with St. Andrew's Cross of Kingdom of Scotland, and another one with the Lion of Kingdom of England. Very characteristic of the building is central piece of facade that resemble gatehouse with two polygonal towers on top of which there are still two gargoyles left. During Jacobite Rising of 1715 house was used as a barracks. Later on, there were plans by Stirling Town Council of turning Mar's Lodging into a workhouse but during Forty-five Rebellion building was occupied by Jacobite troops leading to considerable damage. After fall of uprising Mar's Wark was left to decline into ruin. Town Council tried to demolish remains of the building but their plans were never enacted. You can't miss it on your way to or from Stirling Castle.

It was built as a magnificent Town House in the 16th Century and still retains a lot of the original features although it is now a ruin. Its easy to imagine what it must have been like in the day. There are also good views of the building from the cemetery behind.
