Compact but very interesting local museum.

The museum is small, but packed with items of local interest. There was a friendly welcome, and free admission. I wish I could have spent more time there, but had a train to catch later in the day. Well worth a visit.

Vikings in North Down
mar. 2020
This was a really good experience to North Down. The museum is easy to find and a warm welcome awaits the visitor. Stephen & staff is there to answer all your questions. The centre piece is the Raven maps which are 17th century maps detailing the plantation of Ulster. What is really exciting is the Viking Longroom which replicates life in a Northman camp. Shields, helmets, skins to sit on etc. Really great display. Also outside you will find a early Irish monks thatched hut where you can dress up for some unique pictures.
Really enjoyed this place and would recommend it to anyone interested in history.

Small but nice

The fella at the front desk was most informative on a lot of things Irish. We enjoyed the small museum which at one time was a castle. There were local veggies for sale in the court yard. It was well worth the hour or so we spent there. Great place for kids.

It's a small museum which is in the old Bangor castle. It gives a very good history of the town of Bangor.
Restaurant has very nice variety of food and reasonably priced.
Staff polite and helpful.
It's free to get in and has a gift shop.

Took the train towards Bangor, got off a stop or two early, then walked the coastal path in. After lunch, strolled on to the museum and parkland around it. Walled garden was well worth visiting, and the N Down museum too

The North Down Museum is quaint but enjoyable giving you an insight into the spread of Christianity from 550 to 1300 AD, a look at the Bangor settlement under James Hamilton as well as a look back at the Bronze Age and the raids of the Vikings. It's free and worth a visit. We took about an hour but don't go around school pick up time. There is a school nearby and the parents use the parking area as a waiting zone.
