This place is really incredible & should be on your El Salvador Itinerary, but there are some things you should know…

Definitely would recommend doing this trip on your own as it is manageable & much cheaper. Hotels & online offer tours to this place anywhere from $40-70. When we rented a car for our entire stay that cost about $30-40 per day but through a local as rental car companies are much more expensive. And from El Zonte where we had stayed to Tamanique was about a 30-40 min drive when coming from the surf city beach areas. Or we heard from hikers in our group they took a local bus for around $1.50 from El Tunco. Once you arrive in Tamanique you ask for the local tourist office where you check in & pay $7 pp.

They will offer you hiking poles & I recommend taking one, there were many people on the hike that told me they wished they had taken one. Especially during rain season the trail is a bit slippery & wet. The terrain is very rigid. Here at the office we waited for other people to arrive before making our way down the road that leads you to the falls. They appoint you a guide for the day which is a must as people who have gone on their own have gotten injured and/or lost. This guide is strictly a person a young adult from the ones we had seen that takes you to the falls. They are basically and escort that takes you there & back nothing more. At least the young girl we had was this way. She didn’t explain anything really, and to be honest with her petite size & my partner & I being quite tall & fit people along with the two other guys in our group which were big construction worker grown men. I mean if something happened to us I don’t know how much help this little girl would be, no first aid kit, no radio, no special equipment. She didn’t seem to have any extra skills then just knowing the route as she does it multiple times a day. So you’re really on your own as far as safety so you have to be careful & mindful when doing this excursion. Hiking shoes would be best but in sneakers it’s doable. Seen some guys in flip flops now that I would not recommend. And definitely if you have some water shoes bring them for when crossing the river or getting into the fall as it’s full of rocks that can be slippery & barefoot slows you down. Between falls we went barefoot to not waste time putting on & taking off our shoes. And even barefoot was better as you didn’t slip as much.

But the place is absolutely amazing and something out of this world. The views, the power of the water, again you have to be careful yourself when entering the falls as the water is extremely powerful especially in rain season. The trail is steep & it’s all down hill, lots of stairs, well kept trails though with railings so use them. You really should be fit to do this hike with ease otherwise like another review wrote it’s a place you could get injured or die if you don’t take care. All in all it’s an incredible hidden natural gem of El Salvador & I do recommend this place but keeping some things in mind.

We were told at the office it would be a 30-minute walking tour to the waterfalls and back. Little did I know you had to become Sylvester Stallone in Cliffhanger and literally climb your way out of a deep, sweltering jungle with no chance of rescue if you happen to break your ankle or physically cannot do it. There were no warnings, pictures, signs, wavier forms, or anything to suggest that you're hiking down about 2 miles DOWN into a jungle and you're expected to return the same way you came. The sun was brutal, no breeze, and there were about a thousand ways for you to kill yourself (twisty trails, fallen trees, slippery rocks).

I checked my iPhone health app when I finally made it back and it showed I climbed the equivalent of 43 stories. In other words, a skyscraper. And I didn't even go all the way down.

Recommended if you're: John Rambo, a personal injury attorney, a high endurance athlete, someone with a private helicopter on standby for an emergency rescue.

Not recommended if you're: Overweight, hungover, have swollen feet, a vaper, adverse to heat strokes, not willing to die in a Central American jungle

I heard about this place and decided to give it a try, like everyone else mentioned a tourist guide is a must, so we went to the tourist center and paid $10 per person plus $1 for parking
We were driving a 4X4 and were able to park about 1 kilometer, Alex our guide offered us hiking poles, we declined not knowing how steep the road was, it was a very hot day and it was about 1 in the afternoon, there were benches along the way to take a break, (we didn’t used but were offered by our guide)
The tour guide was friendly and helpful, they are all prepared with a first aid kit in case is needed, we were told is not usual for people to faint
Once we reached the fall, all the heat and fatigue instantly disappeared
The water was clear and fresh, the place was clean and there was just one more family there, we stayed there for a while and then we went up the hill, it wasn’t easy, but it was worth it

With a free day during our time in El Zonte, we hired a driver for a half day and headed out here.

Just a big reminder: What goes down, must come up! So if you’re not into steep ups or downs, this hike to the falls might not be for you.

My friend and I paid $10 each for our official guide, Pedro. The trail and the falls themselves were much quieter than I was expecting for a Saturday — in fact, it was just us and one other couple (and their guide) at the main falls, and then just us at the rock-jumping pool!

We noticed many people had walking poles as they were heading down to the falls — we didn’t and don’t felt we really needed them.

We were suuuuper sweaty by the end of the up up up hike — we hit the sunlight (ie came out from shaded trails) with about 20 minutes left to walk and started sweating profusely … we were very grateful for the small tienda at the end selling water!

This one was one of the best things we did in all of El Salvador! We booked a tour through Wayo Surf in El Tunco (though they did not actually run the tour - we were picked up by a guide seemingly from the park itself). I know it would have been cheaper to drive there and rent a guide on our own, but we did not have a car and it was more convenient to pay for everything at once.

The most important thing is to GO EARLY. We picked the earliest time offered (8AM), and our guide linked up with one other guide who only had one other man with him (making this a three person tour with two guides). We were the first ones to sign the entry log book that morning. The hike down is short but STEEP - wear the right shoes. I didn't have a walking stick but I wish I did. There were some points near the water that were a bit scary because I imagine you could get very hurt if you slipped, but we were able to go slow and see everything without any other people around because we went early. I cannot imagine doing some parts of this trail with a bunch of people around!

Swimming near the waterfall was amazing. After our first dip in the cold water (which felt great because it was VERY hot), we hiked to another spot nearby and were able to jump from the cliffside into the top portion of the falls. The guides go first, and even offered to take pictures/film. It was awesome!

Our guide Pedro was the best. I was a bit nervous about my footing on the hike down, and he helped me navigate. On the way back up, my friend struggled with the incline and he at one point carried her stuff for her, offered a fan to both of us, and paused to make sure we were okay frequently.

If you decide to visit this place (which you should), you will need to hire a guide to enter. They are great, and make sure you bring money to tip them afterwards (this is hard work they do all day in the heat!). Don't forget to bring lots of water and appropriate shoes!

We had a great time! Our group of 11 was ages 6 to 70 and we all enjoyed this. We recommend tennis shoes, even though one adult in our group did wear her favorite flip flops and did fine on all the rocks. We read online beforehand that Abel (+503 7645 9809) was a great guide, so we whatsapped him the night before and he met us at the Tourism office in Tamanique (about 45 minutes from El Zonte) since you have to pay $7/person before you hike. They will assign you a guide if you don’t prearrange one (there was plenty available and we went on a Tuesday morning at 9am). The hike was about 30 minutes down to the first set of waterfalls (steep and lots of steps). And then it took us about an hour plus to get back to our car when we were all done since our group had to take some breaks! With jumping and swimming we were there about 3 hours. We, our children and my parents love to jump off rocks and Abel did as well, so he would jump first to show us where and then if the kids needed something shorter he would show them as well. He helped our 6 year old daughter in all the steeper hike areas which was very nice. There was a little shack selling waters, Gatorades, soda, and some chips. We packed in enough water and snacks, but still bought a few things from it for the kids when we were hiking to the second set of falls. Definitely go! And for afterwards, the town did have some local restaurants that looked good, as well as a park near the tourism office for the kids to play at.

My wife (72) and I (59) completed the hike to all the cascades in the morning and highly recommend it. Three hours provided plenty of time. We took an Uber from our place in Playa Majahual ($10, including $3 tip) to enjoy the view all the way up the valley from the ocean. We returned by public bus ($1) in less than an hour of riding time. Paid $20 for the entrance fee and a mandatory guide, Alexey, who received a $10 tip for his friendly and attentive service. The trail is dirt, rock and gravel. Some parts are steep, including stairs that provide cables to assist descent and ascent. To enter the pools requires some rock scrambling. You do not need an additional guide from outside the pueblo of Tamanique to get onto the trail and feel safe. Alexey got us to all three swimming pools, including the cliff jump at the end—what fun! There are a couple tiendas along the way to purchase water, other drinks and snacks. Although the trail and cascadas are on private land, the experience in this hiking attraction feels more like a well organized nature park. Our guide even picked up trail litter on the return portion. We went on a Saturday and the place was not overcrowded. Go early to “Trips & Tours Cascadas Tamanique” to be more quickly assigned a guide and get hiking and swimming under the waterfalls, including one that features a warm spring!

Went in March. Drove to Tamanique ourselves and found a guide in the village. Everyone you stop seems to be a guide! But to be honest we would not have found the waterfalls without a guide as there are no signposts directing the way (and the gps had sent us completely the wrong way). Guide charged 5 dollars for each of us (we were 3) which was probably on the high side, but heigh ho. We wore good shoes. He wore flip flops. He was twice as fast as us!!! Litter was atrocious, particularly first part of the hike. Such a pity. After you walk about 20-25 minutes you get to a little hut in the middle of nowhere which charges you 2.50 dollars per head and gives you an orange armband to go down to the falls. Water was quite low given the time of year. It doesn’t take too many people for it to feel full/crowded. We skipped jumping in the first pool as it was full. Thankfully we were the first to the second pool. Was quite a climb down to it - again probably due to water level, so I think you get a very different experience depending on time of year. Water was fantastically refreshing. Saw masses of people trailing down to the last pool, so thought we would end on a high and made our way up the hill again.
Would do a second time without a guide, now we know where we are going.
Was a nice mornings outing, but the litter was a real negative.
