In the center of cardo e decumano connection there’s the church built in the 5th century and renovated in 1511 as the architecture of renaissance we can see today.
Facade very simple with a bell tower in Romanic style
Internal with three naves
Some nice frescoes and paintings can be seen over lateral altars

Such a beautiful unobtrusive little church. I felt so at home there, peaceful and understated safe little haven. Lit some candles and had some quiet time. Just lovely.

Bella, la facciata è stata restaurata di recente, dentro avrebbe bisogno di qualche lavoro, consiglio anche di accendere le luci perché è molto buia e non si apprezza tutto a pieno.

Records seem to indicate that, where this church is located, has been a place of worship since before the seventh century, the current church being built upon a pre-existing pagan structure. It appears that in the early 13th century a basilica type structure with three naves was constructed in a Romanesque style. It was during this period that the imposing 28 metre tall bell tower was built.
The church was subsequently greatly changed in the early sixteenth century when it was given a Renaissance facade and several internal alterations were also made including the construction of the current presbytery and a new choir. Following the 1695 earthquake, which caused substantial damage to the church, Pope Innocent XII moved the seat of the diocese, and therefore the cathedral status, to St Nicholas's Church in nearby Bagnoreggio. Restoration work to restore the church following the earthquake has been undertaken progressively over the centuries since with further work being undertaken in the second half of the 20th century.
Externally the church has three decorated portals, one main arched doorway and two smaller arched doorways either side. There is an oculus above each of the smaller doors and four pilasters, two either side of the main portal and one at either end of the building. The upper part of the facade has a rectangular window and above this, just below the roof level which is topped with a cross, a triangular tympanum.
Internally the church has three naves, one central and two aisles that are separated from the main nave by a series of columned archways. There is a vaulted ceiling over the main altar but there is a trussed timber ceiling over the nave. The main altar is relatively small but quite lovely. Some of the side chapels are also worth a look. There is fresco attributed to the school of Pergugino, some reliquary and a 15th century wooden cross sculpted in pear wood said to be from the school of Donatello.
Worth a visit and free to enter.

Where to park?

You can park almost underneith the bridge if they don't close it. From the central square of Bagnoregio (where you can also park if you don't mind the 1.5 km strawl) you drive through the central Via del Corso for 1 km until you pass a church square (Sant Annunziata) on your left. About 400 m down you go right at the big billboard depicting the Civita. Follow the road down to some restaurants just before the bridge. You find a parking almost underneith. Make you go early morning or late afternoon. Enjoy!

There is parking at the end of the town where you take the steps down to the bridge connecting Civita. I noticed cars parked AT the bridge but I have no idea how they got there : there must be a lower road that provides access to that area.

We were there in 2008. The church was undergoing renovations due to earthquake damage. Have the renovations been completed?

I was there last month - the church is fully open and I don't see any ongoing structural work. Had a brief but interesting conversation with the lady at the souvenir stand inside the church about the whereabouts of the local saint Bonaventure.

I was just there in 2013, and I certainly don't remember seeing any huge indications of renovation such as scaffolding, not being able to enter the church, etc. I don't think there were any areas roped off and entrance certainly wasn't barred. The facade was also completely construction-free, so if there is renovation still, I either wasn't aware of it because I was on cloud nine just being in Civita di Bagnoregio or it just wasn't too horrid looking
