It stands majestically on a grand sixteenth-century staircase, where there is also the statue of Grand Duke Ferdinand I, in the northernmost part of the old town. The elegant bell tower is clearly visible from afar, while a rich sculptural decoration embellishes both the front and the right side. It houses numerous important works, the main ones are the Ark of S. Donato, the chapel by Ciuccio Tarlati and the fresco with the Magdalene by Piero della Francesca.

Beautiful experience, the visit to the Cathedral dedicated to Saints Peter and Donatus, a must if you go around Arezzo. ADVICE for those arriving by car, to park in Via Pietri, from where, by means of escalators you reach directly the Piazza del Duomo.

Beautiful paintings under the vaults and detailed stained glass windows.
She is finally quite sober and tall.
There is an imposing organ on the left side and a smaller organ on the right side. This surprised me, because usually the organ is located high at the back.

In the highest point of the city of Arezzo, stands the imposing Cathedral dedicated to San Donato. This important Gothic church was built over a long period of time and contains valuable artistic and religious works in a Gothic architectural context that has seen historians recognize the example closest to the French Gothic churches. It's beautiful! Magnificent are the stained glass windows and rose windows made by Guillaume De Marcillat in 1518 that give unparalleled light to the large interior. Here too we find a work by Piero della Francesca, the "Maddalena" made between 1460 and 1466 where the artist's ability to give light and plasticity to the represented image stands out. I found the wooden sculpture of the "Madonna and Child Blessing" dating from around 1280, a very touching medieval work. In addition, the view of the high altar with the ark of San Donato, a marble work dating from around 1362, gives further depth to the already important beauty of this Cathedral. Admission is free. Visit it because it is an experience!

The Cathedral of Arezzo is in the heart of the historic city center and was built in Gothic style. Large in size, it houses various works and beautiful colored glass windows inside. To visit.

The Duomo of Arezzo, located at the top of the city. Exceptional building, majestic in its height and its frescoes painted under the vaulted ceiling. The quality of the stained glass windows on the left are remarkable for their details.

The facade of the cathedral is perfectly preserved. The explanation is simple. The main facade remained unfinished for many centuries, and only Dante Viviani brought it into a modern, neo-Gothic look in 1900-1914. Like many cathedrals and churches in Europe, the cathedral was built for the burial of relics. In this case, the relics of St. Donatus, Bishop of Rome, beheaded in Arezzo in 363. Marble ark of the XIV century with the body of St. Donatus is the central element of the main altar. At the same time, local Christians put only the body of St. Nicholas in the ark. Donata, the head of the decapitated bishop was sent for safekeeping to the church of Santa Maria della Pieve here in Arezzo. The very construction of the current cathedral is also due to death. In this case, Pope Gregory X, who died in 1276 in Arezzo on his way to Rome from the II Ecumenical Council in Lyon. Before his death, he bequeathed a huge sum of 30,000 gold florins for the construction of a new cathedral. As befits a respected European cathedral, the duomo was built for a long time and was completed only in 1511, when Arezzo lost its independence long ago. In addition to the main altar with the richly carved ark of St. Donatus in the cathedral you need to see the chapel of Our Lady of Consolation, cenotaph of Siuto Tarlati. Masterpieces include the wooden choir of the Great Chapel by Giorgio Vasari, the fresco of Mary Magdalene by Piero della Francesca, the bas-relief of the Baptism of Christ by Donatello and several glazed terracotta by Andrea della Robbia, which he himself invented.

If you visit Arezzo you cannot notice or even stop at the Duomo which stands in the highest part of the city. To get a nice overview you can actually position yourself in front of the entrance to the Giostra del Saracino museum which is located in front of the Duomo, slightly to the right of the structure. To admire the particular Bell Tower you will have to go to the rear part of the Duomo. The Bell Tower has a singular history, rebuilt four times and the last time effectively detaching it from the Cathedral because the previous structure had caused damage to parts of the Cathedral itself with the strong vibrations. Moving inside as soon as you enter you can admire the structure of the Cathedral which has three naves. Personally, I sat on the benches to be able to best photograph the splendid frescoed vaults. The main altar is particularly beautiful and behind it the Ark of San Donato, a beautiful marble structure all with bas-reliefs and behind all this three beautiful stained glass windows stand majestically. To the left of the main altar, the other structure full of bas-reliefs is also very beautiful. In fact it is a huge marble shrine. This is the cenotaph of Guido Tarlati (Bishop and lord of Arezzo in 1300). Don't fail to admire and photograph the chapel that opens on your right before exiting and the facade that looks towards the large exit door is also worth a visit. The Cathedral of Arezzo must be part of the places to look at if you visit the city.

The Duomo stands in the upper part of the historic center, at the top of a staircase; the church has very high cross vaults inside, typical of the Gothic style, and splendid polychrome windows. Among the works that can be admired, the 'Maddalena' by Piero della Francesca and the fourteenth-century marble work 'Arca di San Donato' are worthy of note.
