Beautiful church in Arezzo located in the central Corso Italia. The architectural style is influenced by the acts that lead from Romanesque to Gothic. There is a large bell tower. Internally there are several beautiful works including a polyptych by Lorenzetti.

Like many churches in Italy, Santa Maria della Pieve is built on the site of a Roman temple. Namely, the temple of Mercury. However, archaeologists have discovered that there is still a church of the XI century in the cultural layer. Santa Maria della Pieve is the church of the townspeople, unlike the cathedral, a symbol of the bishop's authority. The struggle of urban communes with ecclesiastical and secular lords was commonplace at that time in Italy and Germany. The current church was built in the XII -XIII centuries in the Romanesque style. I have visited all the more or less significant cities in Italy except Lucca, Pavia and Brescia, but I have not seen anything like this anywhere. If you look at the church from the Piazza Grande, then everything is more or less clear there- the apse with the sky, above it the bell tower. But the facade from Corso Italia is completely unique. It is four-tiered. The lower tier consists of five arches, and two (the second and fourth) are deaf. Next there is a gallery with 12 columns, on the next tier there are 24, and on the last - 32. This visually narrows the building up, and from the Corso Italia side, the building looks like such a medieval Manhattan. The bell tower of the church, completed in 1330, was nicknamed "hundred holes" by the residents of Arezzo because of 40 narrow lancet windows on five floors. Inside, the church has a strict Romanesque interior. During the XVI-XVIII centuries, the interior of the church was decorated with Baroque stucco, angels and other beauties, but during the restoration of 1862-1875, all this was knocked down and the interior of Santa Maria della Pieve was restored to its former Romanesque appearance. This is probably the right thing to do. There are many Baroque churches in Italy, but Romanesque ones can be counted on the fingers...

Another jewel set in the streets of Arezzo is the Parish Church also called the 100 hole church. The nickname refers to the Bell Tower which is located to the right of the facade which has mullioned windows on each side, and is also clearly visible from Piazza Grande. The church is a beautiful example of medieval Romanesque art and was built as a baptismal font. It was rebuilt in the 12th century when 5 arches with 3 orders of columns, each different from the other, were added to the simple Romanesque façade. Also interesting is the allegory of the twelve months placed on the archivolt above the main door. The interior has 3 naves divided by tall columns and wooden trusses. Standing out on the main altar is Lorenzetti's Polyptych depicting the Madonna with some Saints, it was commissioned by Guido Tarlati, bishop of Arezzo. Initially the main altar was Vasari's family tomb, now partly recomposed in the Church of Santa Flora and Lucilla. On the right pillar of the presbytery a fourteenth-century fresco attributed to Giotto but most likely painted by some of his followers representing San Domenico and San Francesco. We also find the reliquary bust of San Donato, the body is located in the Cathedral, patron saint of the city, a stupendous goldsmith's work in silver. It is also inevitable to admire the stone baptismal font.
An austere church but with valuable works, it is certainly worth a visit.

Beautiful medieval church in Arezzo and an example of Romanesque art in Tuscany. The façade is austere and the interior with three naves is simple

The church of Santa Maria della Pieve has an apse that overlooks Piazza Grande, while the facade faces a nearby street.
The interior is quite simple and you can admire a polyptych by Pietro Lorenzetti, from the 14th century, with the Virgin and Child between Saints John the Evangelist, Donato, John the Baptist and Matthew.
In the crypt there is a gilded silver reliquary with some relics of San Donato.
Interesting.

Here the lion's share goes to the polyptych by Pietro Lorenzetti, but the Romanesque/Gothic exterior is also splendid. Since you will certainly visit Piazza Grande you are already there...

Beautiful church whose apse is located in Piazza Grande. It is full of treasures that leave the visitor breathless. To the side of the left nave there is a chapel which often remains closed, but which hides a completely frescoed ceiling and a wonderful altar. What is most striking, however, is the main altar. Stupendous!
