A small church built between the 13th and 14th centuries that, with its sober façade embellished with a sail bell tower, dominates the square of the same name. Important Gothic example of the city that houses valuable frescoes, unfortunately mostly deteriorated, and especially the wooden Crucifix above the high altar, an extraordinary work of Cimabue’s youth. Recommendation to turn on the lighting by inserting the coins in the appropriate device located on the right side of the nave.

A little outside the historic center, with lots of nature behind it, you come across the beautiful Basilica of San Domenico in an irregular and quiet square. The construction of this church dates back to 1275 and it was also the church in which the first conclave in the history of the Church of Rome took place. Over time, numerous changes were made to the interior of the large nave, and in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries the precious original frescoes were recovered, some of which are of considerable value and are still partly visible. The architectural style is Gothic with the façade in pietra forte, the asymmetric structure gives a very particular characteristic to this beautiful church. Cimabue's Crucifix is a moving masterpiece! Painted by the artist in his youth, it can be dated to the late 1260s. The stone sculpture "Madonna with Child" is very beautiful, a work by an unnamed artist from Arezzo. This precious sculpture in the past 1339 was part of a series of sculptures that decorated the walls of the city of Arezzo. I particularly liked the visit to this beautiful and isolated church.

Visit April 2023-
Overlooking the trapezoidal square of the same name where the preachers gathered the people, the asymmetrical façade in pietra forte and the adjoining bell tower stand out.
Above the Lombard Romanesque portal we can admire in the lunette above it a fresco by Angelo de Lorentino depicting the Madonna and Child between Saints Domenico and Donato. The interior, like other buildings of the mendicant ecclesiastics, consists of a hall covered by wooden trusses and three apse chapels. On the counter-facade are frescoes by Spinello l'Aretino and Parri di Spinello. The Dragondelli Chapel with a Gothic aedicule is the only Arezzo-style altar chapel remaining, inside on the wall is a fresco representing the adolescent Jesus preaching. The master work, however, is immediately revealed at the entrance and is the large wooden crucifix placed in front of the main chapel and the work of Cimabue, one of his very first works, a Christ with Byzantine features and with many details, a work which alone is worth the visit to this beautiful church, which cannot be missed during a visit to the city.

If you visit Arezzo you cannot miss visiting the Basilica of San Domenico to take one of the most beautiful photos of your holiday in this city. There are many works on the site but as soon as you enter the back of the church you cannot fail to notice Cimabue's Crucifix. A sublime work in terms of workmanship and colours. A piece of advice, as soon as you arrive in front of the crucifix if you look to your left you will notice a device where you can insert a 1 euro coin and turn on a dedicated light facing the crucifix to give you the opportunity to take excellent photos (I didn't particularly pay attention to the duration but think so at least a minute). The basilica as a whole is worth a visit.

Small church, which still has the title of minor basilica, built in Gothic style starting from 1275.
It was then deconsecrated in 1782 and remained abandoned until the beginning of the 20th century, when it was reopened for worship and the front porch was added.
The asymmetrical façade which includes the small bell tower is beautiful.
Inside, the Crucifix painted by Cimabue stands out, one of the masterpieces of thirteenth-century painting.
In addition to this, several frescoes, including one depicting Saints Dominic, Michael the Archangel and Paul.
A church that deserves to be visited.

Beautiful church with very ancient frescoes.
Cimabue's perfectly preserved crucifix reigns supreme. Cimabue was the first to give volume and shape to bodies, a genius of his time and Giotto's teacher.

Beautiful, majestic. Gothic style church. Free entry.
The main chapel is dominated by a splendid Crucifix, an early masterpiece by Cenni di Pepo known as Cimabue. Extraordinary.

In Arezzo, which is crowded with cars (in spite of the ZTL), this church is a bit out of the way and is frankly beautiful from the outside, apart from the portico mentioned above which in any case doesn't ruin the whole thing too much. The interior (sweltering due to the summer heat, evidently never ventilated) is full of works of art of great interest, among which Cimabue's crucifix stands out, which appears all too new, perhaps following a vigorous restoration. Beautiful Madonna with child from the Della Robbia school restored by Fai. The Cecilian organ is horrible and fortunately is rarely seen.
To visit calmly and with a specific guide.
(the beautiful external square has been deprived of the planting on the left, a shame)
