The ancient abbey of Montecassino is a great center of spirituality, recognized as the largest and among the most famous monastery in the world. Its history is incredible when you consider that it has been completely destroyed and rebuilt several times, most recently during the Second World War. Its position on the summit of Monte Cassino, makes it unique but it is also the origin of the problems that has made it so vulnerable and subject to deep damage. Inside there is the tomb where the remains of San Benedetto and Santa Scolastica rest. It is advisable to book a guided tour that allows you to admire and learn about the artistic wonders present and jealously preserved and the history of this incredible sacred place.

Times that are published bring closure at 6.30 pm but do not say that only in spring - summer..... if you arrive at 4.45 pm at the entrance door abbey you find it closed!

Wonderful place, beautiful view and place maintained to perfection.
Free entrance to the abbey, with only € 5 you can visit the museum, money well spent because there is so much to see including the reproduction of the demolition of the abbey itself, to see everything I recommend taking 2-3 hours

A wonderful experience. We arrived on a day of very thick fog, but as we climbed the hairpin bends towards the abbey, the landscape became increasingly clear, sun and blue sky. The fog, downstream, became a clear, dense sea, from which emerged only the peaks of the surrounding hills that seemed to form an archipelago of islands. In a short time we arrived at the sight of the largest monastery in the world, light of white stones, which welcomes with the inscription PAX, and it is so, because peace is immediately perceived, as the grandeur, the strength of a place terribly destroyed and magnificently resurrected several times. You have to fill drl silence, the beauty of all its spaces, the entrance cloister, the cloister of Bramante, the golden architecture of the abbey church, the museum, rich in works and artifacts, the herbalist, with excellent and exquisite products. And all over the crypt with the remains of St. Benedict and St. Scholastica, crypt of golden mosaics, which is accessed by a vault-mosaic of stars. The profound human and spiritual history of Saint Benedict is known, perhaps less his Medal, a sacramental, sacred sign, to which numerous testimonies of healing and protection are attributed for those who carry it with them: Saint Benedict was also a powerful exorcist.

...it is said to be the largest monastery in the world by size!!...and the second oldest in Italy!!...it is the Benedictine monastery!!...that dominates Monte Cassino!!...exactly!!...is the Abbey of Monte Cassino!!...majestic and imposing!!...was founded by St Benedict of Norcia!!...just on the site where there was a temple dedicated to Apollo!!...the Abbey over time has suffered various damages!!!...due to earthquakes!!!...destruction and bombing!!!...but it was always rebuilt!!!...I did a guided tour!!...with the service by reservation!!...I did a nice full tour of the building!!!...I saw the Basilica of San Benedetto Abate in Monte Cassino!!...the beautiful Abbey Church that was destroyed during the Second World War!!...but then completely rebuilt and dedicated to Paul VI!!...the cloisters area...all very beautiful!!...I liked the entrance!!...with a beautiful garden and in the center you can see the bronze sculpture depicting St Benedict on the verge of death!!!...yes!!!!!!...because it is said that he died standing!...after taking communion and was helped by his disciples to stand!!!...and then he had his arms raised as a sign of prayer!!!...I saw the ancient part of the monastery!...then leaving the Cathedral you find the entrance to the Abbey Museum!!!...and here are various elements of the history and art of the monastery!!...samples of printed manuscripts...s...silverware...s...sacred vestments!!!!...and much more!!!!!!!!!to see!!!!!then you also pass through the shop!...where the medals of St Benedict are located!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!️

We were at the end of October visiting the abbey of Montecassino and had a really good time. Beautiful abbey that in every corner remembers the times that were. Well maintained (pity only for a part cordoned off but still the works are necessary). I'll be back.

Famous place of worship well preserved, from which to enjoy a breathtaking view.
You climb up with car, parking 3 euros, alternate climbs and descents so not suitable for very elderly people or people with reduced mobility

Fantastic location. The structure of the abbey is extremely interesting. The fact that it has been entirely rebuilt does not bother too much because the restoration is of excellent standard. Of course, the spirituality of the place is lost a little.
....but
I find it unacceptable that the museum does not have a section dedicated to the history of the abbey. Millennial and extremely interesting history.
Certainly a film on the latest events is not exhaustive
There is still someone who can read and loves to deepen

The only toilet available to visitors is located outside in the paid parking lot. Either you feel that it is the only chance you have before starting the visit or you can put a sign at the entrance as follows: leave any hope you who enter!

Beautiful view of the whole Ciociaro territory. Visiting the abbey and noticing the beauty of the cloisters and church, you think about how it had been destroyed and the strength and tenacity of man in rebuilding.

Where exactly in Cassino is the bus stop to Montecassino Abbey? Is it at the Viale Ivanoe Bonomi street close to the train station? If yes, to go to the Abbey should I wait at the stop on the train station's side or the opposite?

So sorry to be delinquent in responding. As there were two of us, we took a cab which we found reasonably priced; he gave us his card and we rang to have him return us.
I certainly hope you've now visited and returned home. As I write, the news is All-Covid, All the Time.

Decisamente sì. È piacevolissimo visitare un complesso così bello ma farlo con qualcuno che ne spieghi la storia, le ricchezze artistiche e magari qualche aneddoto rende il tutto molto più "gustoso".
