We stayed in an apartment opposite the Roman Villa. I liked the museum. It wasn't big. They offered an app for more information, but it immediately crashed and could not get it to work. Fortunately there were also signs with English translations the mosaics. I saw many variations in the mosaics and I found them remarkably large.

Very interesting for people fascinated with ancient history and art. Very well preserved late-Roman period mosaics and some wall frescoes. Sth special are fruit trees (figs, apples, plums, walnuts) and fragrant wild herbs (esp thyme) growing around the former dining room and kitchen area-you never know but can imagine these are descendants of the plants used by ancient inhabitants of the place…

A relatively small site with some very good mosaics. It was nice to wander around in an crowded site. There appears to be ongoing archaeological investigations.

Very affordable prices (4€ over 25 and 2€ for others). Audio guide in French which is a significant plus. There are still some very beautiful mosaics

We learned about the Roman villa of Desenzano, brought to light starting in the 1920s, thanks to our Lombardy region museum card which includes the visit and, intrigued, passing through Desenzano, we stopped to visit it. Even though the excavation area was not particularly large, we appreciated the route and the mosaics.
The villa of Desenzano in fact represents the most important testimony in northern Italy of the great late ancient villas. It enjoyed an excellent landscape position as it was built along the lake shore and environmental because it was located just north of the Via Gallica, which connected Bergomum, Brixia and Verona.
The building, originally overlooking the lake, was built at the end of the 1st century BC. Several building phases followed and what is visible today largely belongs to the first half of the 4th century AD, when the building underwent a complete reorganization of the spaces, divided into a sector A, representative and residential, a sector B, predominantly residential character and two sectors C and D, with a spa and residential function. We do not know the name of the owners but it is probable that it was Flavius Magnus Decentius, brother of the emperor Magnentius (350–353 AD), from whom the name of the city of Desenzano also derives. Before entering the archaeological area there is a small Antiquarium where fragments of statues, frescoes, coins and materials found during the excavations are preserved.
Sector A is the most interesting one. The mosaic floors present geometric characters, cupids on racing chariots, cupids harvesting the grapes, cupids among plant racemes, beasts attacking wild animals, kantharoi from which branches emerge, cupids fishermen placed on boats or rocks with fishing rods and buckets, psychai coronariae that they intertwine garlands and cupids that make up festoons of fruit, allegories of Spring and Summer, perhaps the portion that has been preserved and which included the other two seasons now lost, a male figure within a bucolic landscape, only partially preserved , with animals and trees interpreted as the Good Shepherd or Orpheus among the animals. In sector B you can observe opus sectile floors and polychrome mosaics. In this area, a torcular for pressing olives or grapes was probably installed, as shown by a large footprint and the discovery of the base of an olive press and a stone counterweight for the press.
We recommend downloading the guide available directly from the villa's website and available in different languages, a useful tool for a better understanding of the archaeological spaces and history of the villa.
