Vraiment dommage

We’ve been on 4 holidays with Tui (who own Crystal Ski) in the past 5 years and on every single one there’s been a more than 2 hour delay to either a flight or a transfer, but this last holiday (and it will be our last ever with Tui after our experience) was by far the worst.
The journey to our hotel was relatively uneventful. The flight was on time for once and our transfer was waiting, but they forgot to give us our welcome packs, including our equipment hire vouchers and lift passes, on the coach. That meant we had to wait around for a rep the following morning who we were told would turn up before 8am but didn’t get to us until 8:30.
Our next interaction with Crystal Ski was that evening when the rep came to our hotel. We had a couple of basic broad questions to ask about piste conditions and good places to eat, but the very vacant rep, who claimed she had been here for a month and knew everything about the resort, said she “didn’t really know” about what the pistes were like and could only tell us about places to eat based on a few rumours she’d heard. From the glazed look on her face I expect if we’d asked her about the clubs open at 2am we’d have got a more helpful answer.
But the thing that put us off ever booking with Crystal Ski or Tui again was the journey home. After 45 minutes of waiting for our transfer outside we got a message to say the coach couldn’t pick us up because it didn’t have enough luggage space! Bearing in mind that Crystal Ski knew exactly which passengers were travelling and how much luggage they had booked on the plane, it seems like very basic logistics to arrange a coach or coaches with enough space, but Crystal Ski couldn’t manage this either. The message said they were trying to arrange alternative transport and would make contact again later. They eventually made contact to say another coach was being sent but wouldn’t be with us until 1hr and 35mins after our original transfer time. They claimed not a single taxi in resort was available sooner but offered us £25 each in compensation for the delay and promised we would miss our flight…
Finally, 1hr and 55mins after our original transfer time the coach arrived and the driver was a star, driving like he was on mission to get us to the airport as quickly as possible. However whilst on the coach I got a call from the Crystal Ski rep at the airport asking me where we were and to check on my phone mapping app when we’d be arriving (why was I now responsible for their logistics??). I told them my predicted time and he said he’d ask the flight team to wait for us. The next information I got was a text to say that our taxi from Manchester airport to Birmingham airport (where we were supposed to be flying to) had been booked for 10pm! What a great way to discover we weren’t going to be on our flight! The airport rep then phoned back to say we’d miss our flight (despite multiple promises we wouldn’t) and they were booking us on the plane to Manchester. When I asked if they were going to cover the extra parking charges we would incur at Birmingham (roughly £50-60) they said they would and would likely offer us more than that for the inconvenience we’d suffered. This was reiterated at the airport when the rep said he would arrange a further £100 compensation in addition to the £25 per person we’d accepted earlier.
Eventually we got home, several hours later than planned and via Manchester, and awaited our compensation but it never arrived. I have emailed Crystal Ski and had no response. So a truly poor showing from them and absolutely no communication or compensation. They even asked us to write a Trust Pilot review and I was more than happy to accept!

Today Monday, February 2, the last week before the school holidays, usually a very busy week.
A crazy world at the start of the Shepherds lifts. To climb, we take the cabins of the Games, intending to continue with the chairlift of the White Hare. It is closed!!! Information taken from the ski lifts, we are told that it is only open on weekends and school holidays. It's really making fun of the world, there were fewer people on Saturday than today. Ditto, yesterday full of closed tracks for competitions from the Signal.
Maybe we should think about the holidaymakers who pay a lot of money... here it builds, it builds, but there are no extra lifts in the 20 years that we have been coming to the resort. Deteriorating ski conditions

Our first time visiting and we were excited at the prospect of having other activities on site alongside the slopes such as swimming and the ice rink so ungraded to premium pass. What an absolute waste of money! Do not upgrade!! The ice rink was continuously being used for training purposes or closed. Even when making enquiries at the desk and being told to return during certain times, it still then wasn’t available. We were also refused access to the swimming pools due to not having Lycra swimwear (which we were not advised of in advance). When contacting customer service to request a refund for the upgrade due to them being unusable, our request was denied. Save your money and stick to the slopes!

Thanks for your comment. Sorry you could not use your Premium pass ! The ice rink has wide open range but true, it's closed for several reasons. Bad luck it was on your choosen times. For the lycra, it's quiet a rule in France so it's why it hasn't been noticed. Glad you had great times on the slopes !!

We went skiing 2 days on January 9 and 10, the second day we took half-day passes, due to the strong winds, only one lift was open at the resort of Huez after more than 1 hour waiting we had still not passed.
We have requested a refund of our packages which was valid only before 12:30. They were unable to do so but advised us not to activate them and to ask for the refund from customer service.
Today the customer service tells us about the opening of the lifts from 11 am and refuses to refund us for packages when they have not been able for more than an hour and a half to provide ski transport
The sale of the packages should not have taken place and the customer service does not recognize it!!!
At 55.5€ per half day, they give you a 20% discount and find their business practices normal!!!
My advice... choose another station!

We were stuck 30 minutes in the gondola of the white peak 5 meters from the point of arrival at 3,300 meters.
The gondola was so crowded that there was discomfort and waiting conditions were complicated (impossible to move, sit, remove bags, lack of spaces for small children).
In addition, the person in charge of the cabin informed me (with a big smile) that normally it could hold 20 additional people!
I guess the number of people had to be clearly defined without equipment (blouses, backpack, etc...) or snowboards that take the place of a person.
It seems obvious that this over-concentration leads to a problem of safety and stress management in the event of an incident.
1 - Are we cattle to concentrate at this point in one place?
2 - What is the point of being able to pre-book a time slot for the climb if you treat customers with such disrespect?
3 - Finally, what happens to the quality of your resort and what image does it leave for foreign tourists?
Ps: we also found that the damage at the top of the black runway la Sarenne had not been done that same day.

First visit to this resort and ski area. Did not disappoint. Although we lost the first 2 days to heavy snow and strong winds, the remainder of the week was fabulous skiing. Great resort to give an all around experience.

Pros:
Lots of après ski activities: nice restaurants, bars, sports, swimming pools...
Few ski lifts,
Some mythical tracks (Tunnel, Sarenne...),
Incredible view,
Very accessible but...
Cons:
...very largely undersized compared to the number of beds - complete saturation during school periods, victim of its success and the multiplication of real estate projects in recent years (a huge one is planned in place of a car park in the Shepherds),
Low of the area quite arbitrary for good skiers,
Sun exposure unfortunately has become a handicap nowadays,
Too exposed to the wind and pretty fast closures of even the smallest lifts, I've never seen that elsewhere,
Endless waits (minimum 35 minutes down to the shepherds at 1800m outside meal period 12:15-13:30) without any intervention of the people at the lifts to try to get the dumpsters full (except on Marmots 1, the girls pressed and helped people),
I was able to do Sarenne and Tunnel only in very bad weather and at 1pm otherwise it is minimum 1h waiting,
I've never waited so long for the lifts yet I've been going every year during school for 10 years, even to the middlemen, everything is saturated and it plays elbows,
No queue for single people to save time and complete the skips, incomprehensible to me a lot of stations do,
Liaison with Auris from another age, but we're at least walking,
We quickly went around the slopes in fact because most of the area is very low and or difficult to access from the view of the waiting time at the lifts,
Drunk guys coming down to the beginners' slopes right after ski school...
And things I've never seen anywhere else:
bouncers present at the closure of the lifts at the bottom to allow to quietly close the lift 10 minutes before the indicated time (true!). I saw in particular a person who did not speak French who wanted to take Rifnel to gain 10 minutes of walking after picking up his daughter from the ski course => refused by an ice cabinet at the entrance of the Rifnel. "You just walk" he said. Well, that's cool. You know, we have to close the lift on time, not another minute. Daddy came home with his 8-year-old daughter... well, on foot. Beautiful picture of the resort for this tourist!
I specify that I already knew the resort (last stay 15 years ago) outside school periods...
I won't be back soon!

In 2024 we are amazed to see the priority of noisy Things to do at the expense of the well-being of walkers and wildlife!!
Indeed we of the 15/8 route of the Col de Sarenne very frequented by cars and camping cars...

What about herds and other animals...

Bonjour Catherine,

For more than 30 years I have been visiting this station every year. And always with the same pleasure.
A huge ski area and perfectly well equipped. With constant new investments.
A real pleasure to ski. And when the snow is good and the sky blue ..... paradise.

Ski pass refund? Did anyone manage to get a refund? I was surprised last week by the staff at Vaujany, (part of Alpe d’Huez area) lift pass office, who told me there would be ‘no refunds’. I’d purchased a 6 day ‘whole area’ pass for 250 euros, but high winds had closed 95% of the ski area. They did manage to open a tiny ‘Beginner areas’ close to Vaujany village but this would disappoint a competent skier in a very short space of time. As in the U.K. I believe France has a consumer law which states that any business must supply the product or service advertised? The lift operators did not supply the service I had paid for and I was told by the station staff that it is not our fault as we do not control the weather! They did suggest I raise a complaint saying that if enough people complain maybe the management would review their refund policy! I did follow this advise but it is now several days later and I have not even had an acknowledgment email? This leads me to the conclusion that they do not treat their customers fairly and sooner or later they will regret this tawdriness. I will certainly warn anyone I speak to that Alpe d’Huez should be avoided. Had I been offered an immediate refund of this missed day, I would have been much more positive about this resort.
I also believe that major ‘closures’ due to high winds will be a prevailing issue for this resort as the key routes up the mountain are large cable cars. The main lift out of Vaujany is the size of a single decker bus and this will obviously be blown about and stopped well before any chair lift would.

First ski trip, any tips and help and also Where is best to book a chalet for roughly 5 people?
Skrevet 6. juni 2019
Since it’s a first ski trip I suggest you use a tour operator such as Crystal, Neilson as they cater for small self catering chalets and full board, they will also cover ski hire and lessons.

Can you please tell me how long in distance and time to ski the green runs are, although I can ski I am green to blue only and like long motorway type runs. Thankyou
Skrevet 17. februar 2019
In Alpe d'huez area itself there is Marcels farm, chez Roger that are straight forward. Chez Roger gives two options. There are also several other green runs taking two to five minutes. The blues from Marmotte 2 and up to pic blamc will take longer and there are nice ong blue runs down to neighbouring Os and Villiard. Easy motorway green run from top pf Vaujany lift. If you do take the chair to Auros the blues can be icy as the sun isn't on them.

Hi, are you allowed to carry your snowboard on the chair lifts or do you have to have your foot strapped in? Thank you.
Skrevet 2. april 2018
I always went with one foot strapped. Didn't actually think much more than that, but people do ride the lifts with no boards or skis too, so not sure if its a rule.
I dont see why you would want it off anyway. 4 people on a chair lift with four boards? not sure where you would put them all and it wont be very comfortable.
As mentioned there are gondolas so if you dont feel comfortable with a board on your foot go for that option.
Skrevet 10. april 2018
Please can someone help? What is the best area of the main resort to stay in with children who will be doing ski school? We don't want a huge trek every morning. Also is the telecentre bucket lift free or will we need lift passes to use? Any advise or recommendations very welcome. TIA
Skrevet 10. februar 2018
Alpe De Huez 1850 is where you want to stay! Anywhere near the main DMC lift as that is right by the ski school.
