Fantastic art collection including several Gainsboroughs. Family home with beautiful furniture. Very interesting.

Being dropped off by the coach right at the front door was pretty good. Inside there were some stunning paintings and helpful guides. The gardens were a little disappointing though.

Visited the Castle today, arriving by the small coach provided to take us (17 in the group) from the Radnor Arms pub. All very efficient as the driver was dead on time and the journey very short and quick. After having been dropped off at the front door three guides were there to greet us, hand out a complimentary booklet on the property and give an introductory speech. We were asked if we were interested in the decorative as well as the fine arts which, thankfully (for me) the majority agreed upon. The circulatory tour began on the ground floor and the canvases on display were completely astonishing. The sheer number of Gainsboroughs and Reynolds was almost overwhelming - but anyone interested in impeccable art works will be stunned by the rest of the collection, too. The guides alternated amongst the different rooms - each one obviously talking on their particular areas of specialisation. Not only were they good at their job, they were also very caring of people who might have been experiencing difficulties on such a long tour (2 hours) After the ground floor one is shown the 1st floor and at the conclusion there is time to view the grounds and formal gardens and take photos (outside only throughout).
Have lived in the area for a long time and never even knew of its existence. Well, I do now and given the chance would return in a heartbeat.

We visited on the National Gallery scheme, which takes some planning. Tour of the castle with a small group, and with very knowledgeable guides. Picture collection is terrific. Well worth the effort of organising. Thank you.

Great tour with lots of info about the priceless works of art and the grounds of the castle. Glad I stumbled across it. We were the only Americans in the group. Must book ahead through the British Museum 😉

Longford Castle is a truly remarkable place, which should be on any art lovers' "to do" list. The setting is terrific in a grand family home that boasts of what is probably the largest Private Collection in England. The collection is astounding since it is ongoing, with modern works amongst a magnificent array of older paintings and artefacts. The partnership between the Family and the National Gallery is of long standing. The tours arranged by the National Gallery are well organised and prevent overcrowding: guides are knowledgeable and helpful and the pace is right. A visit will appeal to anyone with a strong interest in the arts, and is all the better with a bit of homework beforehand. It is not really suitable for young children.

While agreeing with the other reviewers, I would add a note to the effect that most of the paintings are portraits. The rooms they hang in are amazing and the furniture is first rate, but 2 hours of looking at portraits (was that the third Earl or the second?) started to get a bit wearisome for me. Broadly speaking, our very nice guides were better on who's who than the evolution of painting styles - though there was a little of this (and very interesting too). Our group of 20 were asked where our interests lay at the start of the tour. If I was returning I would ask for the family history to be kept to the minimum.
Lovely rooms, lovely furniture, lovely light, lovely setting.

It's a bit of a James Bond scenario to get access to this place but it's worth it. So let me clarify, we needed to do an online booking and they wanted to know our names and address and we needed photographic ID when we arrived...I guess you can't be too careful. It's still a family home crammed with family portraits, we saw a brilliant hand made steel chair made in the Renaissance said to be worth over £200 million.
A small booklet helped to guide us around the rooms along with the aid of the National Trust workers. It was great.

This is the most extraordinary house and garden. The garden is being recreated with great flair and taste, however there are parts which are already established like the magical carpet of wild cyclamen (hundreds of them) under a vast beech tree. The river, with an 18th century bridge and swans, borders one edge of the garden, and the landscape looks as if it is waiting for Constable.
The house is fascinating, triangular in shape and Elizabethan, but renovated by Salvin in the late 19th century, very sympathetically.
The collection, both of paintings and furniture, is the star. The family have been collecting since the 18th century and though there have been some sales (Holbein's The Ambassadors in the National Gallery, London and the Velasquez of Juan Pareja now in the Metropolitan Museum NY) it is extraordinary what they have been able to still keep and are buying in the modern field.
This is a memorable place to visit, especially if you are interested in works of art situated in the house where they have been for sometimes hundreds of years.
There is one snag, this is still a private house, and not entirely easy to get a booking to see. You go through the National Gallery London, via their web-site to see availability.
The tours have to be guided, and usually this brings a groan of despair to my lips as guides can be so boring, but not at Longford, the knowledge of the guides is amazing and the passion with which they describe the works of art, from Elizabeth I's Jewel case to an Elephant boy by Laura Ford is infectious.
I have seldom spent such an enjoyable 3 hours.

Longford Castle must be one of England's best kept secrets! It is such a treasure house with an amazing collection of art and furniture, but difficult to visit. They offer a few private visits each year and also a few public tours that have to be booked through the National Gallery, but they are very quickly snapped up. The guides are brilliant, - knowledgeable and welcoming. Highly recommended if you can get there . . . . . . You will be greatly rewarded with portraits by Reynolds and Gainsborough, extraordinary Tudor portraits and interesting contemporary art as the collection is still growing. If very fortunate the tour of the house can be followed by a wander in the sunshine around the colourful formal gardens alonside the river Avon.

Hi Chris, are your sure it is not possible to visit the Castle without a guided tour from Nat Gallery? Maybe a guided tour there is available? Or...? I see that the tour is already fully booked on the dates we could visit....
Thanks
Silvia
