This small museum has a lot of history in its few buildings. I came by bus from Dunedin but if you are driving through it is definitely worth stopping. It is only open on Sunday afternoon from 12:30 - 3:30.

Het Otago museum is gratis toegankelijk voor de gewone tentoonstelling. Die al heel uitgebreid is en veel te bieden heeft over de historie van de streek

I wandered into this museum strolling through Portobello.
What a find!
The historical society have done a terrific job of curating this. Lots of interesting and fun things to see and snap.
We spent at least half an hour here. And it wasn't even open!
Would love to come back when it's open.

We stopped here on our way to the Albatross and Penguin centre at Pukekura. The sign on the gate said to ask at the shop for the key. We had to wait a couple of minutes until Warren arrived to let us into the museum. He was absolutely charming and spent a long time with us pointing out various exhibits and how they had been acquired.
The main museum is a replica house stuffed with photographs and artefacts. The barn at the back has such quirky exhibits as a radar station and a gaol. We really thought we would be able to spend 1/2 and hour or so but in the end we must have spent a couple of hours there. They even had a lamp house from a lighthouse. Definitely worth a visit!
