On a weekday in the first week of November, my family spent about 5 hours at the beautiful Naejangsan National Park (내장산국립공원), which is one of the most popular autumn foliage attractions in South Korea and considered by many as the best mountain in South Korea to view autumn leaves. The name Naejangsan comprises 'nae' meaning ‘inside’, 'jang' meaning ‘concealed’ and ‘san’ meaning ‘mountain’ – it is undoubtedly a mountain with hidden wonders!

Getting there & tickets
Naejangsan National Park is located near Jeongup, a city in North Jeolla Province (Jeollabuk-do) in the southwest of South Korea. We took a Jeollabuk Shuttle outside of Seoul Station exit 15. The journey was about 4 hours including a 15-minute stop. All the buses and cars cannot enter the national park. After alighting from buses and cars, everyone has to walk toward the ticket booth at the park entrance. Entrance fee is ₩3000, one way shuttle bus is ₩1000, a round trip cable car ticket costs ₩9000 (adult) and ₩6000 (child) and a one-way cable car ticket costs ₩6000 (adult) and ₩4000 (child).

The attraction:
Upon reaching Naejangsan (Mount Naejang) base, we queued 20 minutes for the shuttle bus so as to cut short the travel time along the uphill road. After alighting from the bus, there are 3 attractions that you can go: Naejangsa Temple (walk about 500 metres), Baekyangsa Temple (walk about 900 metres) and Yeonjabong Peak Observatory. (There is also Dodeok Falls and Geumseon Falls; both can be reached by following the valley on the left of the ticket booth). The base of Naejangsan (Mount Naejang) with the two temples has beautiful scenery decorated by the autumn foliage. However, the scenery is even more spectacular at the Yeonjabong Peak Observatory, and that was where my family and I went.

To get to the Observatory, there are two routes – the first is hiking 2 kilometres of steep steps and rocky path which takes one to two hours depending on one’s fitness. The second route is to take the cable car to the upper station and then walk about 300 metres (took about 8 minutes) over uneven path and steps. Due to the limited time of only 5 hours for the group, my family and I opted for the second route (cable car plus walking). The cable car station is a short 100-metre walk after alighting from the shuttle bus. Because the cable car ride was very popular, we queued 40 minutes; but during queueing, we ate snacks bought from Lotte restaurant at the cable car station. Interestingly, we only queued 20 minutes at around 3pm for the return cable car ride down to the base.

At the Yeonjabong Peak Observatory platform, we enjoyed a 360 degrees panoramic view of 8 mountain peaks (Yeonjibong, Manghaebong, Bulchulbong, Seoraebon, Woryeongbong, Gachibong, Sinseongbong (highest at 763 metres), Janggunbong) and the fiery red and deep orange autumn foliage “burning” the mountains and the valley, where the cable car station, the lake, Uhwajeong pavilion and Sinsun Waterfall can be seen. In fact, you could hike about 700 metres to reach the actual Yeonjibong peak from the cable car upper station deck.

For the return trip, my family and I did not queue to ride the shuttle bus back to the Park entrance. Instead we walked about 1.5 hour for about 1.65 kilometre. We did not regret because along the way, we enjoyed the natural scenery of the lake with blue-roof Uhwajeong pavilion and Sinsun Waterfall against the mountain backdrop; this was followed by the amazing and stunning autumn foliage of purple, red, orange, yellow, brown and green along the famous 108 Danpung Tunnel Road lined and covered with 108 maple trees – we have never seen anything like this and it was a truly unforgettable experience!

After a tiring day of walking, we ate dinner at one of the restaurants outside the park entrance before we embarked the Jeollabuk Shuttle bus at 5:30pm for the long 4-hour ride back to Seoul.

As this attraction requires plenty of walking, I definitely recommend a pair of sturdy yet comfortable walking shoes and bottled drinking water. It can get quite cold and windy up on the mountain (especially in autumn), so wear a sweater. My family and I were blessed with a sunny day when we were there.

We really enjoyed being high up in the mountain, soaking in the cool refreshing air and the gentle wind and the spectacular display of autumn colours on the foliage along the road. Needless to say, the Naejangsan National Park is one national park that you would not want to miss, not just in autumn but also in spring (blooming of azaleas and cherry blossoms), lush green summer and snow-covered winter! This National Park is one of the “100 Must-Visit Tourist Spots” for 2021-2022 and 2023-2024 (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the Korea Tourism Organization)

I went to Naejangsan almost every year in recent years. The autumn colours were fascinating. Admittedly they varied from year to year depending on weather conditions. This year, the summer was unusually long and the weather was dry, so the autumn colours were inferior to those of last year. It was also a cloudy day with very little sunshine, so the visit was a little disappointing. The consolation was that the sun came out momentarily when I was taking photos of the Uhwajeong Pavilion.

Stayed in Naejangsan for 3 nights in Haniljang Motel in the 1st week of November 19 which located very near to park entrance. The peak of foliage is on 2nd week of November this year. The foliage is beautiful even though it is not at its peak. The weather is very cold in the morning that we have to wear gloves and the sky is dark at 5pm. Tourist could buy park entrance ticket at 3000won/day at the entrance and walk a short distance to a ticket booth to buy the shuttle bus tickets at 1000won/way. The bus will go to cable car station. For those who do not go to the observatory, I would suggest to walk towards the Wooden gate and up Naejangsan temples for sightseeing instead. From the temples walk back cable car bus stop and another 4km back to park entrance, towards the Naejang Information Centre. In this journey you will expect to hear local musicians singing lovely songs, see beautiful and colorful foliage, serene pavilion and few tangerine trees. A short distance outside the park entrance, there are tents where the local sell their meals. Along the roadsides there are sale of fry red bean and ginseng fritters, seasonal small tangerine and persimmon, etc. There are many restaurants but only one coffee cafe and convenience store beside 171 bus stop. At the cable car station, there is a lotteria fast food restaurant selling burger and it opens at 7am. For tourists who do not prepare for hiking I do not suggest to take one way cable car to observatory and walk down as the route down is slippery and not much to see. Overall, we had enjoyed the Naejangsan National Park very much. A must visit place during autumn in Korea.

At the foot of the mountain, you can either take a bus (1000 won) or hike up. I decided t take the bus going up and then walk going down. The last week of October, is not exactly the peak of autumn, but there are yellow/red leaves already.I would suggest to go the temple first, then, start the hike down. On the way down you can see the pavilion in the middle of a river and pretty bridges. This is 4 hours by bus from Seoul, so be prepared for the long travel time.

Naejangsan is one of the most beautiful place to admire colorful foliage in autumn in Korea. It has a long line trees that turn into yellow and red in autumn. You can take a bus (1,000krw) to near to the cable car station. Don't forget check in at the beautiful lake near there and take the cable car to admire the whole view Naejangsan.
The best time to admire foliage is on novembre

We visited on 28/10/2019 but only 30% of the leaves turn yellow n red. A bit disappointed, pls come at middle November I guess for the autumn peak foliage best views.
We followed Klook tours from Seoul to here (cheaper than train) then we took bus 171(every 30mins, 1000Won) from national park to Jeongeup-si, then change another bus (4900won) to Jeonju-si.
Don’t worry about the bus , many buses are there..
We overnight at Jeonju-si hanok village before departing for Busan the next day.
