Not the most amazing walk, but ok to try if in the area. Some ferns trees appears to be dying and the Giant Tree is half dead after a lightning strike.
Beware toilets in the area are in a very bad state! No place to buy food or water so make sure to bring your own.

Beautiful and unique area of cool climate rainforest with many spectacular ferns and trees. Signage could be better but we enjoyed finding our way around. A bit muddy and slippery after rain so wear appropriate footwear.

This walk is very beautiful in during the early morning hours as the morning sun breaks through the ferns.
Walk takes about 15 minutes and is free.

The Cathedral of Ferns is an area of wet forest a short distance beyond Mt Wilson village. The location is stunningly beautiful and tranquil, and is dominated by majestic stands of tree ferns and rainforest trees, some of which are true giants of the forest. Just as impressive are the masses of scrambling vines, some as thick as bloated Boa Constrictors. Not exactly sure why the place likened to a cathedral - though it definitely has an awe-inspiring quality and, for those so inclined, I can see how it could inspire a 'closer to God' kind of experience. The track can be overgrown in parts and can get squishy and slippery underfoot. Not sure if snakes are a hazard here but leeches certainly can be.

We weren't sure where the 'cathedral' was, I thought it would be a clearing of some sort, maybe we missed it but I think it's just the whole area of ferns. It's a very nice place overall, but honestly not that much to it, a small area. As for the Giant tree, the tree trunk is big itself, but the rest of tree is gone! Struck by lightning a few years ago. I advise to walk around the Campsite on the other side of the road (walk in the direction of Mt Irvine). Lots of fairy wrens hopping along the path in front of us, very cute.

Glorious natural area to revel in nature at its best. Easy short walk into these stunning giant tree ferns caps off the whole Mt Wilson experience. I’ve seen many of the gardens and loved them all but this time we took in Nooroo. Again a totally delightful experience. There are pit toilets in the camping area opposite the track into the Cathedral if needed. No cafe or restaurant in Mt Wilson so take a picnic to enjoy at the many picnic spots if refreshments wanted. Some of the open gardens offer Devonshire Tea in peak season.

This is always the best spot for a nice picnic and a spot for viewing autumn colours - it's become almost an annual ritual for us.
Definitely a worthwhile place to stop and have a picnic when you're up in Mt Wilson visiting the numerous gardens in the area.

An unspoilt area of damp Blue Mountains forest that is easily walked by most people. Although it is on the side of a hill the walking track is has gentle grades. There is also a park across the road where camping is legal, if you want to stay for a day or two. The park also has picnic tables and pit toilets.

This is a difficult attraction to rate. I could not decide whether to give it 4 dots or 5 dots.
The Cathedral of Ferns is located on the edge of the Cathedral Reserve Picnic Ground. It is basically a just 10 minute walk into the forest to a ferny glen. However, it is a very beautiful and relaxing walk.
Once you get into the forest it is just like being in a mini Jurassic Park. Although the Giant tree is only a few hundred feet into the walk, it was impossible to hear the large number of people in the picnic ground, or traffic on the road.
On returning to the picnic ground I guessed that many of the people there had come up from Sydney, or had driven from Katoomba or Leura on the other side of the Blue Mountains National Park. I am sure they all had multiple activities planned in the Mt Tomah - Mt Wilson area. I hope so, because I would not drive long distances just to take a short walk into a fern forest. There are so many options in the Blue Mountains.
But I would love to walk in a fern forest if I could team it up with a couple of other attractions. On this occasion, I also went to Windyridge Garden and had a stroll around
Mt Wilson village. This made the whole excursion well worthwhile.
In late April the gardens in this area are beautiful as the deciduous trees show their colours. Just a few kms down the road is the highly rated Blue Mountains Botanic Garden at Mt Tomah.
Finally, I decided to give this attraction 5 dots, because although I would not travel great distances to experience this alone, it makes a really good extra attraction. The Cathedral provides a good chance to enjoy nature with a minimum amount of effort. There is ample free parking in the picnic ground.
Trip Advisor readers will be glad to know that we were not troubled by raptors on our walk.

Lovely spot for a picnic or to just view the beautiful autumn colours.
This is our second trip here and it seems it's our biannual getaway spot for when we want to see the lovely autumn colours.
