We were due to spend two nights in LNP on an overland from Kruger to Vilanculos and booked into Sandalo and Nhampfule Camps for some wilderness camping but mostly this was just a way to drive from KNP to the coast. We knew we would not see much game after we crossed the border at Giryondo and that was true for the duration. Kudu, Steenbok, Buffalo, Zebra, Impala were the only things we really saw and the presence of large villages within the park is obviously to the detriment of the game. I heard a hyena during the night. The road from Giryondo to Mapai is passable in a 4x4 and signposted well enough but you'll want a SatNav with Tracks4Africa. It's rutted track for the first 20km and then sand, rocky track for the rest of it to Mapai.

On arrival at Sandalo, it was quickly apparent that there was no water for the loos and showers. We had water on board our car so could manage but took the decision to cancel our second night and drive to Vilanculos in one go (about 12 hours). We stopped at Nhampfule to use the facilities but whilst they had water, the loos were full of dead and alive wasps (about 400 in each bowl) - we left quickly.

The overall impression is that the park has massive potential but the difficult decision would have to be taken to relocate the people living within it in tandem with bringing in more game. The road network doesn't allow for game drives like Kruger as there are few "loops" and you won't see much anyway and both campsites we visited were no better than just camping in the bush apart from having somewhere to make a fire.

People looking for adventure and who think that Kruger is too busy (we're the first but not the latter) will enjoy the fact that you won't see any other tourists but obviously you will see local people in and around the villages. However, until the Moz government commit to turning this park into a proper destination, it should be viewed as just an interesting transit route - no regrets about going there though and seeing the Buffalo was promising!

I would not recommend this route. The roads are badly corrugated, and entry to the park is expensive. R225 per vehicle, R225 per trailer, R150 per person, plus compulsory overnight camping fee of R150 per person. To utilize the route you are required to pay for camping in either the Kruger or Limpopo Parks although you do not actually have to stay in either park. There is some game to be seen on the section of road close to the border of the Kruger, but the larger area of the park, especially the area surrounding Massingir dam is settled by subsistence farmers and their requisite villages, cattle, maize and peanut plots.
The road between Chokwe and Macia is very badly potholed.
From Phalaborwa, this route is no faster than that via Komatipoort and the Maputo ring road to Xai-Xai, and the latter road is tarred and in good condition (with the exception of the short detour to access the Maputo ring road).

Desolate with no 1 animal sighting. Roads poorly maintained and no signage. Avoid this park unless you are in transit! Very disappointing to say the least.

There is no doubting the Mozambican friendliness. The border was a breeze and by just showing a bit of courtesy by greeting them in Portuguese, they are even more friendly and helpful. The road for 40km or so after the border post toward Massingir is still a bit rough, but hey, isn't that why we buy 4x4's? ;) We got to see a bit of animals and the changing scenery was worth the drive.

Auf dem Weg zur Küste war dieser Weg der Beste, allerdings waren kaum Tiere zu sehen, da sie ja alle bei dem Bürgerkrieg abgeschlachtet wurden.

We travelled through this park from Mozambique to the KNP in January, this is the second time we've done the trip, and I think there are more people settled in the park than the last time we went there!! If Moz (and the people living in and around the park) want to see the benefits from tourism, they need to look next door at the Kruger, and start with relocating everyone - and their livestock. You can't have both, unfortunately. I was really hoping for more game and less people as it's been a few years since my first trip. It's going to continue to be used as a shortcut route only, unless you make it worth staying in. The offices at the park gate at Massingir aren't even used anymore for tourists, who have to stand on the side of the road and fill in paperwork and pay fees - on an old second hand desk. Really disappointing. It's definitely gone backwards.

Pistes en bon état mais les animaux préfèrent visiblement rester dans le kruger. Le poste frontière de Giriyondo est plus accueillant que celui de Komatipoort
