What a lovely experience. So unexpected. An amazing historical setting where you can get to see a Victorian winding wheel in operation every 3rd Sat of a month - call ahead to check it’s taking place as run by volunteers.

Alan (ex miner) was our volunteer for the demonstration. Alan’s knowledge of the site, the machinery and the wider history of the Welsh coal fields was incredible.

There are two other exhibition spaces on-site providing other perspectives of the local area and people.

A small cafe provides a selection of cakes and drinks.

Visited today with my father, an ex collier who grew up in the surrounding streets. Guided by a local volunteer who had detailed knowledge of the winding engine and was happy to spend time sharing anecdotes with my father. As a mining rookie, I found the visit very informative and there was enough to read that I could leave the two old miners together and learn at my own pace!
We then had a fine freshly ground coffee in the cafe before cycling down the valley to Pengam on Cycle Route 468.

We visited on a Saturday when they ran the engine for 10 minutes. They now do this using compressed air rather than steam. It was incredible to see the engine running as it is over 130 years old (it was installed in 189). There are a number of days throughout the year where they run the engine.

The volunteers were very passionate and Alan was very knowledgeable about the mines in the area and answered lots of questions and had a chat with all the guests.

There's also a coffee and gift shop on-site.

Great piece of industrial history and not to be missed if you are interested in Welsh and British industrial history, especially the coal mines.

The Winding House, Elliot’s Pit, Tredegar, South Wales.

A small museum/art gallery packed with information & history from Roman times, through World War II & into the 1990’s.

The winding wheel is a marvel of Victorian engineering. (The last Saturday in every month sees the wheel in motion).

Admission free. Staff pleasant, polite & helpful. “Alan” (20 years a collier) a volunteer guide is very approachable & packed with pit knowledge, facts & figures.

Comfortable & airy cafe serving hot beverages, cakes, biscuits etc.

There is a small but well stocked shop selling books, trinkets & pit paraphernalia.

The museum, shop & cafe is pushchair & wheelchair friendly though not the winding house proper.

Toilets are on the first storey via a staircase. Unsure if there is a lift.

If in the area this venue is worth a visit. Recommended.

We visited here today. Our father starting working down Elliot’s pit when he was 14. My father and mother both came from Philipstown. It was amazing to see the exhibits and learn about the history of the pit. We spoke to Alan Lancaster, one of the volunteers helping there. It was astonishing that he new of our family and realising that our father must have worked there together. He was incredibly knowledgeable. We actually learned a lot of family history. I would urge anyone in the area to visit this really interesting museum.

A local museum based on the site of a former pit. Great photos and explanation if the history from Roman times through to the 90's and the closure of the last pits. By chance we met a volunteer who actually worked down the pit and knew his history well. It made the story come to life. Looking forward to going back on the last Saturday of the month to see the wheel turning. Free to enter but left a donation and brought a gift.

Great little trip out. For a free museum there was plenty to do and we really appreciated the multisensory activities. It would be nice to see more of the local history artefact finds on display however.

The volunteer who talked to us in the engine room was incredibly interesting and was very knowledgeable, adding personal anecdotes from his mining experience.

I had a fantastic experience at the Winding House. Both my great grandparents worked at Elliot Colliery and the staff members at the Winding House were awesome in giving me a private tour of the winding wheel. Alan Lancaster showed me all around the venue and was extremely knowledgeable about the colliery and the general area. I would highly recommend a visit to the winding house.

Went to the Winding House recently to see where my grandfather had worked in the early 20th century. Spent a very interesting couple of hours and got lots of useful information from Steve and Fran.
We were also lucky to meet Alan, an ex miner, who was able to give us lots of detail about working conditions and the workings of the engine.
I would thoroughly recommend a visit to the museum and the tea, coffee and cake was also good

Went to see the winding machine running yesterday. It is very impressive. The storyboards also provide an insight into the former colliery and others.
Particularly rewarding is the availability of knowledgeable volunteers who have answers to almost any question you may have, no matter how obscure.
We also took a look at the art exhibition and the permanent exhibits, all excellent. The cafe also provided us with delicious refreshments.
