Once 1st Australian Task Force military base (1ATF Base), including Luscombe Airfield, this was home to the Australian military during the Vietnam War.
There are still remnants of the runway in the town, and the hill that is Nui Dat looks as it does in the period photos.
If you have an interest in Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War in the 60s and 70s I think this has to be included with Long Tan in any trip. I had a guide for my trip which made it far easier to get around Long Tan, Vung Tau, Long Phuoc and Nui Dat all from HCMC.
Make sure to have a look at the Long Phuoc Commune Kindergarten, originally started as a way for the Vietnam Vets to help the local children.
For a better understanding of the history of the base and the Vietnam War I suggest starting with the Australian War Memorial, being home to an excellent collection of Australian military history.

We live fairly close to this historical site and have passed by innumerable times; unfortunately there is no signage indicating its location much less a plaque describing its significance. It is a beautiful location. The airfield is easily recognizable as is the pond but there does not appear to be a designated roadway to the hill. I will return on a future visit to explore the area in more detail.

Dear Robert Thank you very much for your kind comment after your trip to visit there. It is still the most expected destination for most Australians and families. Indeed, the Vietnam war has ended so long ago, but these trips will help both sides, countries heal the wounds and help us understand each other better. Whenever you have the opportunity to invite you back and I am looking forward to serve you again. Your kind regards

One of my sons and his family and I met up in Vietnam for a tour of the country, which they had not been to before. We covered more than 2,000 km, from Hanoi, to Hue, Danang, Hoi An, Nha Trang and Saigon.

They kept pressing me to see where I had served with the Australian Army during the American-Vietnam War in 1968-69 and again in 1970-71, so from Saigon I organised a mini bus to take us to Nui Dat, the home of some 5,000 Australian soldiers of the 1st Australian Task Force.

There is little evidence now that Australians were ever here, apart from the remains of the Luscombe Airfield laid down by Royal Australian Engineers.

Even Nui Dat has been cut in half. Nui Dat means dirt hill, and before the war it was a quarry. After Australia withdrew from the war, quarrying continued until the Vietnamese government realised it was of tourist significance to Australians and halted quarrying.

It was a nostalgic trip.

Dear Mr. David I knew that your son and his family had a meaningful trip to Nui Dat - The old base of Australian during the year of 1961 - 1971 The history of the mountain base has receded more than 50 years (half a century) and was delighted to say that this was a nostalgic tour for him and his family Vietnam is now developing and the development is taking a lot of things, including Nui Dat relic. But the history is still there. So when visit these palaces, I think need a local guide who has knowledge of history and experience that could help your son and his family will certainly understand more about this place. It is nice to see you and the others to visit this area. Thank you for his visiting. All the best

As a military history junkie, to stand on the site of 1ATF and try and conjure up images and activity is one of those moments in life you savour.

Looking up at SAS Hill and wondering...

Imagine 17/18 August 1966 the prelude to and day of the Battle of Long Tan. It was here!

There's a little shop on the side of the old runaway that's now a road selling stubble holders and beer. How could you not do both and toast all the men of 1ATF for their heroism and braves deeds.

Loved coming here and paying respects.

If you're thinking of visiting, Water Buffalo Private Tours out of Saigon are fantastic (see my separate review).

Former AUS Task Force base at Nui Dat and for those who know their history, the Nui Dat hill really stands out on the approach. Suggest you go online and obtain maps and 1960-70's photos so you can compare the lay of the land, so as you walked the ground you could see how that area looked over 50 years ago during the war when occupied by the AUS/NZ army. One of the perimeter roads uses the former main air strip. I was surprised by how large a surface area the base occupied.

We came here as my father in law was here with 85 transport company. It was quite a solemn experience for my husband although there is not much to see here imagining what these soilders went through was truly moving. Highly recommend this for families of those men who served our country!

Whilst not a lot left to see, to see and understand the hot and awful conditions experienced by the Australian troops stationed here in the war is very emotional.

It is a blast from the past for veterans who were stationed here during the war years.
There are no real remnants left these days, been picked up by locals and a NZ guy who runs a small self funded museum called "Diggers Rest" not far from Nui Dat.
SAS hill is still there of course and also the rubber trees.
