We visited the canal and tunnel with our 3&5 year old boys and had a brilliant time. My husband lived close by growing up and couldn't wait to go back!
Parking is by the railway station, we dint realise until after (although it is well signposted!) But parked on the road close by for free. You could get a free boat to the tunnel and visitor centre but we chose to walk (less than 10 mins with the children) which we enjoyed.
Grabbed a lovely coffee at the café and boarded the tunnel boat which we had booked online. Our guide ( I think his name was Stuart?!) Was excellent, an informative and humourous tour in the tunnel and he was brilliant with the children on board. It was really interesting to learn about the history of the tunnel. I was a bit nervous about how the children (and me!) Would feel about being in a a dark underground tunnel but it was absolutely fine! The boat is well lit and the guide and driver very reassuring making sure everyone is happy and even said they will turn straight back if anyone needed to which I thought was really nice.
When we finished the tour we headed to the play area by the visitor centre which seems brand new, very clean, tidy and safe for children to play, stuff for little and big kids and my husband and I got to enjoy a game on the giant connect four.
We just did the morning hut could have easily stayed much longer. Really good value for money day out for adults and children.
Thanks for a lovely time!

Thanks Hannah for this extensive review!
We are so happy that you enjoyed your time here with us at Standedge Tunnel. We pride ourselves on going the extra mile and its certainly thrilling when we hear of our volunteers sharing the love for the tunnel. Our playboat (AKA The Marsden Duck) is a new edition to our little slice of the Pennines. Its certainly proving popular!

Extremely friendly cafe with bags of character & good coffee; canal boat ride, train ride from and back to Huddersfield Station ( joy in itself) , what more for two small boys with their Mum & Dad and their grandparents on a rainy day. Nature reserve ( saw an adult deer ) play ground for the kids despite the rain. . A lovely two/three hours. Our eldest whose 3years old even sat in the drivers seat ( when stationary😂). He’s still talking about it at tea time.

Thanks Rob for your kind review!
We are so glad you enjoyed our little slice of happiness here in the Pennine Hills of Marsden. Its so pleasing to see our guests enjoying themselves. The deer are a new addition! Ok, they've been here for a while, our guests seem to be spotting them more and more in recent times.
Keep following our journey, more and more is in the pipeline to ensure each visit is different.

Hi Rubberman1074,
I'm sorry you didnt get the experience we expect at Standedge. Our main car park is located next to Marsden Railway Station (HD7 6DH). While we advertise this as best as we can, we struggle to update other websites. Our main attraction is then 15 minutes away down the towpath via a walk or a shuttle boat ride operated by the Huddersfield Canal Society.
Parking close by to the visitor centre is reserved for Disabled Guests and our Staff/Volunteers. We don't have any options for increasing car parking on site and encourage our guests to visit us using alternatives such as rail and bus.
We do hope you will try us again, follow our facebook page @standedge for all the latest events and information

A lovely sunny day today and the bank cowslips look fabulous. Another highlight is the sensory garden with children's play area, dipping pond and picniic benches. The raised beds are beautiful displaying a range of flowers and shrubs. Well done the team of volunteers, thankyou.

Thanks Harry!
Our sensory garden was the brainchild of our 'Friends of Standedge' volunteer team and was constructed last year. Its specifically designed with the senses in mind and there is a lot to explore. The team are very passionate about the beautification of Standedge Tunnel, I'm told there's more in the pipeline when it comes to flowers. Look out Eden Project!!

We had a wonderful morning here.
Parked at the National Trust car park, walked along the canal tow path, took around 15mins.
Wonderful boat trip through the tunnel with great running commentary.
Lovely cafe at the tunnel site, nice picnic area, then walked back to the car.

Went to the Santa workshop. Excellent value for money. Children and adults enjoyed the whole thing. The shuttle boat is great fun and well run by the volunteers. It’s a great afternoon out all year round. Lovely cafe on site and reasonably priced.

Interesting experience very knowledgeable guide and reasonably priced. Only downside is the trip only goes part way through but its far enough to experience what life must have been like both for the tunnel diggers and the people who used the tunnel when finished. Hope to return next year when they restart trips through the full length of the tunnel.

How close to the Diggle end of the tunnel can we moor our boat overnight, ready for a booked passage in the morning.

Sorry but can't answer this one as we were on the Marsden side of the tunnel. However I believe you can moor pretty close - but worth phoning the Trust bat Standedge - sure they can help.

We were looking to visit the tunnel is it clastrophobic inside the tunnel and iwith the short trip do you still get a good feel of what it was like
anyi information about the site etc would be helpful

I do not know about trips but feel that a short trip is the best if you have claustrophobia. It is over 3 miles long and has a low roof which was necessary to be able to propel a barge along the canal. You will see how this was done at the visitor centre.

Do u need to book in advance or can u just turn up

You can just turn up if you are going on the trip boat. If you are on a canal boat and want to go all the way through you need to book.

30 minute boat trips – the short one
If the full trip through the UK’s longest canal tunnel doesn’t float your boat – but you still fancy having a bit of a nose, you can still get on board with one of our short, 30 minute trips into the tunnel.
30 minute boat trip times Weekdays Weekends
11.00am
Running 19 to 26 February (half term) TBC 12.00 noon 12.00 noon
2 March to 28 October Friday - Monday 1.00pm 1.00pm
23 July to 3 September, seven days a week 2.00pm
Take a trip all the way through and explore deep into Standedge Tunnel. The journey lasts two hours and will give you a real in-depth insight into the history of our 200-year old tunnel. There are two trips on each of the through trip open days. See dates and times below.
For the morning trip a taxi will bring you back from Diggle. In the afternoon, the taxi will take you to Diggle before your trip.
And please remember to wrap up warm as the tunnel remains a cool temperature all year round.
Please note: through trips are not suitable for under 8s.
