My mind is still spinning from this reality bending experience. This place is literally a portal into another dimension! Mr Greisinger has created an incredible and unforgettable museum experience for the hardcore Tolkien fandom. He is incredibly funny and well read - he has dedicated much of his life and fortune to this incredible place and the world is much the better for it! He is funny and his deadpan "I hate English" schtick is returned to over and over during his incredibly well researched three hour lecture on Tolkien's influences in Germanic folklore. Some people complain that Lord of The Rings is too long - but they are not true fans! This tour is amazing and the only reason anyone has complained is out of jealousy or impatience. Mr Greisinger has done an amazing and wonderful thing by creating this museum and opening it to the public, when most of the artifacts contained in this museum would sit in private collections. This is a Mecca for Tolkien heads and I am very privileged to have been able to visit in person. I advise booking a hotel nearby because you will not want to leave! Mr Greisinger is incredibly friendly and fun to be around, and I hope to visit again next year. Best experience of 2023.

Made a TripAdvisor account for this — to generally echo the experiences of Guide05243299455, Ali B, Picky Traveler, and Trelawney G, here's the good news: The entrance to the museum is a very beautiful little hobbit hole, and some of the rarer artworks and book editions were astonishing to see (first editions of The Hobbit with hand-drawn cover art and handwritten dedications by Tolkien to his wife or his assistant).

Okay so here's the bad.

Firstly, the museum has no accessibility consideration — if you can't stand for long periods or need a mobility device of any kind, we recommend you skip it. There are many very narrow hallways and staircases without guardrails, and there is no wheelchair access. The tour starts with a five hour lecture standing in the entrance about the historical context of Tolkien's books. Our party of four took a seat after about an hour as one of us was on crutches, and there were just enough seats for us, so those traveling with a larger party will need to plan for this. Our tour guide, president of the museum Bert Greisinger, was a little short with us about needing to sit, but we think he was trying to be funny.

Greisinger continued to try to be funny for the next four hours, where some admittedly very interesting information about the books was shared in a gratingly condescending way. He repeatedly belittled members of our party for our lack of encyclopedic reference about the books, our education, our language (we took the English tour as our party speaks English and French, which Greisinger made sure to repeatedly inform us were terrible languages we ought to be embarrassed to speak), and even for not knowing beforehand details of some 10th and 11th century politics and battles. Candidly, this was about 30 minutes of information that was distributed over a half-day due to a clunky seminar sort of presentation — Greisinger would ask a question and wait through a painful amount of silence before demanding an answer, and would then be snide with us about invariably being incorrect, and this repeated ad nauseam for five hours total from our arrival.

When we were finally led out of the entrance into the next room of the hobbit hole, which is not part of the museum proper, Greisinger continued his rude little trivia game with some cheap replica memorabilia for another thirty minutes. The time on our tickets was marked from 10:10 to 14:40, so when we realized it was now 15:00 and the tour had not started in earnest, we informed him that we actually would need to be leaving soon to catch our train back to the town we were staying in. Greisinger scolded us that this was unacceptable and when we insisted that we had no other way to travel, he shifted his demeanor from a general haughty disdain to an impatient acrimony for the remainder of the tour. It's totally possible that the bad temper and unkind jokes were artifacts of cultural exchange, but it became truly exasperating over the course of the six hour day.

We were subsequently rushed through many narrow hallways and angrily chided for having a deadline and for standing too near some original paintings along the way, which would've been a more understandable grievance if the hallways weren't so cramped.

Mostly, the collection is frankly unimpressive. It generally feels less archival and historically resonant than a swollen merchandise section to any suburban hobby shop. The annotated movie scripts and rare book editions were easily the most compelling parts, but these were given disproportionately small focus relative to the action figures — the book editions were tucked away in a marginal railing and that movie script was stuffed away in a drawer. Greisinger seemed to believe the value proposition of any of the items in the gallery was its price, and emphatically shared the cost of nearly every item with us.

The rooms of the museum are roughly themed, badly lit and filled with large Rainforest Cafe-esque models of monsters from the Lord of the Rings movies. Greisinger made sure to explain at every available juncture that the movies were unimportant and inaccurate, which felt confused on his part — why fill a space with a 10 meter statue of Treebeard just to explain that it's wrong?

Lastly, the tour exits through what seems to be Greisinger's personal garage, which is jarring at best, and walking past garage cruft and piles of boxed movie merchandise made us cringe and obliterated any semblance of immersion or delight we may have incidentally discovered along the way.

Our take is that the ,,museum” could benefit from professional curation, professional tours, and an interior design pass. Aside from the aforementioned notable items, the collection is primarily kitsch and hobbyist memorabilia, and could be pared down by about 80%, focusing far less on the Funko Pop-adjacent pieces. The layout of the gallery is whimsical but very stream-of-consciousness in its design, and could very much stand some intention and information architecture. The haunted-house style decorations to the rooms cheapens the experience further, and ought to be reconsidered. Finally, Greisinger should refrain from giving tours: his passion for the subject matter is evident and admirable, but he has given no critical thought to usefully dispelling the information in a tour format, and poisoned what could've been a moderately enjoyable experience.

Until these improvements are made, we would not recommend Greisinger's quaint collection, and certainly not for the 50 CHF entry price.

My friends and I visited the museum on a warm autumn day. As many other reviews have mentioned, the introduction took place during two+ hours in the entrance to the museum (we had the short tour), with only a couple of seats and no air circulation. The information provided was interesting stuff, but framed rather problematically. There was no critical engagement with the material or sources for any of the inputs given. The collection was surely impressive and worth a look - but a well structured and more inclusive tour was missing. Sexist, racist, homophobic and transphobic comments were made, and any minor objections from guests were disregarded. In addition, we were often reminded of how badly educated and ill-prepared we were (as others have suggested, not sure if this was a joke or not, but the repetition of these utterances suggest they were not). A good chunk of time was spent talking about how Hollywood and Peter Jackson made “mistakes” (i.e. took creative freedom) in the movies compared to the books. Such a purist take on Tolkien’s material accompanied us throughout the entire tour. It’s a shame that the tour was not handled with more care and reflection, because much of the information given was fascinating, and the collectibles, paintings and carefully and lovingly conceptualised rooms were great to see.

My experience mirrors the the earlier reviews given Picky Traveler, Trelawney G, and Sabrina who have already said everything I felt in detail.

The museum is an interesting sight in itself and has some unique objects, but the initial excitement of entering the Hobbit hole was quickly quenched by the 3 hour lecture in the cloakroom which left everyone rather tired and worn down before even entering the museum proper. Even for hardcore fans you will likely find that many of the 'facts' thrown at you in the lecture are debatable at best and outright fabrications/misunderstandings at worst.

I can only recommenced this for the shortest time slots (and if they could offer just 1.5 hours that would be even better).

Extensive and fabulous collection of Middle Earth! We booked the short tour (which already comprises 3.5 hrs), which eventually lasted 5.5 hrs - so come prepared! Worth every minute though, as for you're time you're going to get a lot of interesting background information on how historically and linguistically Middle Earth (and the entire LotR and Silmarillion) came to be. This is followed by a visually stunning and impressive journey through the museum, were Mr. Greisinger will eloquently guide and entertain you throught.
