This is the first death camp in Poland and was a mobile camp where Jews were gassed in trucks as they were driven to a forest for incineration and burial.

Because the Nazis destroyed the camp when the Soviets were approaching, there is little of the infrastructure that remains to be seen when compared to Auschwitz, so this wouldn’t be the best choice of a camp as an introductory camp. Plus it’s also not easy to visit on public transportation— it’s about 2 hours from Warsaw.

There is a new museum on the site of the camp which while small has good exhibits in Polish, English and Hebrew. Also, next to the ruined granary there are poignant accounts left by the tailors, jewelers snd cobblers who had to repair clothing removed from victims and make or mend officers uniforms. They each wrote their names and thoughts when they knew they were going to die and begged the reader to let their families know of their fate and many asked for vengeance against the Germans.

I spent about two hours there and a little less than an hour in the forest clearing. I was glad I had a guide (who accompanied me from Warsaw) for that part of the visit as there aren’t any local guides. In fact, I was the only visitor snd the staff were surprised that there was a visitor.

Chełmno doesn't have that much to look at, but, if you already know something about its historical significance, then you can certainly get a better sense of the scale and spatial layout of the operation by going there yourself and you will probably pick up some new information as well.
The museum in the village of Chełmno nad Nerem has a contemporary, comprehensive exhibition with all texts in Polish, English and Hebrew. Visitors should go to the museum first and then to the forest site. Some maps show a museum building at the forest site, too, but that building is only the educational pavilion for special groups and is not generally open. At the museum, which is free, I bought for 10 PLN a booklet that explains all the spots marked out at the forest site. There is very little signage in the forest, so I would have been a bit lost without the booklet.
Another reason to visit the museum is that a large portion of the history of the camp took place in the village and not in the forest. During the first phase of the camp, most victims were processed at the manor house, whose foundations are on the museum grounds, were killed in gas vans waiting outside and were taken to the forest for burial. During or at least at the end of the second phase, work prisoners were kept in the granary beside the manor house. The granary has been partially reconstructed and is accessible. The cement floor on which the prisoners slept and the walls are--I presume--original, although the roof was set on fire during the liquidation of the camp, when the prisoners mutinied.
Now, if you want to visit the museum and the forest site, but you have no car, then then making the trip means dealing with some logistical inconvenience. There actually is a bus from Koło to Chełmno nad Nerem that runs in the morning and returns in the early evening, stopping both ways at the forest site, if desired--but only on school days. Since I was here in the summer, I hired a taxi ta take me from Koło to the village, and I walked the 16 km back to Koło, stopping at the forest site on the way. Of course, if you don't mind splurging, you could have the Koło taxi ferry you all around, but planning to do the legwork is perfectly reasonable if the weather is OK, since you only have to walk on country paths and quiet village roads. I left Koło by taxi at 09:00 and returned by foot at 18:30, having moved all day at a very leisurely pace

Have been to Poland often enough over the past 30 years but never got around to visiting this death camp site. Like Treblinka and Sobibor the Nazis managed to destroy most of this camp before pulling back into Germany. The work to salvage what little was left is a fairly recent endeavor. European Union support? Getting there by public transportation is next time impossible. I took a train from Warsaw to Kolo and from the station managed to call a taxi which took me to Chelmno and returned later to pick me up. It was raining and muddy so I didn't go to the forest where victims' bodies were buried. A very long walk from the site of the camp. A large monument has been erected in that forest. There is a small museum on the former camp's grounds. Well-done but in need expansion. An employee assured me there is already additional exhibition space being prepared. No charge for entrance. Most but not all exhibits and memorial stones are in English and Hebrew as well as Polish. This was quite a long trek for me but I do not regret the effort. The least I can do to respect the memory of those who were brutally gassed in vehicles or shot in the head.
