An interesting museum and an excellent guide who took us around to explain the exhibits. The museum and tour covers pre-1914 Europe and the empires, pre-war Ireland and home rule crisis, events leading up to the war, recruitment and naivety of those enlisting, then the horrors of trench warfare. The Battle of the Somme is the main focus and loss of Irish volunteers. There are good displays, objects from the war, mock trenches and dugouts. Opening days are limited at present (Wednesdays and first Saturday of month). I am surprised that so few seem to know about this museum. Needs better publicity locally.

First of all would like to say I’m reviewing
Management and staff not the museum !
We drove from Belfast to be told at the door by a very disinterested lady that the place was closed and preceded to close the door .
.
We said we phoned and kept getting the answer machine to ask us to leave a message . No details of the closure on the machine message .how this simply could be checked every morning if staff took the time .
When I emailed the museum to complain
They simply said there must have been an electric short and the message was wiped . And the closure is stated on the website .my I add a lot of people especially of a age don’t do web sites .
So the management need to address staffing issues . And public relations.

Visited here with my 12 yr old daughter, 8 yr old son and my parents. Our guide Austin was lovely. Kids enjoyed getting made recruits for the army and dressing up. My kids loved the trenches part as we learned how hard it was in WW1 & watched a very moving video with quotes from soldiers. Only complaint I have is the tour was very quick & we couldn’t get to read and see all the information properly. I know tours are every hour but would have been nice to have more time to take in the information but I’m one of those people who like to read everything!

Off the main Bangor to Newtownards dual carriageway, the museum is situated in an old quarry, next to a park. When I visited there were very few people there.
Tours apparently start on the hour, so I missed that part.
Museum had quite a lot of medals and memorabilia mainly from World War 1. It tells the story of Irish forces in the war with an emphasis on County Down.
Interesting place to spend an hour or so.
Car parking and disabled access available. Entrance fee is reasonable.

This place doesn't seem to advertised much so it's a real hidden gem. years ago id been to a formal dinner here after a tour, but it was good to go back and see the place again. Theres so much information here about the Somme, and what our very brave boys did in the war. I was truly humbled!

They offer a guided tour that is the only way to go. Takes you through the history of the Irish in World War 1 with excellent dioramas mimicking trenches, complete with movie clips and sound effects. Displays of uniforms and equipment as well as living conditions. The word needs to get out about this place.

Have been to the some centre on many occasions, have taken BB groups etc to it as well, it is a place of historical value with hundreds upon hundreds of items of relevance, the staff are great with groups and especially children, well worth a day out during school holidays etc

The centre is an essential educational resource which should be visited by all to recognise the sacrifice made by the people across the island of Ireland on the battlefields of France a century ago. Some much information in the centre and the guide was so knowledgeable. This time in our history should never be forgotten.

They hold guided tours on the hour every hour between 10am and 3pm during opening hours. These are interactive educational tours, Our guides have learned great knowledge of the First World War and in particular the Battle of the Somme and of the role Ireland played in it, as well as the history of the Home Rule Crises and history of Women in the War. For tours, visitors are advised to book in advance. Contact the Somme Museum for more information.

From Belfast best option is bus or train to bangor and then taxi out to the centre. In fairness it lies between Newtownards and bangor so not on any public transport route from Belfast. Hope this helps

You should really contact the centre direct. The staff are very helpful and I'm sure they would arrange an interesting visit for you and your class.
