The museum was built by the industrialist and philanthropist William Lever, 1st Viscount Leverhulme (who founded Sunlight Soap and Unilever) and opened in 1922. It is in an imposing building set in the beautiful garden village of Port Sunlight, which is one of the little hidden gems of the Wirral and well worth visiting in its own right. The collection is a manageable size and can be viewed within a couple of hours. Its free apart from occasional special exhibitions.
Avoid Mondays, but otherwise it's open every day from 10-4 and leave time for a visit to the cafe with delicious cakes.

Regular visitors to Lady Lever, we booked to go to see the Boodles Exhibition.
It was interesting, varied in the media used and informative but it did feel as if something was lacking.
It is hard to explain what but perhaps it was the fact that (probably for security reasons), some of the exhibits were in small displays and it was not always easy to see the jewellery on display. Also, with little use of coloured background, some of the exhibits did not show up so well - perhaps dark backgrounds for some of the jewellery would have illustrated their beauty better.
We are glad we went and enjoyed what we saw but we were surpried that the exhibition was rather "flat" in it's presentation.

My second visit this week this time with my beautiful wife Evie , last time last Saturday with my darling daughter Shirley
It was Shirleys first experience of Art and her Dads passion aged 19 months
The museum is a wonderful experience and has numerous wonderful works , especially from the PRB and including William Holman Hunts masterpiece The Scapegoat
Lady Lever had a fine eye for classical art and there are numerous Romney,s , Gainsborough’s, Gabriel Dante Rossetti and John Everitt Millais
Situation at the end of a beautiful promenade of property and Gardens at The Port Sunlight Model Village the Neo Classical museum is masterpiece itself
A magical place to loose your thoughts amongst such beauty and a attractive and accommodating cafe in the basement. The counter incorporates the cast iron range from the original kitchen
Since I moved to the beautiful city of Chester I count myself as extremely lucky to be able to have such a beautiful museum a short distance from home
Highly recommend

Beautiful museum with wonderful pieces of art featured throughout... the museum was located in the picturesque Port Sunlight.
We thoroughly enjoyed the museum however upon entering the museum shop we found the assistant to be quite rude to a previous customer and very snippy with us. Not sure what we did to deserve that but otherwise can’t fault the museum. I would like to say the young lady at the front of the museum was very helpful and attentive.

What a great gallery in a great town. A lovely building with a range of sometimes eclectic art and collections. The work is we displayed with Just enough information to inform but not ovèrwhelm. Enjoyed the various Lever collecting obsessions of anything Wedgewood and anything Napoleon! Even the basement cafe has some tasteful artistic touches.

Beautiful collection of over 20000 pieces. Incredible variety. Stunning building. Very friendly informative staff.
The Boodles exhibition is very special- 3 rooms of exquisite jewellery. Staff on hand to answer any questions. A must for any diamond lover.
Easy to get to from Liverpool. We choose to jump on the train and then a short walk to the museum.

This gallery is just amazing and holds some really popular artwork so it is a great place to visit ....as you will recognise a lot of the paintings! Very interesting room about the history of Port Sunlight and the gallery. The building itself is just gorgeous and is a fantastic place to come to if you are visiting the beautiful Port Sunlight or just a specific visit to the gallery. Everyone we take here just falls in love with it - it's amazing.

Opened in 1922 this amazing gallery was the work of the industrialist and philanthropist William Lever, 1st Viscount Leverhulme. The museum is dedicated to his wife but its many splendid treasures are free to the public to see. There are important collections of English furniture, Wedgwood, especially jasperware, and Chinese ceramics, and smaller groups of other types of objects, such as Ancient Greek vases and Roman sculpture.
There are paintings by Reynolds, Stubbs and Turner but my personal choices would be the Pre-Raphaelite collection. There is also an outstanding collection from Wedgewood which has to be seen.
When you enter you will be provided with a map of the lay out but it is easy to find your way around. Downstairs is a cafe and a shop and the parking is directly outside and free as well.

This gallery is amazing to visit as there is so much to see and each room is different from the other. We really enjoyed our visit and we highly recommend visiting this gallery as you can see some amazing sculptures, very nice paintings, splendid furniture, nice-looking pottery or wonderful Chinese artefacts.

A great place to visit in the picturesque village of Port Sunlight. Delightful to walk around this interesting building that is full of incredible exhibits. Great to see so many well behaved children exploring the building and learning, sad to see a teenager more interested in his phone!
Make sure that you pick up a site plan from reception, its a bit of a rabbit warren.

Liverpool, UK
Yes definitely! We have Activity Rooms with colouring, story books and dressing up clothes as well as regular events for preschoolers. We are reopening newly restored galleries on Friday this week where the collections have been represented too with some objects deliberately placed at a child's eye height.

Is it accessible to wheelchairs?
National Museums Liverpool
Liverpool, UK
Hello Sue, I can confirm we are fully accessible via ramps and a lift between floors. We can also loan wheelchairs on request & will happily accommodate special requirements where possible with some notice. There is ample parking outside the main entrance also.
We do have some building work taking place at the moment so you may want to call in advance if there's something specific you'd like to see as not every room will be open until late spring

Are there any special exhibitions on at present?
National Museums Liverpool
Liverpool, UK
Hello Hilary.
We have a lovely exhibition on at the moment called Picturing Venice. It features works by artists including JMW Turner, Walter Sickert and Frank Brangwyn, and explores the influence of Venice on British art and culture.
The exhibition also presents a selection of photographs of the ‘City of Water’ taken by pioneering photographer Carlo Ponti, who moved to Venice in 1852 and opened a shop selling photographic souvenirs to tourists.
We are open daily from 10am to 5pm and the exhibition is open until 27 September 2015
