The building itself is quite stunning and completely at odds with the residential streets surrounding it. Together with Tripadvisor reviews, it led us to believe that there was more than was really offered inside.
A whole gallery was closed and undergoing decoration.
There were some interesting exhibitions focussing on local life, although the walls the photos and paintings were hung on were badly in need of some love. Beige/cream walls rarely show off whatever’s hung on them effectively.
We were told by one of the staff that an exhibition (advertised as opening back in August) was still in the process of being set up. Really? At the end of September? Whilst some of the bits and pieces in it were quite striking, the whole thing came across as a rather pretentious A Level student’s offering. Sorry.
The cafe looked good with some nice cakes on display but we didn’t stay as we were on en route to Liverpool. It looked to be well supported by locals. There was a largish car park to the side of the gallery which was helpful.
Overall I’m glad we popped in but it wouldn’t be worth a detour in my opinion.

I visited the gallery today and had the most enjoyable experience. Every staff member I met was kind, courteous and helpful to me as I use a powerchair. The food in the cafe was really truly delicious. Today the soup was Tomato and Basil (One of my favorites), I had that, a cup of tea and a scone and it was all truly delicious. The lady in the cafe brought my items over to the table and moved a chair out for me so I could position my chair nearer to the table. After having lunch I went around the gallery and museum and it was a very enjoyable experience. Looking at Lowry and his paintings and sketching's was beautiful. There is much to see and do here and I don't think you'll be unhappy with your visit. The disabled facilities were great. There is a ramp outside to the front of the building and then everything is all on one floor and very accessible. There are many activities for children which means that everyone can enjoy their time here. The gallery is open from Wed - Saturday so be prepared on which days to travel. I visited using the bus today but there is a good car park at the side. Walking up from Oxton Road or Borough Road isn't too taxing but if you do use the bus it's very easy to find.
The last time I visited the Williamson Art Gallery and Museum was before I became ill and disabled and so it's changed a lot but I wasn't disappointed with my visit today and I will certainly be back again in the future.

The Williamson gallery is situated across the River Mersey in Birkenhead.
It is around a mile on foot from Birkenhead Central station.
There is a diverse range of exhibits relating to the town’s maritime past as well as some excellent Della Robbia pottery from the late 19th/early 20th century.
Some great old photographs from the shipyards as well as models of the boats are on show.
I liked also the portraits of legendary local footballer Dixie Dean.
Unfortunately much of the permanent art collection was not available to view, but
I did enjoy the Going to the Match display which showcased LS Lowry’s iconic painting.
Admission is free but the gallery is closed on Monday and Tuesday.

Since it reopened after covid, it has become a beacon of light and hope in a cultural desert.
The exhibitions are diverse and fascinating. The new curator and the staff make each visit a joy. Please visit and see for yourself.
Even simple things like the toilets are a testament to how things can be, i.e. clean and functional. Above all else, you can feel that they are passionate about what they do. It is infused into the atmosphere of the building.
For a long time, it was a facility that could have been lost to Birkenhead and the Wirral. It has been transformed.

We went to see 2 exhibitions - Rob Davies and Space Remastered. We spent a really enjoyable couple of hours in the exhibitions. Rob Davies was not my cup of tea but I could see why others would like his work.
I wasn't expecting to enjoy the Space Remastered, as it is more myhusband's taste than mine but I really, really enjoyed that exhibition.
Just goes to show how important it is to go with an open mind, I suppose.
Really enjyed our stop in the cafe too and I bought some lovely "mystery" packs of postcards. We also saw the outside space/garden, which we had never known about before.
Add to that the really excellent local artist exhibition and, all-in-all, an excellent visit.

We firstly started with lunch, tasty soup and sandwich and Panini which got things off to a good start. The gallery itself is not huge but it does cover a number of different art styles and types. There is a good balance between the modern and more traditional. The highlights for me are those model ships and other maritime artifacts which highlight well the areas rich maritime history. There is also some impressive gothic furniture and two rooms of local provincial pottery including a number of items from Della Robbia Pottery. The car park is not particularly large so you may end up parking on the street. Entry is free!

It was before Covid that we visited, but it was a superb display of Della Robbia pottery. Also the model ships. Such an interesting selection in a small gallery.

This is definitely a hidden gem - it is small but perfectly formed! It also has a cafe and we noticed people just popping in for the cafe only. The shop is lovely too. The museum has lots of really interesting local information (we didn't realise Liverpool was so important for ceramics) and is just gorgeous. There is a massive room on ship building so I was trying to see if I could see a photo of my grandad in Cammell Laird's (no I din't spot him!). Highly recommended.

We visited the gallery/museum by chance as we decided to attend the Heritage Open Day event organised in September 2022. This place is fantastic!! We had a drink and a slice of cake which was very good and not too expensive before looking at the Lady Bird exhibition. This was an excellent exhibition going thought the years, it was nice to see how the books changed and adapted. We noticed that there were some comfortable places where children were enjoying themselves playing or reading some Lady Bird books. We had a guided tour/talk with the curator in the maritime part of the gallery/museum and it was very interesting to see the large number of ships and maritime items displayed. The other persons who attended the event were also very impressed to learn about a few objects which lead to some maritime disasters. We were also very impressed by the large collection of Della Robbia Pottery which were displayed and it was nice to have more information about this specific pottery. The curator was very friendly and knowledgeable about the museum and about Birkenhead and all staff (reception and café) were very nice too.

I visited the gallery yesterday with a group of friends to see the Ladybird book exhibition. We all loved the gallery and the exhibition was wonderful. The staff were very friendly and the other rooms were very interesting ,especially the Della Robia Pottery room.We did think that room would benefit from a more information about the items on display.Altogether a memorable experience.

It is always free to come in except when we have an evening event or a workshop where there are costs involved. We pride oursleves on keeping as much free as possible, but donations always welcomed to the charity that supports us, the Williamson & Priory Friends
