Partly managed by Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, this is somewhere we've not been for years and what a difference.

Access down Mill Lane has always been ropey. There is no parking as such. You leave your car on the rough track, but now housing is encroaching and parking is even more difficult. The houses are backing directly onto the DWT site, making it noisy and in time there will be more people, dogs, cats and children which will all detract from the once peaceful and beautiful site. There is a public footpath through here as well.

However we were speaking to locals about the lack of birds such as Yellowhammer which we used to see, and were directed across the railway bridge - here it's another world. There is a main track leading from Hagg hill through this section where there are a few seats as well, or you can turn off and take a walk through the woods by the River Rother. Here you can find peace and quiet in spite of the railway, and birds and flowers. This bit is somewhere we would revisit.

Why when something that was such a scar on the surrounding area full of pollution, do people feel the need to litter, graffiti and damage it! Amazing how under educated people, probably in the main adults feel that this is the correct way to treat your back yard!

Let's not even discuss the volume of dog poo, both left in the middle of footpaths or kindly discarded in a single use plastic bag! Presumably they think it's actually someone's job to pick their crap up.......get educated or don't use the park, leave it to people who want to enjoy it.

This natural area of rough land used to be a sanctuary for wildlife, however it is now surrounded by new build housing - money talks.

Former coking plant railway sidings converted into wetlands. During our visit many snipe and teal were in view. Pleasant walks which are on good paths in most parts. Paths being extended and can now walk all the way to Chesterfield. Railway enthusiasts and ornithologists have both birds and close passing trains. Can walk safely off road for a few hours and take in the wildlife.

The Avenue refers to the old Avenue Coking plant of which this is the old railway sidings area which since the plant closed has been allowed to return to nature managed by the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust it has a wide range of habitats now and a good mix of species of insects, birds and mammals

Title says it all really; this tranquil washlands reserve is a little oasis and has been transformed over the years from waste land really. The newly opened country park that this empties into makes a great addition and you can walk for ages taking in the countryside.

This is a lovely setting but it now spoilt by graffiti and discarded beer cans. We have visited this reserve many times and always found it very pleasant but it must attract the wrong types in the evening.

What a shame the centre had to close and that building work is now going on close-by but this did not detract from our annual poddle around the place. I like to view from the hide & walk to the stream, even to go under the railway bridge and the other side around the small copse of trees. We think we heard a plop in the stream for what I dearly hope is a vole, since the 2007/8 floods, mink were brought down & decimated our Chesterfield canal population - I saw the mink but have never since water rats since their brief visit ravaged them..I do like this piece of tranquility so close to town - no conveniences though so make sure you go first...and take some sarnis - no tea rooms..

For those that don't know this nature reserve is one that took an overgrown, disused branch line to a long derelict coking plant complete with massive cooling towers (which are now a distant memory) and turned it into somewhere you can visit time and again.
Work here is always ongoing but unobtrusive, I visit walking my dogs several times a week and see plenty of evidence of hard work keeping pathways open but have yet to see who does it!
Lots of wildlife to see and lots of variety in plant life
No car park to service this reserve but plentiful free parking on nearby streets
Easy to turn this into a circular walk from bridge street to north side via the rugby club but due to styles not great for wheelchairs all the way around
