Fascinating garden which is a credit to its creator although I realise it was constructed as an escape from the deaths of her famous husband Brett and her equally talented daughter Arkie.
Certainly a unique experience.
A place of relaxation and solace.

We went hunting for this secret garden whilst the kids were at Luna Park.
And we’re glad we found it. It’s a quiet spot away from the noise and we’ll set out in the hill.
The planting was well laid out and this gardener was vey happy to have spent some time there.

It’s not really secret but that’s what it’s called; in fact, it’s won awards for the best garden maintained by residents and is easily found on various travel blogs. When I first read about it, the garden intrigued me because it’s built on a steep hillside overlooking the harbor and the bridge with a maze of paths bringing you from tiered level to tiered level through nooks, sculptures, and cul-de-sacs. But the backstory intrigued me even more: apparently Wendy and her husband Ben were enfant terribles of the art world in the 60’s/70’s; he was the artist and she was his wife and muse. He died at 53 and all the websites say she channeled her grief into building this garden and has kept it going for all these years, along with help from volunteers. Although there’s no sign for the garden, I turned right at the public toilets on the Walkway and climbed the steps from the harbor and the garden is on the right. It's not huge area-wise, but has so many paths, corners, cul-de-sacs, nooks & crannies that there's a lot to see (and it's a good workout!). Interesting to spot stray pieces of sculpture or old iron objects (e.g. sewing machine) among the greenery. Would definitely recommend this if you like gardens or are in the area

The park is small but it is a peaceful haven in the city of Sydney.
The vegetation is lush with works of art along the trail.
Very beautiful view of Lavender Bay.

We were at Milson’s Point at the market, so decided to wander over to the gardens. They are not marked so you need to follow the steps down all the way to the bottom.
I would NOT make a special trip for this garden-it is a lovely local spot but not worth a separate trip

We were staying very close to this place. How can do much quiet and greenery exist just seconds away from traffic & mayhem? Amazing place. Walk down and reach Peter Kingston walkway.
My husband and I walked till Kirribilli Mary Booth Lookout. What a view of the Harbour bridge & Opera house!!

We went on the ferry from Circular Quay to Milton Point (took 5 minutes) and walked to the left of Luna Park around the bay. when we reached the tunnel under the railway bridge we ascended some steps up into the garden. We were very surprised to encounter Wendy Whiteley herself watering the garden. We had a lovely chat with her about the garden and then explored the whole of this remarkable place. It is beautiful with lots of lovely shady areas to sit and enjoy the peace and quiet. Thank you so much Wendy for allowing us to share your fantastic Secret Garden.

This is my second visit to the garden. I had some spare time while in Sydney so I decided to revisit the garden. It is still as beautiful as I remembered. It was a hot day and the garden offered a beautiful shady retreat from the hot city. There are a number of places to just sit and admire your surroundings. It was lovely to see so many families with young children wandering around the garden. I walked upto Wendy's house and sat on one of the seats to enjoy the view of the Sydney Harbour bridge. I then walked along the path near the water that takes you past Luna Park and back to the bridge. I would recommend a visit to the garden when you are in Sydney. Easy to get to by either catching the ferry to Luna Park or walking across the bridge. If you have trouble with stairs you can use the lifts each end of the bridge.

Totally unexpected oasis. The Secret Garden is apparently an open secret to many people, but it was not known us us previously. The place is fantastic, serene paths meander around a sunken garden flanked by Sydney Harbour on one side and sandstaone cliffs on the other. A cool and quiet place to just relax and enjoy the lush green place. It is quite a hike down into it (and back Up) from the city above

We walked from The Rocks, across Harbour Bridge and through Lavender Bay to get to Wendy Whiteley's Secret Garden.
It was a lot larger than I was expecting with lots of nooks and crannies to walk up and through. Plenty of places to sit and enjoy the tranquillity in the middle of suburbia.
Very popular but not crowded.
I would recommend a trip here for some quiet time.

Hi, We are staying near to the Opera House later in the year. Would we be able to walk over the bridge to the gardens or is it too far? Also, are there any other places to visit near to the gardens?
Skrevet 26. september 2019
Yes, its a good walk over the bridge- probably take you 20- 30 minutes depending on what pace you're going at.
The other fun place just close by and especially if you have children with you in Luna Park. Wendy's Garden is surrounded by beautiful parks, and you could just sit in the grounds with a picnic and watch the sunset.
There's also a sweet modern Indian restaurant at the top of the garden which is open for dinner from 5 pm called Lavendra, which is at 5, Walker Street.

I would catch the train. A long walk from St Leonards.

Hi Karen - I don't know what the council regulations are but I did see several people with dogs on leads walking through, and past, the garden. Hope that helps, Kathy

There are plenty of cafes, restaurants and pubs within close walking distance in Milsons Point, McMahons Point and Kirribilli. If you visit the Wendys Secret Garden website you can find links to local eateries.
