I had read about the monument and knew I wanted to see it on our 9/19 visit. We were with a private tour guide so it was no problem taking a side trip to the monument. We were the only people there. Our guide had never been here. He enjoyed learning something new about his country and will make it a suggested stop for his clients.

This is a stunning sculpture full of beauty and respect made with deep gratitude for the Chocktaw people to commemorate their great act of kindness to the destitute people of Ireland during the Famine.

The story of this monument is well known. A Native American tribe donated a lot of money and supplies towards Irish famine relief in the 1840s, when told of the tragedy by Irish emigrants.
The feathered design of this monument is beautiful and appears delicate even when you see the structure close up. It is a pity that it is sited as low as it is, because passing traffic on the nearby Cork-Waterford can only catch a glimpse of it as it is partly hidden by trees.
Well worth your time getting off the road and finding the housing estate where it dominates the nearby green area.

Possibly the most exquisite, graceful sculpture I've ever seen, both in conception and appearance. The profound eloquence of these nine steel feathers match the haunting generosity which inspired them. The Choctaw people, raw from their own Trail of Tears, could yet collect sorely needed dollars to gift to a far-away, starving, people they would never meet. Suffering to suffering. One of the most seldom told, sacred exchanges in human history. Do visit, and touch those celestial feathers in renewed gratitude.

Had seen pictures of this monument, and read the stories about it - so of course I wanted to see it when we were travelling nearby. We have a Motorhome, added the coordinates to the sat nav, and off we went .... first route, we met a low lying bridge so detoured ..... next road brought us to it, with a sign for parking 200 m left .... only to be confronted with the low bridge without prior ⚠️ warning - necessitating a three point turn on a busy road, well more than 3, bollards on the path meant it was a tight turn 😲
A beautiful, meaningful sculpture- but no parking nearby just to stop and walk through the park area. Probably not in the best place for people to actually notice it .. which is a pity, it’s very unique and beautiful.

Fantastic craftsmanship, ( he feathers look so real) a free monument not to be missed, only 5 minutes from Jamieson Distillery if you are going there for a tour, I would recommend seeing this.

Well this was on out list to see,how unusual this is in where its at,tucked away in a small park in a little town,we kinda thought it might have been in Cork itself, but its about 20 minutes outside of the city,no close parking,no sign telling what it is. Still sad.

This sculpture, by Cork based Alex Pentek, is a very moving memorial to the kindness and generosity of the of the Choctaw nation who, in 1847, sent $170 to Ireland to ease the effects of the famine, just 13 years after their forced march and relocation from Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida, across mountains and snow to Oklahoma – both events lead to widespread disease and death. Millions of Irish people died from starvation and disease., and 2,500 Choctaw people were lost over three years.

The monument depicts nine eagle feathers, each 20 feet high, arranged in a circle reaching towards the sky, to represent a bowl filled with food as a sign of the tribe’s generosity - that $170 would be worth about $4,500 in today's money. The spectacular sculpture is placed right next to a main, near a waterway, and the park was covered with litter on the day we visited. So a very stylish commemoration of the Great Irish Famine of the 1840s in less than stylish surroundings!

Unusual, beautiful, poignant and respectful monument. Easy to find, well worth visiting . Best on a sunny day and the sun’s reflections on the monument makes it a photographer’s dream.
