Extremely disappointing to see turf cutting at this wonderful site. The worst of the cutting is right beside a board explaining how delicate and important the bog is and asking people to stay on the boardwalks to protect it. It is unsightly and so disrespectful.
The site itself is really done well. The information boards are great and it gives a great sense of the place and its history. Often in this country we give no value to our industrial heritage so it is brilliant that so much effort has been put in.
Get the turf cutting sorted and it would be a perfect visit.

Between 1906 and 1930, the Daily Mail newspaper in London, awarded numerous prizes for achievements in aviation.. The most famous prize was 10,000 Pounds given in 1919 to Alcock and Brown for the first non-stop transatlantic flight between North America and Ireland.

We enjoyed the 5km walk and appreciated both the peat bog and seeing the massive quantities of peat that had been cut and set out to dry. The information about Marconi’s wireless was well presented - my teen took some time to wrap his head around the fact that they used radio waves with large towers to communicate across the Atlantic. The path was easy to follow and scenery was beautiful.
Best of all - as another commenter noted - were the homemade small apple pies from the pink cart in the parking lot. (Rhubarb pies were also available but we stuck with traditional.) The pies were fantastic!

Just outside and south of Clifden is the turn-off from R341 for the Alcock & Brown Landing Site, an area that also offers a beautiful landscape for a quiet and historically interesting walk. It is your lucky day if parked nearby is the "Pink Wagon." Offering, tea, coffee and sandwiches, etc.,it is managed by a lovely couple, Geraldine and Toon. But take note: Consider it your exceptionally lucky day if there are any Apple Tarts available -- baked by Toon. This is Pastry at its very finest and most sublime. And if you are driving by without time for the walk to the historic landing site, indulge yourself and at least stop for the Apple Tart, and marvel what great pastry can be!

We visited here in the last few days, the weather was nice and dry. There is information at the entrance to the entrance mostly regarding Marconi . Not a lot if info on Alcock and Brown. We decided to walk the 5k loop to have look. Its very pleasant walk with lots of sheep and turf cutting going on when we were there.

My wife, four kids and a dog were looking for something to do, we decided on an impromptu visit to the site where alcock and brown crash landed in 1919, however, what is actually more fascinating is that where the plane crash landed in 1919 was the land owned by irish italian inventor marconi who had built a huge complex including generators, and transmitters in which he used to pioneer Morse code and radio tranmssion between ireland and the Americas. I'm surprised that galway hasnt made the marconi story into it's own actual attraction, with guide tours, cafe, museum etc and actually charge to visit the area. We thoroughly enjoyed this visit and it was completely free. Highly recommend.

The landing site is in the bogland just outside Clifden. The area is very interesting as it was also where Marconi had his base to make the first commercial transmissions across the Atlantic. There are solid tracks so walking is easy and it's mostly level ground. Well worth a visit.

Take the N341 south from Clifton towards Ballyconneely. After 5 or 10 minutes drive, the Alcock and Brown landing site and Marconi radio station site are signposted on the left. There's a little carpark and then a 40-60 minute round trip walk across the bog (there's a path/boardwalk) to the actual site. Nice views. Or, a few metres after the signposts to the left, you can turn right and drive up the hill to a carpark right beside the Alcock and Brown Memorial. The views are again lovely. Very windy the day we were here so you really feel the size of the Atlantic right beside you. There's nothing amazing to see, but these are historic spots and there are no queues or crowds so why miss it?

We decided to visit the site on a wet dull day in November. It was mid afternoon. We found the entrance to the site and reD the introductory notice board. There was a board walk leading away from the board which we started to follow. Nhowever there were no way markers or signs indicating the way to go nor anything explaining distances. Consequently we had to abandon our visit to the exact monument which was a pity.
