If you want to see how the average Irish family lived in the 18th and 19th centuries, pay just €7 to walk inside several real homes, furnished exactly as they were when people left them.
The blacksmith shop and homes seem as though the people just stepped out for a moment.
The first experience here is meeting at least 2 huge beautiful puppies: young Irish WolfHounds!

My wife and I researched this place a lot as part of the Ring of Kerry tour. I am not sure why this place is even part of the bus tour except as a way to make money from tourists. I could have given it a four had they put forth any really effort to interact with tourists. The best part was a little kid playing the accordion in one of the rooms. The signs were old and need to be cleaned up a bit. The dogs were fun to see, but even they lacked enthusiasm. Still, if you take the bus tour, then at least go in and pay the minimal Euro charge. Is it worth it? Sure, as you will see what life was like long ago and you will learn about the potato famine. Luckily, our research gave us a good spirit to enjoy the simple things. Oh...and get a Guinness to take on the bus as the tour continues.

This was one of our first stops as we toured the Ring of Kerry. I absolutely loved it. Take time to visit each cottage and learn a bit about life in a big village.
The highlight for me was seeing and petting 3 beautiful Irish Wolfhounds.
I strongly disagree with any negative reviews - this is an outdoor museum and replicates a bog village; it is not a restored actual village & I certainly didn’t expect it to be. It is interesting and an enjoyable experience.

This historic village shares a parking lot with the Red Fox Inn and is a popular bus stop on the Ring of Kerry. We paid the modest entrance fee and spent a half an hour touring the grounds and visiting the nice little gift shop. The Irish Wolfhounds are huge and lovable. The old town is interesting and well kept. Small little houses and shops with thatched roofs, filled with antiques from a simpler time. Go there first and use your 50 cent coupon for an Irish coffee next door.

I loved this outdoor museum. It had very interesting history about the turf cutting plus plenty of old equestrian. It also has some animals. I especially loved the old gypsy wagon, and the old forge.

This is certainly a unique and super weird/creepy little man made village, but I would not recommend spending time or money visiting it as there's really not much to see or do and nothing there is original -it's entirely a created "village" with no real value or purpose. Our hired driver/guide for the day took us here despite us asking him to avoid any tourist trap type places. No idea why he felt this was a legitimate site to visit (I assume that he gets a kick back) but we would have much preferred to save our money and instead spend more time literally anywhere else (like the Kerry cliffs or one of the amazing beaches or maybe the Skellig chocolate factory). I strongly encourage people to avoid this odd little stop on the Ring of Kerry as it has no lasting value or impact and is basically a waste of time and money that seems to be in existence solely to give the tour guides a bathroom stop.

What is a bog for? It’s not a place to keep dogs.
I think some people may have mistaken the reason for the naming of this venue.
It must have been a big venture when it was set up. But maintenance is vital to any exhibition . I doubt any cleaning has been done in years. Whilst it’s about times past , it’s not appropriate to show us filthy exhibits, with damp dirty bedding . Numerous items on display are not of the period , in particular modern crockery.
The Entrance is not manned you have to go into the pub to buy entrance tickets. The large gift shop is closed, you have to go in the pub to shop instead, no way was I spending another cent unless it was to support the animals.
First animals seen.
Two Irish wolfhounds should be a magnificent sight. They don’t belong in an exhibition about a very poor village. They belonged to rich men , a sign of wealth they hunted wolves. So there is no reason for them to be here.
They look very sad and unkempt, one has a fatty growth on the back of a front leg. Far too big at around 10cm diameter to not have been noticed, treated and possibly medicated. This young bitch was desperate to please the older Dog but as she was not in season he had no time for her, repeatedly pushing her away. Both were gentle dogs desperate to be petted. They seemed to know no commands. A plain open sided shelter had rubber mats and a couple of torn blankets. A run looked like it was never used as the weeds were 30cm high. It wasn’t total physical neglect but it was emotional neglect. Everything was way below par.
I hope these dogs who need lots of exercise get a big walk morning and evening and go home to a family situation. If they are left onsite then they are definitely neglected. No toy’s nothing to stimulate them in any way.
Un- groomed they were a very sad sight.
They enjoyed each group of visitors, but with so few people visiting when we were there it must be very boring for them.
The ponies and a donkey seemed to be better cared for. It’s not something I know a lot about. But they looked bored. Just standing there looking back at us across a gap .
The staff had poor English. Not a single person was there to answer questions. Prevent accidents on large pieces of old farm machinery and peat cutting tools.
I’m quite disturbed by the whole experience. No one to prevent cruel children or adults from taunting or hurting the animals. If this place has insurance they must tell lots of lies on the application.
The dogs would be happier in a dog shelter. People to love them, groom them. Give them medical attention and an appropriate diet.
No one was there to see if anyone fed anything to the animals. A child with chocolate could kill one.
I’m ashamed I visit this awful in many ways museum. It’s disgusting in lots of ways.
I hope that this will stop soon.

Back in the US this would be labeled a tourist trap. WE were near the end of the day so paid at the bar and had the place to ourselves (we were worried since technically closing time – but she assured us we could take as long as we wanted – but in the end we did not need much time). The exhibits were so-so (but we had seen better in Muckross), no info if relocations, replicas or just made up. No bog just a few worn signs to read about bogs.

Don't waste your time or money stopping at this tourist trap. The museum is run down and it's obvious they don't spend the 7 Euro admission fee to maintain it.
