Visited on a very misty day but great walk very well signed posted with yellow posts give a true feel of being on the mountains. Great views even through the rolling mist.
Just a observation the day we went and we're half way up to the top there was a bull in a field but no gate . Four bullocks with him. They seemed completely calm and indifferent to us but I was glad we were on a loop walk. He did watch us as we passed.

Not much to see with the buildings, with castle as a ruin and Manor cordoned off
BUT the walk was fab, beautiful views out on to Bere island. Can park well in the toad past puxley Manor

Always a favourite walk of mine when I’m in Castletownbere & Beara. I love the Dunboy Loop walk with the hound. It’s beautiful 😍

If you call in to look at the ruins of Dunboy Castle & the Puxley Manor (closed), don’t miss the headland walkway starting from Dunboy Castle. A lovely, well maintained costal pathway with great sea views.

Dunboy Castle was very cool, though some information on the site would have been helpful - similar to the plaques found elsewhere. The ruins are overgrown and you almost stumble into them. The Puxley mansion on the other hand dominates the landscape, and is marred by the temporary fencing that surrounds it, allowing no access. Hopefully whatever works have been ongoing can be concluded to open the house up to guests or to visitors.

The Dunboy Castle is in ruins, but well-marked by historical informational placques. The Puxley Mansion is fenced off and closed. That is a shame as it would be a great place to explore. While we were at these sites, we did not see another tourist. It was great to have the site to ourselves.

First you leave the R572 Dursey road and pass Puxley Mansion, a fine but long-neglected neo-Gothic house which is now very, very slowly being converted into a luxury hotel (or they've already given up). Continuing along the rhododendron-lined lane, you come to the beautifully situated ruin of Dunboy Castle, the scene of one of many Irish sieges and massacres perpetrated by English troops, this one in 1602. There are trails from the castle, but they are not well marked, so be prepared to walk further than the 3 km claimed in the guidebooks. The walks take you through beautiful countryside, the reason for my 4-star rating.

Way back in August 1990 we visited the ruins of Dunboy Castle and the Puxley Mansion on our honeymoon. Everything was better then, sad to say, and cows could get shelter in the ruins of the mansion. The water was pellucidly clear everywhere, not green and murky as it is now (God only knows what has run off into it). The mansion refurbishment looks alright, incomplete as it is. But the empty apartments built above it (and the airbridge to the mansion) are tasteless to the extent of being appalling. Dowlwan is spot on about them. How the hell planning permission was given for such monstrosities is beyond us, at least outside the explanation already suggested. This mess says everything about the crassness and vulgarity of the Brave New Ireland. Worth a visit if it is your first. Otherwise you will be gravely disappointed.

Has anyone ever come over from England to see Dunboy Castle? I’m curious how I would do it. What the steps are to get there the fastest... where to fly into in Ireland and then once I’m at the airport, how to get down to Dunboy Castle

Thanks! I actually just made it back home last Friday. It was a fantastic trip! Went to Dunboy Castle Ruin but also did the Dingle Peninsula, Killarney, and Castletownbere.

How can I safely and legally see Dunboy Castle and take pictures? I’m a descendant of Chieftan Dónal O’Sullivan and thought it would be neat to see something from my heritage.

The ruins of the 15th century Dunboy Castle, scene of the Siege of Dunboy in 1602, are open to the public and you can walk in and around them at will. There are parking spaces adjacent and you can also take a footpath from there for a walk along the shore. Puxley Manor, which you pass on the way to the castle ruins, is an entirely separate and different site which some people confuse with Dunboy Castle. Puxley Manor dates from the 18th century, was blown up by the IRA in 1921, and was the subject of a renovation project as a hotel which foundered in 2010. The site remains semi-derelict.

Lads you could always turn it into a college and use those rooms as dorms for students. Greencastle should have some competition or a teaching hospital since Bantry is 30 miles down the road and thank God they are. Saved many of us! But you are loaded with nurses in the Beara peninsula and the irish are noted for being well educated. I'd go for the college aspect and get your money returned in spades and the tourism from visiting families for students would boost the area no? However I would warn you very specifically...you better put a wee chapel into the house and make sure that a mass is celebrated for the souls within daily. If you don't? nothing is going to work out for you. I'm sorry but it can't be ignored. I hope to see you in business by Christmas this year 2017. Also, dredge the spot where the wreck was/is? and build a jetty for day trips and visits from cruise ships up from Bantry. Dreams ought not to die. Rock on Beara! A seafood culinary college? Ask John Murphy Titch. Can't wait to see how you get on.
