A Clean & Charming Old Cemetery that Speaks History
aug. 2021 • Alene
*Local review

To walk on this cemetery is to appreciate Cobh’s rich local and maritime past. This hallowed ground is also the resting place of the Lusitania victims and a testament to Cobh's humanitarian effort to the tragedy. After Cobh folks aided on the recovery of the bodies, they also respectfully decided to bury them on three mass graves and 20 private graves on the town's Old Church Cemetery.

I am giving this a 5 star because this is an experience unlike the usual touristy experience in Cobh or anywhere. The surrounding is well-tended and mowed (no overgrown grass nor the creepy impression of a cemetery). In fact, the Cork City Council has strict regulations in preserving its current state.

While on the area, spend some time spotting old headstones, renowned Cobh locals like Dr James Verling, Jack Doyle and others, Celtic crosses, impressive statues of saints, fine ironworks and even the biodiversity of the cemetery.

A hidden treasure and a must for history buffs and maritime enthusiasts

This graveyard is off the beaten track, but is one to recommend if you are visiting Cobh. There are three large graves for the victims of the Lusitania and lots of other graves including those who died in the Great War and World War II. It wasn't too busy and had lots of time to explore. There is also an old church on site and the oldest grave in the 1600's

Great Place To Get A History Lesson
sep. 2019
Visited here as part of a tour group.
This was a most interesting and serine location to visit. Our guide made notice of several Celtic Crosses and explained how the cross was developed. He also pointed out several graves of prominent Irish folk. It was a very informative talk and we enjoyed his session. I would consider returning to this location if ever in the area again.

Our tour minibus stopped here so we could see the memorials to the Lithuania. So touching to see the names of the people lost when it sunk.

Typisch Englischer Friedhof
aug. 2018 • Alene

Lusitania Graves
apr. 2019 • Par
The main draw to this cemetery is the fact three mass graves for some of the victims of the Lusitania sinking are located here. It’s quite a solemn place. Anyone interested in history or who likes old graveyards would probably like a short stop here.

Lusitania burial ground

We made a quick stop at this cemetery, which was well worth the visit. Lusitania passengers are buried here, and the oldest grave is over 400 years old.

Clean, well kept, easy to navigate

This cemetery is very clean, well kept, and easy to find the graves you are looking for.

There are three mass graves and a couple of individual graves for the victims of the Lusitania. Some notable graves include Jack Doyle the boxer, and poet Charles Wolfe.

I would stop by and enjoy the older graves, the inscriptions, and take in some history.

Nice for a quick visit

Naturally, your enjoyment of this "attraction" will vary depending on how much you do or don't like old cemeteries. The primary draw for this little place is that it is the resting place of many victims of the Lusitania. So there is certainly an attraction for certain history buffs.

It's also very picturesque. Gorgeous markers, many with celtic symbols (surprise!).

My wife enjoyed taking some lovely photos, mixing the markers with the lovely flowers growing wild throughout. I enjoyed quick immersion into history. In either case, our 20 minute visit was a delightful little stop during our cruise port visit to the area.

Well kept clean and tidy, went to visi the buriel plot of a family member who died whilst on the Lucitania, unfortunatly the plot had a wooden cross that has since rotted away but we did find the plot although not makrked.
