There is a huge amount of work being done here, a massive reconstruction job. As a consequence the interior is closed but given that it is right in the centre of town you can walk around the outside and get an idea of how wonderful its going to be when work is completed and the Castle is open.
Tantalising, and the work will be worth it in the end even if it means you cant get in at the moment

I stopped off in Askerton whilst touring in my camper van. I was offered a tour of island where castle and hellfire club remains are when I called by the tourist information to ask if the building behind was the castle or the hellfire club. However when they realised I was visiting alone I was told I couldn't go and that I should look at it from the bridge. THey said didn't do one to one tours which is understandable however there were plenty of other people around and I wasn't invited to tag on with another tour. Very disappointed and made to feel unwelcome. I often tour on my own so I may stop as I wish but I also frequently bring friends that are visiting from overseas to see Ireland's attractions. I certainly won't bring anyone here after today's experience. Never before have I been discriminated against for being a solo traveller

Beautiful ruins and is apparently under some type of construction. The rock is very old and the structure is beautiful to look at, however, the single construction worker banging at the rock was off-putting. I'm sure it will be something beautiful when they're done though. :)

While touring some little towns along the Shannon River, I stopped in Askeaton to view this castle ruin. It's in the middle of town, off a stone bridge, and is pretty awe-inspiring due to its jagged shape and what's left of it. It has an otherworldly beauty.

Anglicy spalili wtedy miasto i pobliskie opactwo. W 1652 roku siły Olivera Cromwella rozebrały częściowo zamek i tak stoi do dzisiaj. W obecnej chwili przeprowadzany jest remont.

This is one of the better Desmond castles, but has fallen into a fairly poor state over the past 100 years. Now, however, the state has undertaken the restoration of the lovely building in the middle of Askeaton. It's a bit hard to see right now with all the construction, but will be well worth a visit when it has been further restored.

The tourist info centre has more information on it, but we enjoyed a view of it and some photo time from the footpath. There is a little area for day time where people can view it at a table while the repairs are being carefully undetaken and restoration is happening. We recommend getting some fish and chips take away from town and having them looking out at this castle for fun.
