It takes about 45mins to walk the track alongside the loch to reach the castle. It looks the part with its stone turrets and fire in the entrance hall. The gardens were colourful when we visited in mid June. The walled veg garden looked particularly well cared for. And there was plenty of colour in the formal grounds. The views up to the loch head are stunning from the overhanging waterside patio.
There’s a bus back if you don’t want to walk. Watch out for midges in the tearoom courtyard!

Unfortunately the castle is currently closed to visitors. They originally closed due to Covid and took that opportunity to start renovations. The renovations are not yet complete, however.

The gardens here are lovely and there are many paths to wander through. The castle was closed when we were there, but the setting itself is worth the stop.

I must say this was the highlight of our stay. The walk through Glenveagh National park with stunning views all around before arriving at the castle of which breath taking grounds. Walled gardens and for a change no charge to get in here

Very extensive gardens which are showing lots of signs of Spring .
A lot of work has already been done , the pandemic obviously took it's toll .
So much to see !

On our last day of visiting donegal, we were recommended to go for a walk and see the sights. The weather wasn't the best but that didn't stop us from seeing such a beautiful view from the top of the hill over looking the lake and castle.

Visited it when staying in Letterkenny. Excellent and looking forward to returning when in the area, we went in to the visitor centre and purchased return tickets for the bus back from the castle. Its a beautiful 4km walk from the centre to the castle along the lake. Loads of other walks around the castle and gardens. The restaurant at the castle did not seem to be in full operation on the first sunday of the new year but it was nice just to be able to get a coffee and cakes and then got the bus back to the carpark. There is also a restaurant in the visitor centre but was closed that day.
Admission to park is free , you just pay for the bus if you don't feel like doing the return walk, the bus runs every 30 minutes.
Highly recommend a visit to it

Enjoyed the hike up and back as well as wandering these gorgeous grounds. I wish I had more time here, but with the hike and bad weather moving in, I had to get back to the hotel for dinner. Defo one to return to when in the area.

Unfortunately, the castle is closed due to COVID. The gardens are beautiful and there are so many different walks to do. You can walk from the car park to the castle or take the shuttle bus which is electric. There is also bike hire on site which we did not use. We did a lovely walk to the waterfall from the castle and really enjoyed it. Great cafe on site with lovely coffee and food. Overall, it's a great day out with beautiful nature to enjoy and mostly free

Yes the park is open in October. Beautiful views. And from the car park there is shuttle buses to the castle also. Just check for tour times if you want to see inside the castle as these have to be purchased. Rest of national park is free.

Does anyone know if blue badge holders can drive up to and park at the castle?

I think you can drive up, though probably following the bus as they are very safety conscious. Try phoning and ask if it’s possible

I have a place to stay in Letterkenny but how to get to Letterkenny from Londonderry without a car? Then how to get from Letterkenny to Glenveagh Castle? I will be coming in a few days! Thanks for your help!

Yes plenty of buses from derry to Letterkenny , the Derry -Galway express is probably the quickest takes about 35 mins . Letterkenny to Glenveagh is more difficult it's only 25 mins but I'm not sure if there is a bus but I will make some enquiries or maybe a taxi would suffice
When is the castle open for tours please? We hope to arrive on Monday 25th April 2016 thank you.

The centre opens at 09:00. If you walk to the castle and then wander through the gardens (my favourite is the vegetable/fruit garden with it's unusual plants and quirky buildings), you'll be in time for the castle opening.at 10:00. Take the tour and you can then take the bus back. If you want you can also grab a coffee in the tea shop - that opens at 10:30.

How far is the castle from letterkenny? Is it open on Sunday 06/03/16

Approx 77 klm, which should only take a little more than one hour. Check it on Google Earth if you'd like exact directions. When you get to the park there's a minibus available to take you to the castle & only costs 1 euro (well worth it) You can choose to walk instead if you have lots of time & this would take a good 30mins each way. The park & castle are open most of the year including Sunday 6/3/2016. It's a lovely place & well worth the visit & there's a great cafe/coffee shop. Enjoy!

Yes the castle is open all year but with just a few exceptions. Also there may be reduced hours during the winter months, so best to check by contacting the visitor centre. Enjoy!
