Fabulous, made even better with easily accessible toilets with a double buggy
okt. 2021
We live within easy travel distance to Birr castle and it’s lovely. Loads of space and cool things to look at. We have visited a few times. Today I went alone with the 2 kids under 3 and it was still enjoyable. We did the pumpkin hunt which toddler loved.
But most of all, I used the toilets for the first time ever and I easily got the double buggy in and out! Couldn’t leave it outside with the baby in it so had to try get it inside but it was a breeze! Toilets were light, airy and very clean. Option of disposable hand towels or hand dryer too so toddler wasn’t afraid to dry her hands. Very happy.

Impressive and interesting place
sep. 2021
We spent about four hours here visiting the extensive and interesting gardens and the science centre. It was amazing to see the giant telescope and learn about this very impressive family. I would love to go back as there is so much to take in.

Pretty Average Tour, Nice Gardens
aug. 2021
The weather was great when we visited and did the walking tour so that was a positive.
The guide was chatty and friendly but to be honest I was expecting a lot more history and a lot less flora. Science and astronomy is a big element of the more recent history of the castle residents but very little was told about the history before the current family were planted there 400 years ago. Pretty much the whole story was about them in the last 200 years and their impressive achievements in science and engineering. There was a lot of talk too about the gardens and the flora therein. If that is your interest then you'll likely enjoy the tour more than a history buff like me did.
The €12 per head for the tour also includes admittance to the science museum, the museum is small but well presented and laid out.
After the tour you can explore the gardens at your leisure. If it's a nice day I'd recommend bringing a picnic, there are lots of areas to sit. For small kids while the tour won't be of much interest, there is a pretty cool playground on site for them.

Stunning views, great value

Went for a day with my kids 11 and 9. The morning turned out to be a bit damp but that worked in our favour as we had the place mainly to ourselves. It was so peaceful to walk around and there is lots to explore and amazing sites. We walked part of it, had a picnic (lots of tables and benches dotted about) and then checked out the tree house. My kids loved it. After a coffee and letting them play for awhile we explored further and found more hidden gems. Back to the tree house again and then checked out the science centre. Overall we spent about 5 hours here which for €20 for the 3 of us I thought was really good. We will definitely go back.

Disappointing
aug. 2021
For our visit while it was dry we aimed to see all of the outdoor locations first and leave the museum visit until last in case the weather changed. We ended up separating for a few minutes and while I was allowed into the museum the other half of my family arriving 5 minutes later wasn't as they were told that the museum had to be sanitised as a covid precaution.

Early closing of exhibits wasn't advertised anywhere or mentioned to us in advance on entry so how could anyone possibly ever know this and so plan accordingly and not have the inevitable disappointment and frustration for no good reason???

So half the family unfortunately missed out on this whole section and sat in the courtyard bored waiting for us finish. Meanwhile when it became obvious that nobody was actually taking the trouble to sanitise anything I checked this by backtracking through the handful of interconnected rooms and can confirm that I couldn't see a single member of Staff make any attempt to sanitize anything at any point right up until closing time at 6pm.

That's just miserable isn't it? Birr Castle, once the seat of astounding intellectual ingenuity and innovation is now reduced to suffering the Management and control of the type of people who would cynically and shamelessly deny Children a museum visit because they were pretending to sanitise their premises, presumably so they could finish early and have nice chats.

We travelled to Birr Castle as a Family group of made up of 2 adults and 3 children.
Booking of tickets online was irritating due to the odd and inexplicable practice you sometimes see (rarely thankfully) where a 'family ticket' can only consist of 2 adults and up to 2 children.

I cannot imagine why any family-orientated destination would aim to start your experience by alienating its main Customer base of families with young Children seemingly in the interests of smalltime greed and short-sighted penny pinching.

So instead of booking as a family as you might expect we booked as a group of:

1 X Adult, 1 X Adult, 1 X Child, 1 X Child , 1 X Child.

While this was only at a minor additional cost it is 100% the principle of the thing that grates here....

On arrival the guy at the ticket booth asked us had we been there before - And despite us saying not in a long time he decided it was best not to offer the kids the option of getting an A4 sheet of paper and pencil to complete the treasure trail / quest type activity designed to engage and occupy kids.

It was only after observing other Children happily filling theirs out we had to backtrack some distance to the kiosk again and specifically ask for these pieces of paper. This shouldn't be the case, at least make people aware so they can opt in or out? - I assume again that this was another cynical policy aimed at keeping costs down and profits up.

These people seem to seriously begrudge the very inconvenience involved in having Visitors - Forget the stargazing - Perhaps it's time for you to instead consider a more introspective lens.

Amazing hidden gem
aug. 2021
An amazing place to pass a few hours. Brought my 16 year old daughter, who has an interest in all things Engineering and science. Fantastic place!
Went mainly to see the telescope, but was more than surprised with the amount of other things to do. We started with the River walk, lovely and peaceful, great views of the Suspension bridge, holy Wells and diversity of unusual and historic Trees. We continued with the radio telscope, and on the the main telsescope, which is incredible engineering for its time!
From there onto the Formal gardens and cofee shop for Lunch. Quick coffee and into the science galleries, which were well presented, clean and educational. Can't understand how I missed this place before. Well worth the entrance fee, with a great playground and most walks accessible to buggys and wheelchairs. Clean toilets and coffee shop, and friendly staff.
I will be back!

Disappointing
aug. 2021
Expensive fee (€10 pp to visit someone's large garden badly in need of work.
The "Great" observatory was a "great" disappointment.
You don't even get to look into it.... so what's the point?
The fact that it was built during the famine didn't help.
A rich colonial British man indulging his hobby while millions around him starved....

Wow! Fantastic site. So much to see for children and adults. We will be back for sure! Staff in the reception were so kind and helpful (the same can not be said for the Café staff). We hope to do a castle tour upon our next visit, however it is still worth the €10 admission price just for the gardens alone. They are out of this world. So unique and specifically we really enjoyed the formal gardens and telescope.
