Very atmospheric as it has no mains electricity, so take a torch if it's dark. It's fairly plain inside but interesting to see. There's a couple of parking spaces on the side of the road, opposite the fenced path up to it , a short walk away.

Nice wee walk to get to it by the long crofts and the sheep munching away. But the church was locked up and could not get in but managed to get some photos of the inside.

The current St Moluag's chuch is at least 800 years old and a church was original built on the site in the 560's. It is associated with the Maelrubha, the patron saint of the Morrison Clan. Both Maelrubha and the small church are associated with healing, in particular, of mental illness. One amazing thing in the church that I have not seen before is a little side room with a large "squint", basically, a hole in the wall that allowed people with communicable diseases (like leprosy was presumed to be) to view the service without coming into contact with worshippers.

This church is located about 300 feet from the main road. A stone wall surrounds the pathway whose purpose is to keep the sheep from roaming into the church grounds. A plaque in the church dates the consecration to the 6th century. The interior is rather dark because of the lack of windows. According to our tour guide, remains without electricity or water. Lighting is by oil lamp and candle. On one side of the church is a small chapel with a long opening where those with communicable diseases (such as leprosy) to take part in services without coming into contact with those in the church itself. Well-worth a visit.

This tiny ancient church is in the beach village of Eoropie not far from the Butt of Lewis lighthouse, but it is not easy to find. Look for the sign saying parking for the church (which as far as I can see is the space in front of two houses alongside the road) and then look across the fields (looking right if you are facing north) and you will see a small compact church with a narrow path linking it to the road. The inside of the church is atmospheric and quiet with a nice stained glass window. Just outside the church next to the entrance is a wonderfully carved Celtic cross. Well worth visiting if you are in the area, but not worth a major detour.

For one reason or another most of us have been in places of worship equally ancient. What you cannot help but soak up is the altogether unpolished end - result of those early worshippers' best endeavours. No crisp stone masonry, lavish stained glass or commemorative tablets to wealthy patrons.
It is easy to imagine how much in the protection of their God those people must have felt with the elements doing their worst outside while they were on the inside of rough and sturdy walls. Worth the walk.

Stop by here on your way to the Butt of Lewis lighthouse. Follow the little path from the street straight back the 200 yards or so to the church. There's a sign near the door that says the church is open, just push hard because the door is stiff. Go in and pick up a brochure explaining the history of the church and leave a small donation. I'd never been in a 12th century church before, so the sheer history of the place fascinated me. It's still in use on high days and holy days, and you can feel the centuries of people who pilgrimaged to this remote Christian outpost.

cette petite église en vieille pierres, de la même époque que les black houses, sans doute, mais qui elles malheureusement sont en ruine...c'est très différent des églises austères et strictes parsemées dans les îles

Beautiful little church we came across but accident. Lovely path up to the church, gave you a sense of life many years ago. Just a shame you could not go inside, think it would have been an experience, although there is an information board telling you it is opened daily for a short period of time, but does not give you the times or we would definitely have gone back. Well worth a visit, just ask someone when it is open as I think this would add to the experience
