Built on a ridge above Chamkhar town in the valley of Bumthang, the Jakar Dzong or 'Castle of the White Bird' refers to its foundation myth, according to which a roosting white bird signaled the proper and auspicious location to found a monastery here around 1549. About 100 years later in 1667, the monastery was expanded into the current fortress. The Dzong has played a pivotal role in defence of the eastern districts, having survived 3 attacks from Tibetan invaders. It was also the seat of the first king of Bhutan. Entry is free. Must be accompanied by a local guide and dress in appropriate attire.

As most Bhutanese ancient fortresses Jakar Dzong is a fortress-monastery. Part of it is used for government offices today. We came there while they were rehearsing ritual dances for the upcoming festival.

Jakar Dzong or the Fortress of the White Bird is strategically located on a ridge overlooking the beautiful and wide Bumthang valley of traditional houses, a small domestic airport strip, colorful new buildings and fertile fields. From a distance, the Dzong look like a white bird amid the lush green landscape, although the significance of the white bird is more divine and spiritual. Initially, while selecting a site for building a temple, a big white bird is supposed to have risen from the current site signifying a positive omen and thus a temple was built then. About 100 years later in 1667, the temple was extended into the current structure/fortress and named Jakar Dzong. Over the centuries, the Dzong played an important role in defending off many Tibetan invasion and was a stronghold for the security of the central and eastern Bhutan.
Even though the Dzongs in Punakha, Thimphu and Trongsa look bigger, however the Jakar Dzong is considered the biggest with a circumference of more than 1,500 meters. The two unique and special features of the Jakar Dzong is its 50 meters high Utse (central tower) attached to the main eastern wall and its well protected water supply source (important in-case of a siege in the olden days).
Like all the Dzongs in the country, the Jakar Dzong houses the district administration offices, few temples and monk’s living quarters. A visitor can interact with the young novice monks and also enjoy the scenic views of the beautiful valley below.

For the several fortress visit around Bhutan. Jakar fortress was one of the unique fortress as there were no painting at the entrance, whereas most of the fortress had the similar painting at the entrance. And also the architect looks unique.
From the fortress one can also enjoy the great views of bumthang valley.

Hello Travellers.
After completing my Ura Valley tour, I headed towards main City Jakar, headquarters and Capital city of Bumthang District. The Place is so silent and serene. If you’re planning to visit beyond Central Bhutan, do visit Jakar city and Jakar Dzong. The Dzong stands on the upper ridge side, situated on Chamkhar valley of Bumthang and looks like an ancient royal palace.
You can feel the essence of silence and can experience the real beauty around. As I entered, I saw young Monks were preparing for some festival and also served me with masala tea. The Dzong is too big, for some moment I lost my way and the doors of the Dzong are very big.
I would recommend everyone to visit this place, if you’re planning to visit Bumthang District and beyond places.

As Dzongs go this is one of the smaller ones in Bhutan. It is quaint and sits on a hill overlooking the valley. A great place to start a tour of the area.

Having visited several dzongs, I thought Jakar Dzong would be yet another. But it was special as young monks were playing soccer in the courtyard and running around having fun. The Dzong houses admin and religious offices and has a big assembly hall. It is located on a hill above the town so dominates the town in the valley.

I see you visited the Bumthang area to see the Jakar Tshechu festival. Can you tell me about your accommodations? How far was the hotel from the festival/temple performance?
Skrevet 13. februar 2017
Hi, Bumthang is a small town and it would depend on where you exactly stay. There are numerous hotels. If I consider the city centre, it would take about 15-20 minutes to reach the Dzong. It is a very large and old Dzong. Visit is well worth it. I hope I have not been too late to answer your question.
