This visit to the temple surprised us for good. The temple complex is interesting and quite large although it looks restored and modern, but the natural setting in which it is situated and the low number of tourists make it to me worth visiting if you are going to be in Korea for a couple of weeks or more.

This place is known for holding a complete version of Tripiṭaka Koreana carved into wooden blocks, containing a complete version of Buddhist text, and the oldest written in the chinese script used for Korean writing before Hangul. Some of the wooden blocks are visible in the storage, which are buildings built with gaps in between pillars to allow for ventilation and help preserve the blocks.
Directly in front of this building is the Great Hall of Tranquil Light. Despite being the most prominent of the temples in the complex, it does not house an image of the Buddha. The presiding image is of the Vairocana Buddha. Most of the temples exhibit sophisticated architectural style of the Sill period with projecting dougongs, five armed non-load bearing dougongs are the corners and the signature green, blue and red colours associated with Korean architecture of this period. Subsidiary temple honour many other Buddhas of Korean Buddhism, including Amitabh and Nahanjonja etc

Climb through the forest for at least 20/25 minutes. Temple containing the Tripitaka Koreana (81,256 wooden tablets engraved by the monks) no access to the room because it is protected. We can see them through the bars

I have seen a lot of temples in my life, it is certainly one of the most beautiful I have seen.
In an idyllic setting with great walks to take
And although maps does not give good timetables there is a bus every hour from Daegu bus station

This temple does not appear in all the circuits, although it is a remarkable ensemble, in a very beautiful, relaxing setting. And registered with UNESCO. So, there are few tourists there, which adds to the charm and tranquility. Note, a 12 m high Buddha.

I did the templestay here. The tripitaka koreana, a UNESCO heritage site, is present together with the building in which it is kept

A 5 star location to visit BUT a 3 star rating to stay here overnight as a Temple Stay guest. Why?
Even sleeping in the new ensuite twin bed rooms, the overnight stay here was a penance. Communal, single sex on floor sleeping as still offered would have been even more confronting to us mature western travellers.
The reception and sleeping wing is up at the top of a long hill but the temple complex and dining area is towards the bottom; so you need to be young and fit. Time management by the hosts also requires you to do things too quickly.
I would highly recommend still visiting the temple complex but not to stay overnight and definitely not to look forward to eating here. The whole Exodus tour group were disappointed with the quality and limited variety of food offered for both dinner and breakfast. And we knew that it was simple all vege food. And you only have 15 minutes to eat each. Where was the variety of (non spiced) vegetables and why a total lack of fruit? Tiny, cone shaped paper water cups also did not assist my digestion.
Most of us thought that the overnight stay here was a purely money making commercial enterprise and definitely not suited to westerners.
The highlight was accessing the wood block library; but I think that you can do this as a day visitor. Some enjoyed the Four Instruments sound meditation too.
Give the evening meditation and the 04:00 morning ceremony a miss as you have the right to not participate.
The temple is set in stunning surroundings and with mid October autumn colour it is very photogenic; just think carefully about staying here overnight.

. Hingehen. Es lohnt !

This was one of our highlights when it came to the sites visited in Korea. It’s an active monastery situated in a national park date back to the 9th century. You can scroll the grounds as the monks go about there duties. At the back of the property are some buildings housing very old manuscripts - so keep climbing the stairs.

i am planing to go in mid of october.. is that very easy to get bus from Busan to Haeinsa temple.
plain to stay one night at Busan for sightseeing the Busan city then go temple stay @ Haeinsa temple.
i have trolley luggage , is that easy to walk from bus stop to the temple with luggage ? is that ok to convenient to carry trolley luggage to travel with public bus ?
Skrevet 27. september 2019
Hello there! Korea has excellent public transportation. I think you meant “ carry on” luggage. I am not sure if the bus stop is close to the temple. The walk to the temple is easy. There’s a slight incline but manageable.

Hello,
It looks , from your review, that you were not able to see the Tripitaka Koreana during your visit. Why is that so? is the temple worth the difficult transfer?
Would really appreciate your feedback.
Thank you!
Skrevet 5. september 2016
You can see the Tripitaka from distance. More than 5 meter. 2 sample of Tripitaka show in close distance.
Don't expect to see thousand of Tripitaka.
Personally, I don't think worth it to visit. You can see the replica of Tripitaka easily at other local museum.

I made a reservation on the templestay website, but didn't receive a confirmation. Will I be able to stay there if I just show up at the appointed time on a Saturday?

I would like to know the accommodation for a temple stay. We are a couple. Do we get a private room? Do we get a bed and mattress? Thank you for your answer.
Skrevet 23. februar 2015
We've not yet done a temple stay, but my understanding is privacy and comfort shouldn't be expected. I've heard it can be an amazing experience, but as the parent of younger children, it's something we haven't yet experienced. I'd say go for it!
