A great stop on Kodiak island. The whale skeleton was very cool, I I loved the photos and explanations on how they found a washed up whale and produced the finished skeleton. They have wonderful information on the island, and their native populations.

The ranger at the desk (with the southern accent) was awesome! He had so much information and the patience to answer all of our questions! The whale skeleton is definitely worth the visit!

Small free museum full of info on local plants and animals, especially the Kodiak bears. Well organized and plenty of museum personnel to answer any questions

Amazing displays and highly recommend the Junior Ranger activities for kids. Even our pre-teens enjoyed the activities. The Artist sketches of the Whale bones on the second floor are not to be missed.

This is a small but nice center dedicated to the wildlife of Kodiak. Talking to the staff is more informative than most of the exhibits. They have a huge skeleton of a grey whale. It’s a good place to start before you head out into the wild, but the wild is where you need to experience the wonderful wildlife of Kodiak

With a few hours to kill before heading inland by float plane, my wife and I decided to make a quick spin through downtown Kodiak. We walked over to the simple but beautiful Russian Orthodox Church, the island’s visitor center, the Baranov museum, and then to the visitor center for the National Wildlife Refuge. In many ways, this was the best of the lot. Free — a bonus — and run by young rangers who were both knowledgeable and extremely friendly, the center has a very small but excellent museum centered around the islands’ wildlife, especially its famous Kodiak Brown Bears. There is a nice little gift shop and, upstairs, the complete skeleton of a large whale beached some years ago on the island and lovingly preserved by local businesses and volunteers. Just outside the front door is a small patio, the main attraction of which is a exceptionally well-sculpted full-size bear which should not be missed. It is easy to cover everything in the center in considerably less than one hour but it is time well spent!

This free wildlife refuge center has lots if great information in a small space. Great for kids and adults. A short film, and many life size reproductions of wildlife. A small gift shop is also available.
