One of the oldest Spanish built Baroque style churches in Pampanga it was half buried by a slurry of volcanic debris from the eruption of Mount Pinatubo. The 12 meter high lahar buried the church in 1995 - several years after the original eruption. Unable to excavate the church fully; the ‘new’ floor and surrounding area means the roof inside is much closer now, and just the top part of many of the original windows now show at ‘floor’ level.

This is one of the churches in Pampanga that were directly affected by Mt. Pinatubo when it erupted in 1991. However, the disaster came four years after when some of the materials spewn by the volcano and deposited on its slope were washed away and carried downslope by rain waters. It's called "lahar" and it came rushing down in 1995 burying half of this beautiful 16th-century church. People fled and abandoned the church for a while. When the situation became safe, they returned and started restoring the church, ŕaising its floor level, building new entrances, etc. and that's what visitors can see today.

Notwithstanding the disaster that hit San Guillermo Church, its original beauty still shines through. One can still imagine how beautiful the church must have been before it was buried by lahar half-deep. Its belfry must have been truly majestic. Its interior must have been lovely, etc. All of this is really worth-visiting. There's also a museum that documents the tragic event and puts on display some items that were saved from the old church.

This 16th Century Church was half buried in Lahar or ashfall carried by floodwaters from the slopes of Mt. Pinatubo during its catastrophic eruption in the nineties. Beautiful interiors with exposed antique roof beams and trusses. They have a small museum. You can walk to the open area at the side of the church to see how deep the lahar was. They also have a restroom with running water! It is a working church that serves the community to this day. There were wedding decorations being installed when we visited. A must see inspiration.

San Guillermo Parish Church is named after San Guillermo, the patron saint of Bacolor, Pampanga, Philippines. The church was originally constructed by the Augustinian Friars in 1576. It’s just so beautiful. Do visit.

You should come and visit this place. I was so surprise when I saw the original picture of the church before the 1991 Mt. Pinatubo lahar. The once so called windows are now the doors of this church. I was so overwhelmed especially when I went inside and could not believe how high the damage of the lahar has done to this church.

A church that became half due to the lahar. The Filipinos are definitely resilient and here is a perfect example. It’s still a church despite being half buried. I always try to visit churches whenever I go somewhere new. This one definitely will never be forgotten.

This is an amazing story of resiliency after disaster! When Mt Pinatubo blew in 1989, the resulting lava flow buried this village except for this church--and even this building up to its second floor! It has been reclaimed and is still in use. The tops of first story windows are partially visible inside the church as a testimony of what lies buried beneath.

The San Guillermo church in Bacolor, Pampanga was built by the Augustinian Friars in 1576, along with the founding of the town of Bacolor, whose patron saint was Saint Guillermo. The church has stood since, even through the 1880 earthquake and the 1990 Mt. Pinatubo eruption, albeit being repaired after the said incidents.

In terms of accessibility, the San Guillermo church is easy to go to due to the wide roads leading to it. Once there, the huge parking space can accommodate around 9 to 10 buses, which is good for field trips. The church's exterior projects strength and age, and its interior boasts a simple but beautifully-decorated assembly hall. There are vendors outside of the church grounds, which offer local products (Bacolor is known for kakanin [rice flour pastries]) that are good to eat.

The only negative thing about the church is that it requires an approval from the head priest to visit it. The church has been undergoing rehabilitation due to some of its sections beginning to show signs of degredation.

Bacolor, as with the rest of Pampanga, is known for its humid weather, so make sure to bring lots of water when you visit San Guillermo church.
