I brought a small group of high school and college students to IMAP when we were staying at the catholic mission in San Lucas. I was so highly impressed! This place is the real deal. We had a solid 2-hour tour all over the property with time to ask questions, shop in their store and meet some local vendors and purchase fruit, textiles and bracelets too. The initiatives here are very intriguing and positive. The grounds are beautiful. The guide went to get a translator for us as he began because we had a mix of Spanish speaking abilities. There's so much to look at and learn. Our group size of about 8 is perhaps the max i’d bring because it would be hard to hear otherwise.
I will definitely be bringing groups back again to participate in some of the various workshops. Everyone was very friendly and the view of the lake was fantastic.
We had good communication to set up the tour through e-mail. $100Q is very good price for this length of tour, but be sure to bring lots of extra cash for merch. Bonus: the dogs around the property are super cute!

Absolutely love visiting IMAP. The folks running the centre are just geniuses of permaculture and the local environment. The lodging is basic but super comfortable. And you truely can't beat the view of the lake. There is so much so learn about permaculture and Lake Atitlán but no doubt this is the place to start!

IMAP is an excellent education center. Easily accessible from Santiago or Cerro de Oro. Book a workshop or just stop by and see what's up.

IMAP is an amazing resource with experience working with foreigners and groups but also really contributes to local and grassroots initiatives. They are open to outsider ideas and techniques around agroecology but are really guided by Maya principles and worldview and local needs. They are a great organization to support and visit while you are in the area. If you are planning a group trip or just stopping by to check out their store, make sure they are on your itinerary!

I was able to get a two day workshop providing a brief introduction to Permaculture and a day trip to Quixaya, an indigenous community.

Its a shame they are not on goabroad.com or other voluntourism sites. IMAP provides such a wealth of information about permaculture and Mayan traditions. Their Seed Bank is a testament to their devotion to the community and retaining their culture.

The directions for getting there are not as complicated as it sounds on their website. There is now a boat that goes from Panajachel to San LucasTolimán. From there take a tuk tuk to IMAP.

We are so glad you enjoyed your visit to IMAP and Quixaya. We hope that the workshop gave you lots of ideas for implementing permaculture principles in your everyday life. Thanks so much for the idea about goabroad.com! We definitely want more people to learn about IMAP's work to promote biodiversity, food sovereignty, and local traditions.

I lead a group of high school students on a service trip to Guatemala City, and had the opportunity to spend a weekend in San Lucas Toliman. I found out about IMAP on trip advisor and decided to take our team there. A volunteer, Reto, agreed to meet with us on Easter Sunday and gave us a 2 hour tour.

The tour began a little shaky, with an awkward PowerPoint presentation, but once Reto began to lead us around the property, things got very interesting. It was a wonderful presentation. Everybody in the group enjoyed the tour and learned quite a bit from it. My wife and I would love to some day come back and split our time between Spanish school and volunteering with IMAP.

This center is in a beautiful setting. If you are lucky to receive a class from one of the more experienced members, that wisdom will remain with you forever. The environment is relaxed and regenerating. As a volunteer, however, expect to work, as it takes hard work to maintain such a diverse and productive ecosystem! As a volunteer, you can eat as much of the organic produce as you want. As I said, there is so much wisdom and depth in permaculture and the way it is practiced and embraced here. It's definitely worth a visit if you can't stay longer!

I have visited the IMAP several times and always find the visit rewarding. This is an excellent place to learn and practice permaculture alongside the Mayan cosmovision.

The IMAP also plays an important role in conserving indigenous and local seeds for use in the communities. Other example of knowledge sharing is the organic garden in Hotel Tolimán which provides a diverse range of crops for use in the hotel restaurant. The first gardener was trained in IMAP and the current team still implements permaculture techniques.

The staff are extremely friendly, enthusiastic and always welcoming. Do go visit!

I had a chance to work with this wonderful Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) for the second time on this trip, this time with a group of college students on study abroad. With IMAP we were able to tour the primary forest, making instant gardens to explain the Mayan cosmology concepts, visit Goyo's food forest, and re-develop a tiered garden space at IMAP. The leaders of the organization, Rony, Goyo, and Myriam, and one of their long-time volunteers, were incredibly knowledgeable about permaculture, sustainable living, seed banking of indigenous seeds, and food sovereignty. This is a place that will make you think about your choices when you return to the US, without imposing guilt or shame, but just with an aire to awareness and allowing people to choose how to live their lives.

This is a must see! "Hands on" activities are coupled with eco-friendly lessons of Mayan permaculture in a garden dreamland overlooking Lake Atitlan! Staff are friendly, engaging, and passionate. IMAP truly takes the idea of reuse/recycle to a new level with bi-level gardens made of discarded tires and old bottles. You will leave feeling more connected to the environment/earth AND you will have some solid skills and techniques to use when you build your gardens back home.
