Interesting bit of history
jan. 2020
Its a rather small cottage, with displays around the walls on the history of the Worlds first savings bank, while the curator is very knowledgeable about the topic and is more than happy to talk about it :)
would definitely recommend a visit if you're in the area

An excellent little museum
aug. 2019
A really interesting museum, highlighting the history of the savings bank movement and the amazing Henry Duncan.
Displays and piggy bank collection are excellent, but brought alive by the enthusiasm and humour of the curator. An hour very well spent.

A little bit of history
mai 2019 • Par
This little museum in an old cottage is owned by the TSB as it is the origin of a savings bank, the first ever. There were two enthusiastic ladies telling us about Henry Duncan who started it all. It’s a bit out of the way but there are brown signs directing to it. Parking is on the street. Recommended

We visited this quirky little museum and were totally enthralled. The lady who gave us a very informative talk on the history was brilliant and very knowledgeable. Would highly recommend.

A Fascinating Insight into Henry Duncan and the Establishment of Savings Banks
feb. 2018 • Alene
I was here years ago and it was good then. A major refurbishment has taken place and an extension with more planned. The curator was very enthusiastic and helpful, providing photocopies in relation to questions about Henry Duncan, the Brow Well, Robert Burns, etc. It is free and supported by the TSB. A lot for young folk and they have leaflets and books for sale. Free parking and I braved the pot hole ridden lanes to get here - well worth the effort.

Very Interesting

We stumbled across this museum on our way elsewhere.

Its well worth a visit, the display's and exhibits are very informative and add that to the very knowledgeable and enthusiastic curator.

If you see the brown signs turn off and spend an hour or so here.

Its free admission so give a donation on your way out.

With an hour to spare
mai 2017 • Par
With an hour to spare this little museum is a real find to visit.
Kay was an interesting curator with lots of knowledge about both the TSB banks, how they started and developed, and about Henry Duncan...the founder of Savings Banks.
We visited the Church to see the Ruthwell Cross and a beeswax copy is held inside the museum. Henry Duncan was an exceptional man who was an inspiration to many who worked the land in the surrounding area and the exhibitions within the museum reflect his very large contribution to improving their way of life.
Listening to his story and life, seeing how involved he was in the community and viewing the artifacts, old coins, drawings, books and not forgetting the little original piggy Banks.....well worth a visit to an extremely good little museum managed by some very pleasant and knowledgeable people

Called in because we saw a local sign. No idea what to expect. Sounded a bit dry. What a surprise! This place is fascinating, with things to look at of interest to all. The history of the savings bank was of great interest - what a great man he was who set it all up. Then there is the information about the cross and a wealth of local history on file too if you are tracing ancestors. Well worth a visit. The curator is so knowledgable as well.

Small but sweet

This is a tiny museum in a cottage in Ruthwell, famous for its magnificent early Christian cross and for being the home of the founder of the first ever savings bank, who was also responsible for saving the cross, and a major player in the foundation of the Free Church. No need to say more, because the museum is looked after by a very enthusiastic curator who will tell you all about it. The collection is somewhat cramped, a hand-full of visitors makes circulation very difficult, if not impossible, but this adds to the charm of the place. If you care to listen and to read the extensive interpretation boards you will learn a lot, unless you are already an expert in the field. It is very pleasing that such places exist, in this case appropriately supported by the TSB.
