A pleasant surprise. I was initially curious, but knew I was in good hands as soon as I arrived. Elephants were treated well and the guides seemed conscious of their treatment, probably because they worked in close co-operation with the also excellent Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai. We went on a walk with the elephants through the forest, but the elephants were not coerced and we did not feel intrusive, since the elephants were free to wander off and do as they wished.
It also felt as though we were giving back to the elephants by helping to feed them.

Quelle horreur pour ces éléphants, entourés de 60 touristes en train de se ruer pour leur donner à manger et se prendre en photo juste à côté d'eux. Une tristesse, une usine à fric, le responsable n'en a rien à faire, aucune explication, rien. Juste là pour vous soutirer de l'argent. Tout tombe à l'abandon. Aucun accueil, rien...
Ce n'est pas du tout ce que j'imaginais des sanctuaires pour éléphants...

Our Mahout Charlie was wonderful- knowledgeable and kind. He even sang a song that mahouts use to calm the elephants. This experience was life changing. The elephants were working on a schedule, but they were well cared for and happy. They were treated with kindness and lead through the day with treats.

A wonderful experience, up close with the elephants, feeding them, walking with them and bathing them! No cruelty here just treating them with love and respect and getting so much back from them. Genuinely one of the best things I have done anywhere.

Nice experience UNTIL I asked if they let the elephant copulate. The guide said of course! Asked what they do with newborns he answered they sell them to trekking camps.... so they use old elephant to create more animals in captivity.... I was disgusted

A long review but hopefully it addresses any worries you may have... This park was recommended to us by a local hotel owner who we know is really involved with animal welfare. We trusted that she would only recommend a sanctuary that really cared for its animals. We then read some old reviews and were shocked by what people had written so we went back and questioned how ethical it really was. It made perfect sense when she told us they had previously put on elephant shows for tourists but a few years ago joined a re-education and conservation programme and changed their place into a real sanctuary. Reviews since have all been good.
We've been to sanctuaries in Malaysia and near Chiang Mai before. I have to say the elephants at this sanctuary were treated better and were happier than either of those! At no point were they harassed or threatened. They stood behind a bamboo fence to be fed but that was for our safety as we valued our feet not being broken by a heavyweight. It was not a pen, nor were they chained or restricted in any way. We prepared rice, bran, banana and tamarind balls for treats, cut up loads of (and I mean loads!) of watermelons and fed them all to the elephants. We also fed leafy plants to them. After feeding, the elephants were free to wander along the jungle path at their own pace and chose to walk with their buddies - they have strong friendships within the group. Three followed the usual path that we took but three chose not to and wandered along the river bank instead. At no point were they forced to change their path. They were free to go where they wanted and on the way they frequently stopped to munch on a favourite plant or tree.
The elephants all met up again at the river's edge further down the path and had a drink together. It was an experience to see that these giant creatures were spooked by the small fish that splashed in the surface. A bit of trumpeting and rumbling started up and eventually they just continued their walk without entering the river. Further down the path, they were again foraging quite happily when one elephant trumpeted and made a big fuss about something in the undergrowth. Her buddy came running over to assist her with whatever danger it was, then a third elephant joined them, all rumbling and trumpeting in alarm. The mahouts went to see what the fuss was all about and found...a chicken had laid an egg! They were spooked by an EGG! The offending egg was removed and peace was restored. So strange that a huge creature is spooked by tiny items and animals.
We went back to camp for a pleasant lunch and then changed for bathing. There are plenty toilet facilities with running water and hand held showers. Toilet paper is provided too. Hand washing facilities are also onsite for hygiene before and after preparing food.
Bathing elephants in the river was a fantastic experience. You could just tell how happy they were. They loved the water and we enjoyed the privilege of being able to scrub them. We washed an elephant who happily turned round for us to do the other side😃 A couple of the mahouts took some great photos and videos for us from the river banks. the elephants were left to spend as long as they wanted in the river and when they got out they covered themselves in fresh dust to protect their sensitive skins, followed by plenty of tree scratching all over. We wandered back to camp, stopping to visit the gravesite of an elephant. She had been 98 years old, had had no teeth for the latter 35+years of her life, relying on bark etc. being peeled for her and special soft food being made up for her. She inevitably died and was buried with a Buddhist monk praying for her. Back at camp, we again fed large baskets of watermelons and pineapple plants to the mini herd.
Each elephant has a different personality and tales told to us about their antics made us laugh. The elephants were happy, not mistreated and have escaped the horrors of their former lives. There is no riding, climbing or sitting on the elephants, no hooks or sticks used, no threats that we could perceive. There was trust and closeness between the Mahouts and the animals. They were shown kindness and were not afraid of humans. The only prompting that we saw was an occasional gentle hand prod to the rear end to let them know we were all following and waiting for them to move along the path!
We were collected by minivan by Patrick our guide - he was lovely and sometimes sleeps with Chopper the elephant at night (she can be very adventurous but I'll let them tell you the tales!). He has also adopted dogs and cats. A kind, animal lover. We also had some good chats with Charlie (who learned English from Harry Potter Films and is a Dobby fan!). The team were all great from Mahouts to shop/camp staff and volunteers. One volunteer is there for her 9th time. She stays for 2 weeks. Nobody would be doing that if there were questions about how ethical this Haven is. I highly recommend you go and enjoy the day. They need to restore tourist numbers to pre-COVID levels to keep going.

I absolutely loved my day at Elephant Haven. We fed the elephants, chopped up watermelons for them to eat, joined them on a walk through the jungle. After lunch, they played in the mud, then we walked down to the river to bathe. Great place to spend the day “volunteering” to ensure these beautiful creatures enjoy the rest of their days.

We had a great time here feeding elephants and watching them having a bath on the river. 100 baht per 1 fruit basket and staff are very friendly. Nice place to spend.

Une belle usine à fric qui surfe la vague du bien être animal.
Les éléphants que nous avons vus le matin évoluent à côté de gravas et de briques de verre et les chaînes ne sont pas très bien cachées...
Le tour d'une demi journée est minuté, chaque activité semble plus être imposée à l'animal (et à notre guide) qu'a son bon vouloir. Le cornac force l'éléphant à aller se baigner et à gicler les visiteurs avec sa trompe.
Plus de 100 personnes sur site en même temps.
Pour le coup, ce ne sont pas les éléphants qui trompent énormément ce coup là...

Während die meisten so genannten Elefanten - Auffangstationen auf Koh Samui Fake sind und ausschließlich als Touristenattraktion dienen, ist diese hier echt.
Für den Eintrittspreis von 2.700 Baht wird man von einem eigenen Fahrer des Elephant Haven im Hotel abgeholt.
Dort angekommen gibt es eine kleine Einweisung inklusive der versicherungsrechtlichen Bestimmungen.
Um einen ersten Kontakt zu den Elefanten aufzubauen füttert man kleine Snacks.
Dann bereitet man unter Anleitung des Guides das Futter für die Tiere zu, bestehen dürfen aus Obst, Pellets, Reis, usw.
Nach der Fütterung betritt man das unheimlich große „Gehege“, was den Namen gar nicht verdient, weil es unfassbar groß ist und den Elefanten sehr viel Platz und Freiraum lässt.
Der Guide erklärt und zeigt viel und man hat immer wieder Kontakt zu den Tieren. Ohne Zäune, ohne Barrikaden, aber mit Respekt und gutem Guide.
Der Guide kennt und erläutert die jeweiligen Schicksale der einzelnen Tiere.
Zum Ende hin gibt es einen kleinen kalten und warmen Mittagssnack in Form eines Buffets , bevor man nach ungefähr 3 Stunden wieder zurückgebracht wird in seine Unterkunft.
Uneingeschränkt zu empfehlen !

Hi, We are trying to chose an Elephant Sanctuary to visit around Sai Yok and am searching for Elephant Haven but several parks keep being listed and I don't know which one is which! Or if they are the same! Elephant park or elephant haven thailand or elephant nature park? Thank you

the one I went to was Elephant Haven Saiyok Kanchanaburi FB page (English version) is Elephant-Haven-Thailand. They do not allow riding and it is a very humane sanctuary. You can see my review on trip advisor-Elephant_Haven-Sai_Yok_Kanchanaburi_

It is good that they are not ridden but a few reviews are sad to read. After visiting the ENP in Chaing Mai where you watch the Ellie’s bathe in the river on there own and are allowed to wander it seems the elephants at EH are still are not being put first. What is your view on the previous two reviews to yours? I am in two minds now to book a day there.

Hi, I love elephants and all animals. I have been travelling annually all over Thailand for over 20 years and seen elephants many times in lots of places, including ENP. I have not been to this particular park. I was in Koh Chang in December 2018 and was horrified to see Chinese and Russian tourists jumping off the fragile backs of 2 baby elephants that were forced to go into the sea EVERY DAY. I was horrified as the tourists were laughing and taking selfies.
Please consider visiting EH as they have made a MAJOR change to a different model (assisted by Lek and Darrick from ENP). Please view (if you haven't already done so) their video on Youtube "Elephant Haven Kanchanaburi Thailand". There will ALWAYS be people who leave bad comments. They are right in what they say that there is a "routine" for the tourists but is absolutely NO WAY anywhere like a circus routine. This change of model will take time to learn and improve if positive feedback is left to help them see that not all tourists "expect to bathe" with the elephants (I don't). They are not using bullhooks which is also a huge change for the mahouts. I hope you have amazing encounter and happy memories.

Oui nous avons dormi sur place et pu bénéficier d'une matinée où il n'y avait personne d'autres.
Attention, il n'y a rien à faire d'autres que regarder les éléphants ...

je vois que certains ont payé 1.500 baths alors que partout je peux lire que le prix est de 2.500 baths...
Cela veut-il dire qu'il y a des prix différents (selon que l'on règle sur place, sur internet...?).
merci de votre réponse car je serai bientôt à BANGKOK et il est prévu que j'y amène mes deux filles (deux "brigitte bardot" en puissance en plus...).

Hi Klaudia, yes it is possible. What we did was we paid online.I cannot include the link to their website (per TA rules) but visit the Elephant Haven website to pay beforehand.
It says you can pay online a 10% deposit of 2,500THB but we paid in FULL online. So you can pay the full amount via PayPal and just shoot them an email to let them know or if you have any further questions.
Also, if you are staying in the Bangkok city area I can highly recommend you a wonderful driver with the best enthusiasm-Tribhop Montien, he goes by Pex. Look him up on Facebook, let him know I referred him to you and he can drive you for the day.
Also, if you plan on buying some souvenirs bring cash as they have some clothing and such onsite. Have fun (I know you will)!

Do you allow us to sit on Top of the Elephants just for few mins while Bathing them alone? Only while bathing them and I don't mean riding on top of them but just for a Photo click which we can sit on top of the Elephant and take few snaps when bathing them alone in the river.

This is not allowed in the park and quite rightly so. The elephants are here to escape that kind of treatment. They are very happy and relaxed with plenty of other photo opportunities.

No. No sitting or riding. This sanctuary allows Elephants to live a life where this does not happen. Many other photo opportunities next to them, holding their trunks etc. This was my experience anyway! Can’t say whether this happened for other visitors.

We are a family of 5 traveling to Thailand in March and wondering if we should do the day experience or the overnight experience at Elephant Haven with our 3 children, ages 6, 8 and 10. We'd like for them to learn as much as possible but also would have to separate into 2 separate rooms if we stay there.
Any thoughts or advice on staying or visiting Elephant Haven with younger kids would be greatly appreciated!
