For close encounters with dangerous animals, this is the place. The safaris were fantastic - lots of lions and excellent expert guiding. It's not busy - for now - so you could enjoy the wildlife in peace, either alone or maybe with one other safari car.

I have been coming to Africa for both work and pleasure for almost 30 years and have visited many parks in Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa. Majete is one of my favourites. This is not a savannah like many parks so no large open grasslands making it easy to spot the animals. So no guarantees. But the setting is quite special and when you do come across the animals it is all the more special. But at least when were were there there were not many tourists around making the animla contact more intimate. No pride of lions suroounded by tourist vehicles.

We have our own SUV. We took guide with us. He told us interesting things about many animals. The round take about 2,5 h. We see giraffes, elephants and many kind of antilopes, wild pigs, alligators and hippos. Wau!

My Dad and I came to Thawale Lodge for 2 nights and had an incredible time!
Even if the temperature were incredibly high, we had a great time! The teams lead by Akke were terrific, always smiley and helpful, food was good and Samuel was wonderful (guide!)
We saw plenty, 3 out of the big 5! And so many antilopes and other animals.
We ended uo being road blocked by a group of 8 Lions one night: incredible experience!
Thank you for starting our amazing trip in Malawi.

Very sad. Waste of time. A YMCA low low end safari virtually no animals except bugs,the accommodations horrible,the food horrible. If you don’t have money for a good safari simply go to a zoo

We stayed at Thawale Lodge for 1 night. Beautiful landscape with good wildlife (many kudu and nyala). The Shire river flows on one side of the park, allowing sightings of hippo, crocs and some good birds. We did not see many other tourists which was nice. Food was good, and the staff were extremely friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The lodge and park are managed by African Parks (look them up, its a great story of innovative conservation) and there is a strong emphasis on local community employment and benefits.

A lovely lodge with the added bonus of a waterhole. We saw many different animals and birds. Unfortunately on our first game drive here we were in a safari vehicle with two other couples, one of whom seemed to have no idea of game drives despite having been on several more in different places. They were hassling the driver continuously to show them lions as if lions were lying around on the roadside everywhere and our guide driver was not doing his job properly. Kenneth kept his cool exceptionally well and the lodge should be proud of him and his skills.
We celebrated our 60th wedding anniversary while we were in the lodge and they laid on a small celebration for us. A table was laid on our verandah lit by candles, decorative candle lights led us to our verandah, there was a bottle of wine ready on the table and Christine was our waitress for the evening. A task she performed very charmingly.
On our last game drive with Kenneth we had a magnificent lion experience.

There was a lot to like about Thawale Camp. Our room was spacious, attractive and had a great verandah for watching the wildlife. We loved the biopool which was in a beautiful location, was great to cool off in and had fish nibbling you if you stayed still. The restaurant had a wonderful location overlooking the waterhole, which was frequently visited by wildlife. The food was generally good, especially the bowl of fruit, yogurt and granola at breakfast. Although we were disappointed to find that, as in every place we stayed, having travelled all the way from the UK, we were offered a full English breakfast.
The game drives with our guide, Kenneth, were good and sometimes very good, but we were disappointed that it was not possible to do a game walk. We understand why boat safaris were not possible because of the recent cyclone. Kenneth was very knowledgeable, friendly and entertaining.
We would really have liked more written information in our room about the basics, for example meal times, where it was safe to walk and the location of the biopool. A price list at the bar would have been useful too, so that we knew what was available. The free laundry service was very useful.

Really lovely and cosy lodge at Thawale with great service and comfy tents. Nothing like waking up to an elephant grazing outside your tent! Saw Wild Dogs amongst other wildlife. The food and drink was great too.

The Majete Reserve was outstanding!!!! I would highly recommend staying here to enjoy all of the activities.

Could someone help me with their prices. How much is it for a ride around the reserve?

If you want to do a game drive with the a guide on their parks vehicle it is USD 25.00 per person. If you want to enter the park and drive around the park in your own car then their are several prices, a price for Malawians, residents and an overseas visitor. As Ia resident I pay approx MK 17 000.00 which is the cost for my wife and myself and our car.

Hello :) I wondered if anyone can offer some advice on how to plan a trip to Majete from Blantyre? (where to find a driver, how much it transport to/from costs etc). And also what the wildlife spotting will be like in January/February? Thank you!

I was picked Jp bay the tour operator. I think you also could rent a car and drive yourself or arrange a transfer. Sorry no idea hoe much that would cost. It will be hot and humid in that period. I was there in April and we spotted quite a lot of animals.

We are visiting the Reserve in mid-September....Looking for advice on which of the activities to select. Morning game drive or afternoon game drive (best chance to see the most animals?); boat trip; or bush walk? (What is the primary focus of the bush walk - largely birding or??) Thanks in advance!

We were booked on all for activities and gt to see animals all the time as it was my first safari I thoroughly enjoyed the morning bush walk n gt to see zebras and elephants quite close up and many other interesting insects n birds.also heard lions roaring 7 kms away but unfortunately or maybe fortunately we didn't encounter them.we went in April and got to see many animals I'm nt sure about September? Hope this is helpful

we are two male travelling hopefully to Zambia and Malawi this coming January .
i have been to Kenya and south Africa were i have been on a safari some time ago . Was told that your area is the best for safari . Want something unusual maybe unique too .
Ideal safari , relaxing time too .
