The grand hall takes your breath away with its opulence, thereafter all a bit downhill really. Good guide who knows his stuff albeit majoring on the filming of Atonement several years ago.
Owner chipped in and was vaule for money ( Evidently they need it! )
Tea was OK ,nothing special.

Worthy of support as otherwise the future looks bleak for properties of this size which are privately owned.

This house, which is a private residence with occasional tours, is an absolutely stunning house. The workmanship and detail in the great hall, and elsewhere, are really first class. Our guide was very informative and also helpful when we found "gems" he hadn't previously noticed. Keeping such a house going privately must be a real labour of love and, as you are told, if it had not been selected for the set of the film Atonement it would not currently be in such good condition. We would have liked to have learnt a little bit more about the technology - this was one of the first houses in England to have electricity and underfloor heating - but perhaps that is just our own penchant.

Lovely house but massive shame about our guide, he spoke far to quickly with a good ammount of mumbling and tried to cram way to much information in, in the short time we had to look at the rooms. Each room we visited it would have been nice to look round all the diffrent items in it instead of being crammed in to listen to the guide go on and on about, well i cant really tell you what about as i had totally switched off. Most of the tour and rooms are aimed arround atonement so if you are not a fan of the film then it wont mean much to you. At the end you got a cup of tea which was fine with half a cheap fruit less scone and a small slice of average cake the £16 that we were charged for the whole thing is a total rip off. I think if we had had a good guide it may not have been quite as painfull and i may have been able to retain at least some info on this house

Hi Kate We are very sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your tour on Tuesday as we normally pride ourselves on the good feedback we receive. We will look into this as it is so inconsistent with how we would like our visitors to feel about their visit. I hope perhaps you managed to enjoy the gardens and grounds during your visit. With kind regards

The house was amazing and gardens fantastic
But the tour guide needs to brush up on the history of the house and would of been good to see other bits of house not just the atonement rooms

My wife and I have been HHA members for three years (rejoined this year £80.00 visited 25 properties last year with free entry) and decided to pay our £16.50 pp to tour Stokesay Court (inc tea and cakes) as my wife had been wanting to visit last year but we missed the last booking.
We visited on April 22nd and we found the property was informative and interesting due to the first short film and then then Nigel (I think) who conducted our approx 90 mins tour. I will save informing you all the information as it is much better to look at their WEB site which is very good. Well worth the visit.

It's lovely to hear how much you enjoyed your visit to Stokesay Court and your tour. It does have quite a fascinating history.

I've wanted to visit here for quite some time but kept missing the open tour periods. Just so happened I spotted the tours for bank holiday weekend. I messaged to see if there was any space on a tour the next day and to my surprise that morning Caroline (property owner) called me and left a message accommodating us for the tour! The tour was fantastic and at the end included afternoon tea - the cake was delicious! Once finished inside we were free to enjoy the gardens which were lovely!
We had a great afternoon here in the sunshine! Would highly recommend!
Thank you Caroline for booking us in at such short notice!

We pre-booked as you cannot just turn up for this place as it is a private home. You will be escorted around the property by the owner. We thoroughly enjoyed this tour and listening to the owner and how she came to own the property. A lot of the rooms are as they were when the film 'Atonement'was filmed there a few years ago. We were advised by the owner that it is like being on a film set and I would advise that you see the film before visiting. Not only is this a tour into the building itself and how it came in to being , but it is also a glimpse of how film makers work. The tour is personal and that really makes a difference as this is a living breathing home. It is finished off with tea and scones, lovely.

Thanks for your review. We're glad to hear you enjoyed it so much and hope you may return some day. We are undertaking ongoing restoration work in the grounds, so don't forget that you can enjoy these too after your tour!.

A very "personal" tour , you really felt that you could live here! An insight into the machinations of the film world - the house was used in Atonement and the history of a house built at the end of the 1800 that went through two World Wars and has to adapt to modern day. Take in the gardens for a longer visit. Bookings only so look online.
Great cake too!

As a fan of the film Atonement I had admired the house and gardens but had no idea it was so close to where I now live. It was a privilege to be shown around the house, which is still a family home, and the film was brought to life by the excellent, very informative tour guide. But it's not all about the film - the house itself and the surrounding countryside are simply stunning and there are views across the beautiful Shropshire Hills for everyone to enjoy. And then of course there is the lovely tea and cake at the end of the tour, a rare treat all round!

Stokesay Court (not to be confused with Stokesay Castle about 4 miles away) is a privately owned manor house. Built by John Derby Allcroft (a wealthy retired glove manufacturer) who had to wait 18 years to secure the site of his house. He'd bought a couple of local estates (including the one incorporating Stokesay Castle) but his ideal site was denied him. He waited for the owner to die, and then built his dream house - the absolutely wonderful views from the back of the house explains his patience!
You are taken round the house on a guided tour, as it is still lived in by a descendent of the builder who is always on hand at the end of the tour to provide answers to questions, but it is small groups and the tour is very personalised. In fact the tour moves at a pace determined by the group - someone wanted to see the servants' bells ringing so we waited while a staff member went and pulled the bell in the dining room.
The outside of the house is Jacobean style, but the inside is very Arts and Crafts with magnificent English Oak panelling. This house had central heating installed upon building in 1892, and also electric lighting as standard. Very advanced for its time.
There is a history section where documents from the archives are on display - during the first world war it was a soldiers' hospital, it trained officers in the second world war but throughout it was a family home.
Stokesay Court was the setting for the film Atonement, starring Kiera Knightly, and the tour explains how rooms are furnished for film production - some still have the film panelling in place with squares cut to allow access to the light switch! - and how part was digitally erased.
There are extensive grounds with large ponds and a grotto worth exploring, but it's worth mentioning again it is a private house and you need to be booked on a tour to enter the grounds
