The path is used by cyclists and walkers and no wonder.. it's so gifted with beautiful views.. take a torch for the tunnel.. we went in June so it wasn't too slippery.. happiness for those who like the unusual sites about... we parked at the station car park, not many spaces but it wasn't full.. and it was a short walk to see the sites... great!

Parking is available at Draughting Cross about 1.5 miles away near Maidwell village or Arthingworth which is about 800 metres away, the former being slightly larger.
The walk took us about 25 minutes passing under the A14 and to the Kelmarsh tunnel which was extremely dark, damp and quite bumpy.
At about 500 metres in length the tunnel is one of two on the Brampton Valley walk and cyclists are encouraged to dismount when approaching the tunnel.
A lovely walk to and from the tunnel but very dark once inside.

Usually cycle this flat, traffic free route but chose to walk it today due to the icy conditions. Beautiful array of icicles in and around both Kelmarsh and Oxenden tunnels. Well worth a visit. Particularly good for families with dogs or young children.

We did a walk through the tunnel as part of our Halloween activities and it turned out to be great fun, very spooky and a ghostly atmosphere in the dark added to our enjoyment. A torch is essential as is good navigating skills to find the car park...don't rely on your sat nav as you could end up in the middle of nowhere !!!

We used postcode LE16 8JU and parked at the brampton valley car park which is free. Easy to find car park. At the car park there is a path straight ahead and some steps to the left. The steps are steep. Go up the steps and straight in front of you is a directional sign. We took the left towards kelmarsh tunnels 1/2 a mile. It is a clear and straight path. Several bench and opportunities to pick black berries along the way. It is very exciting as the darkness of the tunnel comes into view. At the tunnel entrance there is a path to the left. I'd advice young climbers use this to explore the view from the top of the tunnel. On the other side of the tunnel my 7 year old son explored the top and it is steep and slippery. He did however find the parallel tunnel entrance. You will need a torch to walk through the 480m of dark tunnel. It is incredibly dark and disorienting without a torch. The floor is firm concrete however there are potholes with puddles at points or bits of stock debris, watch your step. The mid point has a fantastic air vent hole. We took apx 45 mins to walk and explore and return to the car.

I visited here on my own with my three sons.

The SatNav went a bit wonky but we got to the car park. A bit of two-and Fro-Ing getting the boys and the pushchair up some steep steps on leaving the car park, but we managed it. (Apparently there is a path leading away from the car park that you can bypass the steps, but we decided to go up!)

From the car park, there are two tunnels.

To the left, about half a mile away, is Kelmarsh Tunnel, which is the one we visited.

To the right is Oxendon tunnel, which is 1.5 miles walk.

The two tunnels are joined by a long, disused railway which is now a path / bicycle route. Fairly level and easy with a little pushchair but a bit bumpy.

Approaching the tunnel, their size really is surprising! The entrance was very imposing and my middle (9 years) old son was scared to go in at first!

It really is pitch black in there. Make sure you take head torches - we saw one family with glow sticks and bracelets, cool!

Half way along is an air vent which made an excellent photo opportunity.

The tunnel was cold and damp but felt safe (although I did spot a disused firework!)

We bimbled along and it took just under an hour to walk from the car park to the other side of the tunnel and back.

Some beautiful views across the countryside along the way, too. A couple of picnic benches along the way.

Really unusual, interesting place to visit!

A quirky idea to walk through the abandoned railway tunnel on the Brampton Way Valley. On a hot day, a great place to escape the sun, but if you only have your prescription sunglasses it's becomes very dark. 480m long, park up on Arthingworth Rd, at the railway bridge.

I visited Kelmarsh tunnels expecting them to be heaving but was pleasantly surprised with how quiet the area was which meant it was very easy to social distance and the kids could be as noisy as they liked in the tunnels. The car park is small with only one disabled parking spot, and there are picnic benches tucked in the shade. We drove from one tunnel to the next as our os map was showing an 8 mile round trip otherwise! The tunnels themselves were lovely and cool but recommend taking touches. There are more than two tunnels but not all of them are open.

Part of the Brampton Way cycle track, that used to be an old railway line. Used to walk this area a lot when lived local, so today thought I would go back and take a trip down memory lane.
The tunnel itself is very creepy and I'm sure younger kids would love it. The air vent half way along provides a great photo opportunity.
Was very leaky in places today, due to all the heavy rain the area has had, this only added to the creepy value.
