This was a planned excursion from our river cruise. It's located in a beautiful section of Paris, but from the windows of the bus, it looked like parking was definitely at a premium. The house is beautifully furnished and had some incredibly unique pieces that were amazing to see up close. At one point in the tour I wasn't feeling well, so I left the tour and went and sat in the gardens. The gardens are beautiful and were well worth taking the time to go through. Around the back of the building, you can also go see their black swans, which was very cool.

Lovely home of Napoleon's first wife. Striking spaces on the ground floor. Less suggestive are the spaces on the first floor, but full of memorabilia of Napoleon and his wife. Pretty gardens. Definitely worth a visit

Beautiful visit very interesting
Furnished rooms
Tableware etc...
I enjoyed the end of the visit on Saint Helena
On the other hand it is still curious that we can not provide a dressing room
Signage is also missing to get to the entrance

After Versailles and domain Trianon, Chateau Malmaison felt like a respite. It was much smaller than Versailles and far less touristy. However, around a couple hundred important imperial councils or treaties were held there; and in a natural way, the gardens were cultivated as a sort of agricultural research centre. The audio guide actually worked and the tour was brief, but a small museum in the apartment area above helped fill in the gaps. An exterior washroom was located between the free parking lot and the main reception. The prices are more reasonable (especially for Paris Museum Pass holders), and we didn’t need to prebook our visit. Even the staff in the gift shop were helpful in answering questions. Bring water or a packed lunch, and enjoy the grounds—just 7 km North of Versailles!

I was not too impressed by the exterior because it is not that huge building, but I thought it was great inside. But be prepared to go many stairs, especially when one gets up in the attic which has a very interesting exhibition of Napoleon's items from his last years on St.Helena island.

Malmaison ("Bad House") - is a wonderful castle-museum and the former private residence of Napoleon Bonaparte and his wife Josephine de Beauharnais, built at 17th century, a "country house" not too far from Paris.
The fastest (and not the most economical) way to get there is - metro line 1 go to La Defence stop. After exit the station we ordered Uber and on the way back we did the same. If you want to rent an audio guide (very handy in different languages) have your ID which you will leave as a guarantee. Sight open daily (except Tuesday) from 10 am - 5 pm, cost 6.50 euros.
This day trip left many unforgettable impressions - the house seems to be still inhabited, the spirit of the love story of two great people in history still reigns there.
This mini-castle has 3 floors and a beautiful garden, a rose garden, a ponds with lovely statues, black swans, bridges over a river, a forest, a huge lawn. Malmaison - first floor - has a reception hall, library, dining room, music salon etc. Second floor - Josephine's bedroom, her toilette room, Empire's bedroom, armory hall etc. And on the 3rd floor there is a very interesting exhibition about the last months of Napoleon’s life, spent on the island of St. Helena with unique exhibits - a lock of the Emperor’s hair, the shirt in which he died, his toiletries and accessories, chess, a camp bed, his death mask and much more. These relics make a strong impression, especially since they are all original.
The entire museum is permeated with great history, love, and memory for these two people. If you are interested in the era and life of Napoleon Bonaparte and Josephine, this place is a must visit. We specifically set aside a whole day to leisurely explore everything (the house and the vast area around it) in order to comprehend and enjoy everything. There is a small gift shop near the ticket office. There is no cafe here, you can take provisions with you and have a picnic in Josephine’s own garden!!

I am currently in Paris. Is the rose garden in bloom?
Skrevet 12. september 2019
I don't know about the rose garden but it's a wonderful place to visit.

Will be in Paris in a couple weeks and do want to visit the Chateau. Is there anything else in the immediate area, walking distance, or is it a single destination
Skrevet 5. februar 2019
How many hours should we allow to fully enjoy the Chateau and the garden without rushing?
Skrevet 29. november 2018
If you go in season, when the flowers are in bloom, 4 hours would be good. The Chateau can be seen in an hour and the grounds in another hour but if you really want to stop and enjoy the flowers allow a little more.
Skrevet 29. november 2018
Do they have a cafe where we could have something to eat? Thanks.
Skrevet 28. desember 2017
As I recall there is no cafe - the Chateau is too small to warrant a cafe on the premises. If you look at a map of the area, about a mile away is the town center for Ruell-Malmaison and there seems to be a number of restaurants there. Enjoy your visit there!

We’re going to Paris in January. Would this be worth our time or should we go another time when it’s warmer? Thanks.
Skrevet 27. desember 2017
I visited on a cold rainy day in December , It was easy and pleasant to get around the house as there were few other people there . Good if you like to study the house contents in detail . But much too cold and wet to enjoy the vast gardens .

Bom passeio!

Can you tell me how to get to Chateau de Malmaison from Vernon using public transportation? Thanks!
Skrevet 18. februar 2016
I can go to either Versailles or Chateau de Malmaison. I think I would prefer Chateau de Malmaison, am I wrong to make that choice?
Skrevet 17. februar 2016
Two vastly different places - Versailles opulent, grand, crowded, queues pushing you through at a rapid pace - spectacular grounds and gardens.
Malmaison, quiet, serene, can do at your own pace, very ambient, simple but gorgeous gardens, wonderful antiques, furniture and appointments. Feels like Josephine is still there.
Both places are a must when visiting Paris, but I have fallen in love with Malmaison.

We are planning to visit Flore Submarine base mid-May 2016. Will there be English speaking tours at that time? If not, is there a self-guided audio tour in English? When should we buy tickets?
Skrevet 20. juli 2015
when you pay your entry fee you can collect a audio device that gives you the tour of the house in the tour order, very useful, hope you enjoy it, it is a great house and really does open your eyes to how the Emperor and his wife lived.
If you have time check out my reviews of restaurants in the Reue de Malmaison worth looking at.
